Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. Boo'rH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Uncoupling Device for Car Gouplers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to uncoupling devices for car couplers and relates particularly to the links which connect the locking pins of car couplers with the uncoupling lever.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and novel link for the purpose specified, which conforms to M. C. B. and A. R. A. requirements, is simple in construction,
. efiective in operation, strong and durable and which will be relatively inexpensive to manufacture. 1 v
To effect the object of the invention, my improved link comprises the various features and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, in which an uncoupling link of my invention is fully illustrated,
Figure 1 is a side view of an uncoupling device embodying a link of my invention, shown as applied in use to a standard type vertical plane coupler, the link being shown in position corresponding to locking position of the coupler locking pin.
Figures 2 and 3 are detached side views of the link, on an enlarged scale, taken at ninety degrees from each other; and
Figure 4 is a sectional plan view on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing, I have for purposes of clear and definite illustration shown an end of a railroad car, indicated at A, equipped with a usual type of vertical plane coupler B and an uncoupling device C embodying a link of my invention, designated as a whole D, for connecting the uncoupling lever 0 with the locking pin 6. Excepting as regards the construction of the link D, said coupler B and uncoupling device O merely exemplify usual or approved forms of couplers and uncoupling devices, respectively, and both thereof may be of any usual or approved construction and both will be readily understood by persons skilled in the art from an examination of the drawings, without a description thereof in detail.

The link members d, d are preferably made of steel and are drop forged, and for convenience in engaging the headed projections 1, 1 with the slots 2, 2 the sides of the slots in said link members, as initially formed, are bowed or spread apart, as indicated by the dotted lines 3 in Fig. 2, the relation being such that, at their centers, the bowed sides of said slots will be spaced apart a distance'slightly greater than the corresponding dimension of the heads 1, 1 Thus, to assemble the link, it is merely necessary to place the link members together in overlapped position with the heads 1, 1 extending through the bowed openings between the sides of the slots 2, 2 as initially formed, and then to: compress the sides of said slots so that they willbe substantially parallel, thus securing said headed studs or projections in interlocked engagement therewith.
Formed in the remote ends ofthe link members d, d are eyes 4 and 5 which respectively engage corresponding eyes 6 and 7 formed at the end of the uncoupling lever a and on the projecting upper end of the 7 locking pin 6.
To provide for conveniently attaching the eyes 4 and 5 on the link members to the eyes 6 and 7 on the uncoupling lever c and on the locking pin 6, said links will preferably be supplied on order with the eyes 4 and 5 open, as shown in dotted lines at 8,
Fig. 3, so that, to finish the connection after said eyes 4 and 5 have been engaged with the eyes 6 and 7, it will be necessary merely to bend the off-set portions 8 of said. eyes 4 and 5 into closed position.
All connections between the link mem-' bers d, d and between said link members and the uncoupling lever 0 and the locking pin 5 are made with suflicient clearance not only to provide for desired freedom of movement in operation without danger of binding, but also to prevent the link from freezing upthat is becoming clogged comprising headed projections formed on their proximate ends, Which respectively slidably engage slots formed in the other 15 link members.
2. A link as specified in claim 1, in Which the link members are facsimiles of each other.
