Description

`NOV. 25,1930. 1 G, DlC-KsO-N 1,782,870
GASKET Filed Sept. 10, 1928- vPatented Nov. 25, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GASKET Application led September 10, 1928. Serial No. 305,077.
This invention relates more especially to that type of gland packings or gaskets employed in providing tight joints between the parts of spark plugs, cylinders, etc. of high compression internal combustion engines, in which such packings or gaskets are exposed both to excessive high temperatures and pressures, and the present improvement has for its object to provide a structural formation and combination of parts in a packing gasket of the type above referred to, by means of which a durable and very effective joint between the ordinarily irregular and somewhat rough periphery of the porcelain core and associated enclosing shell of the spark plug is attained, and with which a structure is provided which is adapted to effectively withstand the combined high pressures and temperatures to which the packing gasket is exposed in the actual operation of high` compression internal combustion engines, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a plan view, with parts broken away and in section, of a spark plug gasket, embodying the preferred form of the invenof internal combustion engines, a thin annular shell 1 of copper or like ductile metal, holds the inner filling or packing 2 in proper position.
In the present improvement the enclosing shell 1 may be of different detail formations,
preferably of the open peripheral formation" illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, by which if so desired may be of the closed formation shown in Fig. 5, in which the four walls of the annular cavity of'the shell l are integrallv connected together, to constitute a closed The material feature of this improvement, in connection with the holding shell 1 above described, consists in afilling or packing for said shell formed of a plurality of thin and pliable annular sheets or lamin 2 of copper or like ductile metal adapted to resist fus1on` under the high temperatures to which the gasket as a whole is exposed in its use in connection with the spark plugs and other parts of high compression internal combustion engines, while the arrangement and described tenuity of the sheets of lamin adapts the gasket to yield in any portion to fit and closely contact with any surface irregularities that may exist in the surfaces of the joint to be packed, and so that the gasket will adjust itself readily to such irregularand uneven surfaces and when heated will expand to attain an eective joint against pressure. The number of thin sheets or laminae comprising the filling or packing may be of any desired number as particular uses may indicate.
From extended practical tests of the pres ent construction the same has proven to effect a perfect and substantial joint or contact with the irregular and somewhat rough perimeter of the central porcelain core of a spark plug, and at the same time maintain a proper packing or sealing function under the high temperatures and pressures to which it is exposed when used. in spark plugs or hlgh compression internal combustion englnes:
