Description

J. B. JENSEN LOCK Filed Aug. 14, 1923 f; a 4 v M Patented Nov. 11, 1924.
OFFICE.
JAMES B. JENSEN, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
LOCK.
Application filed August 14, 1923. Serial No. 657,279.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. JENSEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in locks and more particularly to those of the rim type with which a cylinder lock is emplpyed, one object of the invention being to provide a simple construction whereby the bolt operating cam will be rendered inoperable in the event that the cylinder lock be wrenched from its anchorage to the back plate of the lock casing.
\Vith this object in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the acompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a face view ofaback plate of a rim lock structure showing an application of my improvement.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a sectional View on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
In the drawing, I have shown a sheet metal back plate 1 provided near its central portion with a plurality of holes 2, through any two of which, bolts may be passed for securing a cylinder lock in place. The inner face of the back plate 1 is countersunk or recessed as at 3 for the reception of a plateor disk 4,-said plate or disk having a hole aligning with a similar hole in the back plate for the accommodation of a hub or roll back 5 with which a roll back or bolt operating cam 6 is connected. The plate or disk 3 is notched as at 7 and the walls of the notches 7 are beveled and so disposed with respect to the holes 2 that when the cylinder securing bolts are in place, the heads of said bolts will overlie the walls of the notched portions 7 of plate or disk 3 and secure the latter in position.
It will be observed that the roll back or bolt operating cam is mounted in the plate or disk 3 and that, in the event the cylinder lock be forcibly loosened so that the bolts become broken or their heads become disengaged from the plate or disk 3, said plate or disk carrying the roll back and cam can tilt inward and prevent operation of the lock bolt.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with the back plate of a rim lock, of a separate plate or disk 'mounted on said back plate and adapted for the reception of the head portion of securing bolt means for a lock cylinder, said bolt means constituting the sole securing means for said plate or disk, and a bolt operating member mounted on and carried by said separate plate or disk.
2. The combination with the back plate of a rim lock said plate having an opening, of a separate plate or disk mounted on said back plate adjacent to the opening therein and adapted for the reception of the heads of securing bolt means for a lock cylinder, said bolt means constituting the sole securing means for said plate or disk, and a bolt operating member mounted on and carried by said separate plate or disk.
3. The combination with the back plate of a rim lock having holes for the accommodation of cylinder securing bolts, of a plate or disk mounted on said back plate and having notched portions adjacent said holes in the back plate and adapted to receive heads of the cylinder securing bolts to hold said plate or disk in place, and a bolt operating member mounted on said plate or disk.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib-
