SHOE

Application filed. November To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES MELVILLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carbondale, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Shoe Last, of which the following is a specification;

This invention relates to boots and shoes, and more particularly to shoe lasts.

The object of the invention is to provide a single all around shoe repairing last which may be used for all purposes, thereby economizing in space for storing the lasts and in the time of the operator required for changing the last.

Another object is to provide a shoe repairing last so constructed that a new sole may be applied without crushing the cap of the shoe and which may also be used to hold the shoe and toecap in position while applying a new toecap.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of a shoe cap last constructed in accordance with this invention, and

In the embodiment illustrated, a base plate 1 is shown apertured at 2 for connection with a bench or other support and which has an angular socket 3 to receive a correspondingly shaped terminal 5 of a last shank 4, said terminal and socket preferably tapering to cause a wedging engage- .ment between them and thereby securely retain the last engaged with the base plate.

tion with which the lastis to be used, it being understood that these lasts are to be made in various sizes ranging from baby shoe sizes to womens and mens.

The shank 4 of the last may be strengthened by reinforcing ribs G if desired, but obviously it may be otherwise constructed.

A last constructed as herein shown and described may be used to repair the heel of the shoe to put on a new sole, and to recap the shoe in one operation using the same last, or if the shoe that is to be repaired requires a sole and heel. only, the raised solid cap portion 13 on the toe of the last will retain the toecap of the shoe in place and in shape while the shoe being repaired on the last preventing crushing of the cap, and it can also be used for recapping the shoe at the same time if desired.

Experience has demonstrated that a multiple purpose last of the character herein shown and described, fills a long felt want in the shoe repair business, it having heretofore being found necessary to employ one purpose lasts which require much valuable space to store them in as well as a great waste of time in changing the lasts for performing the various repair operations.

In the use of this improved last, the angular end being disposed in the socket 8 of the base plate 1 the foot portion 10 of the last will be positioned for use. It is of course understood that the last may be used by reversing it if desired. which may be necessary in recapping a shoe.

I claim 2- A combined soling. heeling and capping last comprising a full fashioned foot portion having a heel. and toe smooth and unbroken throughout its tread surface, and provided on its upper face at its toe with a solid portion to fit within the cap of a shoe and hold it against collapse, and a shank for mounting the last in a support.
