Shuttle Bobbins,7,of which the following is.
- a specification. l l
This invention relates to the bobbins enil ployed in the shuttles of sewing machines and the like; It is contemplated that it will be chieiy useful in connection with such ap` plications, but is not limited theretoI In unwinding the thi-@ador twine from y l a bobbin, the thread ort'wine is some times drawn in between the bobbin head and the end of the roll of .twine or .cord and.. the cord becoming gripped, stoppage 'o-rjbreakage of the apparatus or thread-*occurs witheu resultingvtrouble or loss of time. 'This'isespecially apt to occur in thosel forms of vbobbin wherein a cylindrical .port-ion has thethread or twineywound upon it and the -completed bobbin for use in. the shuttle is C5 formed by aflixing end heads to the cylindricalportion, because in the operation of kthe a paratus the end heads `may work slight y away from the ends of the .thread or twine roll, even if they 'are lpressed ytightly :io
thereby formed ,which render'the thread or twine'y extremely liable tov become caught in theiinwindiiig operation. Bobbins with removable," end heads as described are freriliently made use of for thereasonthat the t read ,and twine.. manufacturer usually v I winds-his thread upon a hollow pasteboard cylinder and then end headsare added, these f end heads comprising projections which tele- 4o scope'withinthe ends of the lpa'steboard tube and friction between the parts is depended j `upon" to-hold the cylinder and end heads *.together. the main object of the invention to 45. vprevent 'catching of the thread or twine as f referred to and to this end the inner side *oftheend head is made cushioning or'resilient sorthat it will conform to 'and bear 'against the. end surface of the thread roll 5o otherwise might exist between thefthread @roll andend head and, in case the heads are removable yand are backed off from the roll i i :as before referred tothe cushioning-will act nsf the .crevice ,which would otherwise against it in the first place, and spaces are on thebobbin so as to fill any crevices which `*be forinedhaiid thus from entering a clearance orcrevice'betwe'en .j \the,en'd of the thread roll and the `bobbin head, and catching ofthe thread as above referred to ise avoided. Y 60 Other and ancillary objectsof the 'inveny. tion will appearhereinafter. y In the accompanying drawings' which illustrate' the invention- Fig. 1 is a'side elevation of a. wound bob# bin embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly .in section` partly broken away,ofa shuttle having the .improved bobbin .mounted Vtherein j y Fig. 3 is aperspective View of an end head forl the bobbin 'and cushioning4 means forthe inside thereof; and l Fig. l is a perspective view of the cylinder or spool of the bobbin.
`Referring to the drawings, the bobbin therein showncomprises a hollow cylindrical spool portion 1, preferablylof pasteboard,
upon which the thread or twine 2 is wound in -any of the well known lways of winding thread upon a spool. The shuttle 3 may be of any'well known or suitable construction .havingr a bobbin recess 4 into which projects a shaft 5 whereon the bobbin is rotatably mounted.
The spool as it leaves the hands of the manufacturer comprises the cylindrical portion 1 with the thread or twine 2vwound thereon'. The metal end head portions 6 and' 7 with the felt washers 11 and v12 encircling ytheir central projections vare then applied thereto when the bobbin may bev inserted in the shuttle, the shaft 5 enteringwithin the spool portion 1 andthe end headsas. shown in Fig. 2 when the shuttle with the bobbinv can be inserted intherv sewing machine, the bobbin vrotating upon the shaft' l 5 inthe usual way. llachofthe end heads comprises a side portion 8 from which ex- 'teids a projection 9 adapted to fit rather tightly within the end of the tubefportion v 1 and a feltfwasher111'-for producing a cushion at the inside of the head, while ythe hole 10 extending entirely through the' head is of a diametersuch as to give a running it about the shaft 5. Each metall prepare the spool'ias itcomes from the 110 l` 'y end heads and spool portion.
