Description

Feb- 3 i P." R. WENDELL METAL PACKING Filed Feb. 15, 1921,
INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 3, 1925-,
UNITED STATES PAUL R. WENDELL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,
METAL PACKING.
Application filed. February 13, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL R. ENDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chica o, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Metal Packing, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to metal packing for use in stuffing boxes and various types of machinery, and an object of the invention is to provide a yieldable, noncompressible metal packing which will yield, under compression, to securely pack or seal a joint, but which will not become hardened or compressed under successive applications of power or pressure there against.
Another object of this invention is to provide a yieldable, noncompressible packing which will readily lend itself to shaping for providing the most practical and desired shape of packing depending upon the use to which it is to be put.
A further object of this invention is to provide a metal packing which will require only a simple process in the forming and shaping thereof.
Another object of this invention is to provide a metal packing which is formed of sheets of pliable metal having one surface covered or coated with a liquid after which the pliable sheets of metal are crimped or crushed to provide irregular shapes to the metal in cross section and also provide pockets of irregular shape within the body of the packing formed by the crushing of the sheet metal to prevent compressing of the packing.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description and in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one form or shape of the packing.
Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of a sheet of pliable metal showing it coated with liquid prior to the crushing of the metal and illustrating the first step in the process or method of forming the packing.
Fig. 3 is an edege elevation of the pliable sheet metal partially crushed into packing shape and illustrating the second step in the method of forming the metal packing.
Serial No. 444,455,
Fig. 4c is a section through a modified form of the packing.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, it is to be understood that while the piece of the metal packing shown in Fig. l of the drawing is rectangular in shape, that the improved packing may be made in any shape, such as cylindrical, polygonal in cross section, or any shape desired, depending upon the place it is to be used and the work to be performed by it.
In forming the metal packing a sheet 1 of pliable metal, such as sheet Babbitt metal or the like, is first coated with a liquid such as cylinder or lubricating oil as shown at 2 in Fig. 2 of the drawing, after which the sheet of pliable metal is bunched or crushed, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing to provide irregular shapes to the sheet and to provide a regular outer surface to the composite piece of packing formed by the crush ing of the sheet, the outer shape depending upon the use to which the packing is to be put. The crushing of the sheet of pliable metal from two opposite edges will provide, besides irregularities in the shape of the metal, irregular pockets within the formed packing in which the liquid 2 will be con-- fined providing a yieldable, noncompressi ble packing. Any suitable type of liquid may be employed without departing from the spirit of this invention. If it is so desired the formed piece of packing may be encased in a suitable shell as illustrated at 3 formed of asheet of pliable metal, PI'GfQlE ably of the same type as the sheet 1.
The formation of the irregularly shaped pockets in the packing, which pockets will have their ends closed and will not extend throughout the entire length of the packing will prevent the liquid from oozing out of the ends of the packing, however, in forming a continuous piece of packing it may be desirable to provide pockets therein which are comparatively regular and extend throughout the length of the continuous piece of packing and such a modified form is illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not ets, a lubricant in said pockets and an outer desire to be limited in any manner except as casing of pliable sheet metal of the same 10 set forth in the claim hereunto appended. type as the core and folded about the Having thus described my invention what crushed pliable sheet metal core to entirely 5 I claim is: enclose the same.
A metal packing comprising acore In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
