COMBINATION ARTICLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, NATHAN. KASDAN, a citizen of Russia, and a resident of Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, and DANIEL POLLACK, a cit-izen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Vanity Articles, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is to provide a combination vanity structure possessing a number of utilities and one which may be conveniently carried and used and furnish all the usual requisites that a lady may require. v

The article of our invention is given the general form of a hand mirror comprisiing a back and a handle, and in carrying out our invention we convert the handle into a receptacle for securely receiving a lipstick and its holder and apply to the front face of said back a mirror, while at the rear face of said back the article is of boxformation and has a hinged lid, said box being adapted to contain a compact andpowder puff or the like and the inner face of'said lid being preferably equipped with a mirror which maybe used when the lid is in open position.

Our inventlon mcludes a novel construcreadily produced with the use of dies and excessive Weight and expense eliminated.

The handle for the article is hollow, and it may be either rigid with or hinged to the upper or back section of the article, 'as' may be preferred. 4

The invention will be readily understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, inwhich:

Fig.- 1 is a front elevation of a combination vanity article embodying our invention;

' Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, with the handle partly broken away, of the. same;

Fig. 3 is an edge view of the same;

Fig. 4 is avertical section through the same taken on the dotted line 44 of handle to the upper or back section instead ofhaving the same rigid as in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive;

Fig. 6 is a central vertical section through the middle portion of the same .and is presented to bring out the latch construction by which the handle whenunfolded is rigidly held in line with the upper or back section of the article, and

Fig. 7 is an edge view of the article shown in Fig. 5, with the handle illustrated as folded upwardly against the upper section thereof, this construction being desirable when the article is to be carried, in a small hand-bag.

In the drawings, referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, 10; designates the handle of the article and 11 the main back or body section thereof. The article in general outline is in the conventional shape of a hand mirror, whose back or body portion carries on its obverse face a plate glass mirror 12, and on its reverse face, 111 accordance with a portion of our invention, a box or container 13 for a powder puff, compact or like equipment, said box preferably being circular in outline and providedwith a cover 14 secured thereto by a hinge 15.

The cover 14 is of cap formation, as shown, so as to enlarge the capacity of the box and to receive on its inner flat face a mirror 16 for use when the box 13 is open and its contents are being made use of, said mirror 16 being held in place within the cap or cover 14 by a flat ring 17- tightly engaging the inner surface of theflange of the cap or cover and lapping upon the mirror 16.

-The frame construction of the article is important in that thereby we are enabled to produce an attractive article having several utilities at reasonable expense. The general frame comprises three main parts of sheet metal, one part 18 providing the another part 19 affording the box 13 and means for securing it in position and the third part 20' constituting the back of the handle 10. The part 18 is shaped in its lower portion to form a hollow Shel-10111;

lining the vertical front half of the hollow handle 10, and in its upper portion said part 18 is of beveled ring formation, as at 21, having a contracted front opening at which the fa e of he mi r 12 exp said mirror being circular and havinga beveled edge matching the inner forwardly converging or beveled surfacesof the ring 21, as shownin Fig. 4. The part 18 constituting the front half of the handle 10 and the ring or frame 21 for the mirror 12 1s in one integral piece of sheet metal. The part 19 is shaped to form the circular body of the box 13 and around the same flat base flange 22, along whose peripheral edges, except at the handle 10, the base flange 22 is flanged forwardly and downwardl as at 23, against the outer surface of the mug 21, whereby to secure the box 13'to the rin 21. Between the base flange 22 and the mirror 12 we in I terpose a disk 24 of cardboard or the like as a protection for the 'back of the mirror and to form the bottom of the box 13, said disk 24 being held in position bythe flange 22 and the secur' flange 23 by means of which the box 13 and flange 22are connected with the forward portion of the article. The part is shaped to form a hollow f shell outlining the vertical back half of the hollow handle 10 and matching the front half of. said handle, said halves of the handle meeting and being secured together at their edges to complete the handle. The upper end of the handle 10 is of cons1der able width and hence has a durable'connection with the ring 21, and the back section of the handle is finished off with a straight edge portion 25 which crosses the lower portion of the flange 22 and is-soldered. or otherwise secured thereto. The parts 18, 19 and 20, each-in one integral piece of sheet metal, may thus be readily formed and securely assembled at small expense to produce a convenient and attractive frame for the mirror and other features with which we equip the article.

I v The outer edge portions of the sides of the box 13 are offset inwardly to form anannular right angle seat26to rather-tightly receive the edge of the flange or skirt of the cap or cover 14, so that the sides of the box may have smooth uniform surfaces and. the cap or cover be capable by reason of a friction fit to remain in closed position. when. the box13isnotinuse.-

The hollow handle 10 is of special importance in that we make provision therein for ,a sheet metal holder 27 containing a lipstick 28. The handle 10 at its lower end hasa restricted oval opening '29, and in one side of the handle a recess 30;.extends upwardly from the opening 29. The holder 27 is of metal and in the orm of a split oval tube having therein an auxiliarfy holder and ollower 31 for the lower end 0 nected therewith by'a shank which fits within the recess 30 of the hen e and allows the head 32 to lie upon the handle 10 somewhat above the extreme lower end of the 'belocked in linewith the the stick 28. 'The follower 31 has a button-head 32 conwhen not in use will remain in position in the handle and yet may be withdrawn therefrom, with the lip-stick therein, when it is desired to use the same.

The article of our invention thus combin es in a small hand-mirror frame, the conveniences of a mirror, a powder puff box and a lip-stick, the whole being compactly and conveniently arranged.

In some instances it may be desirable to hinge the handle of the article so that the handle may be folded up against the mirror or convenience in carrying-the article in a small hand-bag, and we illustrate this embodiment of our invention in Figs. 5, 6, and,

The box 44 except as to the continuity of the flange 42, corresponds with the box 14 of Fig 4 and thus does not require detailed description. v 43 and to be manually released therefrom by corres onds submeans of a slide button-head 48 on said .bolt. The spring hinge 45 is adapted to hold the handle 40 folded up against the mirror ,12, as indicated in Fig. 7, and when the handle is turned downwardly for'use it may mirror by means of the latch 46 and keeper 47. The handle 40 receives the lip-stick holder 27 the same as does the handle 10, and hence this feature I does not require further detailed explanation. The handle 40 is hinged merely for the sake of compactness when it may be desired to carry the article in a small handpossesses all the conveniences of the article shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, but is a little more expensive of manufacture due to the hinging of the handle.

The shank of the slide-head 32 by eng ing the lower edge portion of the handle of the article, preferably at the recess 30, serves as a stop to prevent the lip-stick holder from being pushed unduly into the handle. a

What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:

1. A vanity article in the shape of a hand mirror comprising a handle, a body section equipped with a mirror on itsobverse face and a powder puff box on its reverse face having a hinged lid, said handle being secured to said body section and extending from the edge and in the plane thereof, and a toilet-stick holder applied within said handle and removable for use through the end thereof, said handle being hollow and formed with an opening in its lower end closely fitting said holder adjacent to its closed end leaving the closed end of the holder exposed and said holder normally closing the end ofv the handle, and said holder being a metal tube adapted to bev introduced endwise through said opening and between the front and back inner walls of the handle and containing a follower for handle being recessed up from the end-opentoilet-stick holder applied within mirror comprising a body-section equipped c with a mirror on its obverse face and a powder puff box on its reverse face having a cover, a handle hinged to one edge thereof so as to lie in the plane of said section, said handle being adapted to be folded up close against the mirror when the article is not in use, means for locking the handle in its normal operative position for use and g sai handle and removable for use through the end thereof, said handle being hollow and formed with an opening in its lower end closely fitting said holder adjacent to its closed end, leaving the closed end of the holder exposed and saidholder normally closing the end of the handle, and said holder being a metal tube adapted to be introduced endwise through said opening and between the front and back inner walls of the handle and containing a follower for the toilet-stick having an operating shank and with a mirror on its obverse face and a a powder puff box on its reverse face having a cover, a handle hinged to one edge thereof so as to lie in the plane of said section,

.said handle being adapted to be folded up close to said mirror when the article is not in use, a spring acting to retain said handle in its folded inoperative position, a spring latch for lockingthe handle in its normal operative position for use and a lip-stick holder applied within said handle and removable for use through the end of the same, said handle being hollow and having an opening in its lower end, and said holder being a metal tube adapted to be introduced endwise through said opening and between the front and back inner walls of the handle.

4. A vanity article in the shape of ahand mirror and of the character described, comprising a handle and a body section having on its obverse face a mirror and on its reverse face a powder puff box having a.

hinged lid, said body section consisting of a retaining ring engaging the edge of the mirror and said box portion, and said box portion having a base flange at the back of the outer edge portions of said mirror, an edge flange turned over upon and clutching said retaining ring and an outstanding part constituting the body of the box.
