Be it known that I, JOHN BERNARD HAG- man, a citizen of the United States, residing. .at lVappingers Falls, county of Dutchess,-State of New York, have invented a new and useful Folding-Machine. Attachment,.of which the following is a specification.-
My invention relates-to an attachment for machinesused for the purpose of folding cloth or fabrics,- such as cotton fabrics. Someof the-objects. of my invention are to providemeans .whereby cloth folding machinesmay be used for folding doubled cloth to provide means for passing the doubled clothfrom a source. of supply, such as a roll orpile to the folding mechanism in such manner as to prevent creasing of the cloth; and also to provide means whereby this is, done so efficiently that the amount of cloth folded in a given time may be considerably greater than has been possible by means of prior arrangements.
A further object of my invention is to provide folding means for doubled cloth, which shall obviate thewiring now required.
The preferred form of'apparatus according to my invention is illustrated in the drawing,.iin which Figu're'l is an end elevation of such apparatus, part of-the cloth being torn away and other parts being broken away for the sake of clarity;

Figure 3 is a cross-section of the guide member .13, on the line a-a of Figure 2.

The pull on the cloth exerted by the hooker blade of the folding mechanism is intermittent and jerky; therefore, means must be provided to insure the cloths being delivered to the hooker blade free from creases. Such means, in the preferred form shown, consist of the platform 7, Which. operates to smooth out the cloth as it is pulled out of the pan 5, this operation be ing assisted by the weight of the cloth. hanging from the edge of the pan; further, the idle roll 11 and the cooperating Weight 12, by virtue of pressure on the cloth as it passes over the roll, hold the same under sufficient tension to prevent the cloths becoming slack or over-running itself; lastly, any inequalities at the fold side of the cloth are evened out by. means of the beveled edge 15 of the guide member 13.
I recognize that various modifications in detail and in arrangement of parts of my apparatus may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of my invention, and I therefore desire protection for all such modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
It will be evident also that according to my invention all necessity for wiring is done away with.
Having described the preferred form of my invention what I claim is:
1. In a machine for folding doubled cloth, the combination of a hooker arm, a guide member above said arm arranged to normally contact with the inner surface of the crease in the cloth being folded, means for guiding the doubled cloth to said memher on its way to said hooker arm, and means for maintaining tension on the cloth being folded.
2; In a machine for folding doubled cloth, the combination of a hooker arm, a guide member above said arm designed to contact with the inner surface of the cloth being folded, said guide member being beveled pbeing folded.
and having its thin edge against the cloth means for guiding the double cloth to said member on its way to said hooker arm and means for maintaining tension on the cloth being folded.
3." In a machine for folding doubled cloth, the combination of a hooker arm, a guide member above said arm contacting with the inner surface of the cloth being folded, said member being beveled and having its thin edge against the cloth, said member also being beveled at the ends pointing in the direction of the travel of the cloth, means for guiding the doubled cloth to said memher on its wayto said hooker arm, and
means for maintaining tension on the cloth 4. An attachment for a cloth-folding machine comprising in combination a smoothsurfaced platform over which the cloth passes, a roll in proximity to the discharge edge of said platform, and means for exerting a rubbing pressure against the cloth where it passes over said roll.
5. In apparatus for folding doubled cloth, the combination comprising a. smooth-surfaced platform over which the cloth passes. said platform having an upstanding flange to guide one edge of the cloth, a roll in proximity to the discharge edge of said platform, means for exerting a rubbing pressure against the cloth where it passes over said roll, and a member having a beveled edge lying in the line of travel of the cloth and so placed that the interior of the folded edge of the cloth contacts therewith.
6. In apparatus for folding doubled cloth, the combination comprising a smooth-sun faced platform over which the cloth passes, said platform having an upstanding flange to guide one edge of the cloth, a roll in proximity to the discharge edge of the platform, and means for exerting a rubbing pressure against the cloth where it passes over said roll.
7. In apparatus forfolding doubled cloth,
the combination comprising a smooth-surfaced, sloping platform over which the cloth passes, said platform having an upstanding flange to guide the folded edge of the cloth,
roll over which the cloth passes, a flexiblysupported weight for exerting pressure against the cloth where it passes over said roll, and a member having a beveled edge lying in the line of travel of the cloth and so placed that theinterior of the folded edge of the cloth contacts therewith.
8. In apparatus for folding doubled cloth, the combination comprising a smooth-surfaced plat-form over which the cloth passes, a roll over which the cloth passes, means for exerting a rubbing pressure against the cloth where it passes over the roll, and a member having a beveled edge lying in the line of travel of the cloth and so placed that the interior of the folded. edge of the cloth con tacts therewith.
9. In apparatus for folding doubled cloth. the combination comprising a smooth-surfaced platform over which thecloth passes, means in proximity to the discharge edge of the platform for retarding the free move ment of the cloth, and a member having a beveled edge lying in the line of travel of the cloth and so placed that the interior of the folded edge of the cloth contacts therewith.
10. In apparatus for folding doubled cloth, the combination comprising a smoothsurfaced platform over which the cloth passes, means for retarding the free movement of the cloth, and a member for guidill) Jun

11. In apparatus for folding doubled cloth characterized by a reciprocating hooker blade, the combination comprising an levated, sloping, smooth-surfaced platform over which the cloth passes, means in proximity to the discharge edge of the platform for retarding the free movement of the cloth, said means being placed in the vertical plane through the mid-point of travel of the hooker blade and above the same, and a member lying substantially in said plane below said means and having a beveled vertical edge so placed that the interiorof the folded edge of the cloth contacts therewith.
12. In apparatus for folding doubled cloth, the combination comprising means for guiding the outer surface of the folded edge of the cloth, a roll co-operating with said means, means for exerting a rubbing pressure on the cloth where it passes over said roll, a member for guiding the inner surface of the folded edge of the cloth, and means for folding the cloth.
13. In apparatus for folding doubled cloth, the combination comprising a means for guiding the outer surface of the folded edge of the cloth, a roll co-operating with said means, a flexibly-supported weight for exerting a rubbing pressure against the cloth where it passes over said roll, a member for guiding the inner surface of the folded edge of the cloth, and means to fold the cloth.

In apparatus for folding doubled cloth, the combination comprising a means for guiding the outer surface of the folded edge of the cloth, a roll co-operating with said means, means for exerting a rubbing pressure against the cloth Where it passes over said roll, a member having a beveled edge lying in the line of travel of the cloth and so placed that the interior of the folded edge of the cloth contacts therewith, and means for holding the cloth.
15. In apparatus for folding doubled cloth, the combination comprising a smoothsurfaced platform over Which the cloth passes, said platform having an upstanding flange to guide the folded edge of the cloth in the line of travel thereof, a roll in proximity to the discharge edge of said platform, means for exerting a rubbing pressure against the cloth Where it passes over said roll, and. a member having a beveled edge lying in the line of travel of the folded edge of the cloth and so placed that the inner surfZLCi of the crease of the cloth contacts there- Wit 16.
