FOUNTAIN PEN.
Application led June 19, 1924. Serial No. 721,058.
To all 'whom t may comem:
Be it known that I, FRANK fl. GRoMMEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois,'have invented new and useful Impi'ovements in Fountain Pens, of which the following is a specification'.
This invention relates to fountain pens and more particularly to the filling means therefore.
An important object of this invention is to provide a fountain pen of the plunger type having simple means whereby the plunger maybe drawn rearwardly for filling the body or chamber of the pen.
A further object is to provide a fountain pen wherein the parts are held in a compact position during the use of the pen.
A further object is to provide a fountain pen of the character specified which is of highly simplified construction, durable/in use and is cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course the following description. Y p y In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this'application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
'Figure 1 is a perspective of the improved fountain pen;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View i through the same, the plunger being in its rearmost position or in that position which it occupies after the filling of the pen;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View through the fountain pen with the plunger' in its advanced position "to draw a quantity 'of ink into the pen;
` Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 4--4 of Fig. 2.
In thedrawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the'numeral 5 designates the body or cylinder, of a fountain pen, thesaid cylinder being provided at its forward end with a head 6 to wh h a nib 7 is `connected in any suitable manner. A closure member 8 may be applied to the forward portion of the fountain Vpen to extend over the nib and if founddesirable may be provided with a clip 9 by means of. which the pen may be attached to ones vpocket The cylinder 5 is provided with a chamber 10 within which a piston 1l is mounted' and it is believed to be obvious that when the piston 11 is drawn rearwardly and the forward portion of the pen is submerged in abottle of ink a quantity of inkl will be drawn into the chamber in advance of the piston. Particular attention is. directed to the fact that the piston is provided with a packing 12 of suitable material and which allows the piston to move longitudinally when manually operated but yhas sufficient frictional contact with the wall of the chamber to prevent the same from rotating. Fig. 2 illustrates that the piston 11 has a bore 14 threaded for its entire length for engagement by the slightly'enlarged threaded f0r- Ward end 15 of a piston rod 16.
'The piston rod 16 is securely connected, by screw threads or-otherwise with a cap 18 having its forward portion provided with an annular flange 19 adapted for threaded engagement with the reduced rear end 20 of the cylinder 5. Figs. 2 and 3 plainly illustrate that a gasket or washer 22 is positioned within they flange 19 and is adapted to bear against-the reduced rear end 2O so as to prevent ink fromescaping from the rear end ofthe cylinder.
In use when it is desired to till the pen the rod 16 is threaded into the iston 11 and the piston lis then advanced. T ie nib-of the pen is now submerged in the ink and it is drawn rearwardly so a quantity of ink is drawn into the chamber 10. The rod 16 is now turned so that it is extended entirely through the piston 11. As previously stated the piston 11 will not turn when the rod 16 is turned as thefrictional contact between e 'lustrated in 2 so that the pen will occupy but a small amount of space during the use of the same. It will be Iseen that when the parts are positioned as illustrated in Fig. 2 the ca 18 threaded on to the'rear end o the cylinder 15 and the gasket 2 2 will positively prevent the leakage of ink.
Havin thus described the invention, what is c aimed is:
A fountain en comprising a cylinder, havin a cham er, the rear portion of the cylin er ybeing providedlyvith a reduced threaded portion, a piston arranged in said o linden and having a bore opening out tirouh opposite ends of the -piston and threa ed for its entirelength, a rod having an enlarged forward portion threaded in the bore of said piston and adapted to extend entirely through the piston and moved into the forward portion of the cylinder, a-
cap securely connected to said rod and adapted'to be threaded on. the rear terminal 10 portion of said cylinder, said piston being rovided with a sealing medium {fictionaly contacting with the wall of the cylinder and holding the piston against turning and a packing carried by said cap and surrounding the rear portion of said rod whereby leakage from said chamber is positively prevente l In testimony whereof I ax my signature.'
