Description
jan, 20, 1925A P. C. T. CHEN COMBINATLON PENCIL AND FOUNTAIN PEN Filed April 2l, 1925 INVENTOR.
ATORNEYS.
WTNESSES Patented Jan. 20. 1925.
UNITED STATES PHILANDER C. T. CHEN. OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINATION PENCIL AND FOUNTAIN PEN.
Application led April 21, 1923.
To all whom it may con cer/n Be it known that Plmrwnnn C. i'l. CHEN, al citizen of the United States. residing at Chicago. in the county of Cook and State of lllinois. has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Pencils and Fountain lens. of which the following is a specification. t
ln carrying out the present invention 1t is my purpose to provide a combined article that may be advantageously employed. as either a. fountain pen or pencil, the article being equipped with a cap for ready dlsposition upon opposite ends thereof for enclosing either the pen or pencil when the oppos1te clement is being used.
further purpose of the invention is the provision of such a combined. article wherein the pencil element per se 1s of the eversharp type, a highly improved means being provided for feeding the lead outwardly of its maintaining barrel whenever desirable.
.k still further purpose of the invention resides in the provision of such an article that is comparatively simple in construction and one that may be manufactured and marketed at. relatively small cost.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure l-is a side elevation of my combined article,
Figure 2-is a section thereof,
Figure 3-is an enlarged side elevation of the pencil element removed from the main barrel,
Figure 4-is a detail cross section taken detail longitudinal cross substantially on the line 3 3 of Figure 4,
and
Figure 5is a longitudinal cross section upon the line of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 indi- Cates a relatively elongated hollow barrel provided internally and adjacent one end with a partition 6 for dividing said barrel into chambers 7 and 8 at opposite ends Serial No. 633.585.
Each of the said receptacles 13 is provided with a raised cross threaded portion 20 ad- `jacent its headed end, adapted for inter-engagement with the screw threads at the front end of said chamber, whereby a turning movement of the head 14 of the pencil element in one direction will occasion the engagement of said pencil element within the chamber. A continued turning movement of said head will bring the threaded raised portions 20 into the channel 11 for consequently allowing a rotation of the pencil element with respect to the barrel 5 in either direc# tion without affecting the rela-tion ofthe pencil element to the interior of said chamber 8.
threads of the raised portions 20 with theI threads of the chamber, for withdrawing the pencil element therefrom.
The barrel 5 is formed externally with screw threads 21 adjacentone end, and with screw threads 22 at itsy opposite ends for receiving internal screw threads of a closure cap 23. The closed end of this cap 25? 1s provided with a screw threaded opening for receiving either end of an externally screw threaded sleeve 24 formed centrallypwith a ilange25 adapted to bring` up against the end of said cap. The sleeve 24 carries a rnbber eraser 26 either end of which may be employed by merely reversing;r the sleeve within the cap 23, it beingr well to note that oneV end of this eraser 26 is an ink eraser and the opposite end is a pencil eraser.
In view of the above description it is believed by me that the operation and advantages of'an article of this character vill be readily appreciated by those skilled 1n the art and although I liaveherein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the Apresent. invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minorichanges may be made therein, withoutdeparting from the spirit and srope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what f adapted to eng-age the threaded chamber, and a lead iarried by the cross head and passing through the plug.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my si nlature,
PHILANDER e. T. c
