This invention relates to lamp extinguish.
ers, the object of the same being to provide a simple devlce to be operatedby 'a lever underneath the burner for instantly extinguishing the flame of the lamp wick.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a device which willprevent the flame from smoking the chimney of the lamp, and one that will be especially convenient on lanterns and signal lights which must be inclosed in a casing. I
Another object of the invention is to simplify the construction of extinguishers, and I to render them more eflicient in use.
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp burner having an extinguisher connected thereto and made in accordance with this invention, said burner being shown with the cap thrown up toexpose the wick tube and extinguisher, Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the extinguisher removed from the burner, and Fig. lis a detail perspective view of one of the shutter supports for the extinguisher.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates an ordinary kerosene lamp burner provided with a hinged cap, a wick tube 3, and a. series of chimney springs 1 of the usual construction. It will be'understood however that the lamp extinguisher may be connected to any suitable burner.
U-shaped supporting devices 5 and 6 .are provided with angular feet 7 and 8, each provided with a rivet hole 9, and rivets extend through these holes for connecting the supports to the burner at opposite ends of l Specification of Letters Patent; Application filed A rnia, 1915. Serial No. 22,502.

the wick tube 3. The supports 5 and 6 are each provided with integral pintles 10 said pintles 10 exte'ndingthrough the shutters 11. The shutters .11 are each provided with inclined side portions 12 connected by plain upper edges. 13 which when closed over the wick tube 3 will extinguish the The shutter members 11 are each provided with integral projections '14, and connected to said projections is a ring 15 having, a shank-16 connected to a finger lever 17. The
, finger lever is'indicated by the numeral 18 as an entirety. Connected to the finger lever 18 is a spring 19 having a coiled portion 20 and its terminal carrying upon the upper side of the foot 21 of one of the chimney springs 4. The lever '18 is pivoted at 22 to a bracket 23 depending from the underside of the burner, and said lever is provided with a finger piece 24:.
When it is desired to extinguish the lamp, the finger piece 24 is lifted up, which throws down the inner end of the lever and closes of the supports, I
the shutters together with their two edges 13 in contact.
The invention is simple in construction, is reliable in operation and can be manufactured at comparatively low cost.
Various changes may be made in the de-:
shaped supports having integral pintles formed therein, shutters pivoted to said pin- 7 ties and provided with projecting portions,
a ring connected to said projecting portions,
and a lever connected to the shank of said 7 ring, said lever beingpivoted to a bracket on the burner, and a spr ngconnected to.
the lever and adapted to hold it to its'uppermost position.
2. A lamp extinguisher comprising U-.
shaped supports each having a pair of integral pintles struck therefrom and bent at right angles thereto, said supports being connected to the lamp burner at opposite ends of the wick tube, extinguisher shutters pivoted to said pintles and provided With ed under the burner on one of the chimney extended end portions, a ring surrounding springs. 16 said projecting portions, a shank connected In testimony whereof I afiix my signature to said ring, a lever connected to said shank, in presence of two Witnesses.
