Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;I
ELIAS 'YVATERMAEQ OF OREGON, VISOONSIN.
IMPROVEME-NT IN LAM P-EXTINGUISHERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,943, dated June 9, 1874; application filed May 20, 1874.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAS WATERMAN, of Oregon, in the county of Dane and State of Visconsiu, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Extin guishers and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, vwhich will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in extinguishers for lamps, and consists in providing a sleeve which tits around and moves freely upon the wick-tube, 4and is operated by means of a weighted cam-shaped arm or lever, which passes through a staple riveted to said sleeve, and connects with an actuatingrod journaled to the outer rim of the burner.
Inthe drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan view, of my improved device.
a is the wick-tube, of ordinary construction. b is the sleeve, constructed to fit neatly around, and move freely on, the tube a, and so as to have its top flush with the top of said tube a when the lamp is burning. c is the staple, riveted to the side and near the lower end of' the sleeve b. d is a cam or curved arm. rIt passes through the staple c.. One end is firmly secured to the actuating-rod e. To the other end is riveted or otherwise firmly secured the weight f. The rod e is journaled to the rim g, and is provided with the thumb-piece h.
To extinguish the blaze, the sleeve b is raised by means of the cam d and rod e. After the blaze is put out, and the rod. e released, the sleeve will be carried back to its place around the tube by the action of the weight f.
It will be readily seen that to extinguish the blaze by turning the wick down into the tubean act often attended with accident-is entirely obviated.
Should the lamp by accident be overturned, the weight f, byits gravity, acting on the cam d, will throw the sleeve b over the wick and extinguish the blaze before the lamp reaches the Hoor, and thus prevent the iguiting of the oil should the lamp be broken.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters'Patent, 1s-
The arm d, having its outer end secured to the rod e, and its inner end provided with the weight j', in combination with the sleeve b by means of the staple c, substantially as shown, and for the purpose specifiedg In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELIASv WATERMAN.
