Be it known that I, GEORGE C. MURRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draw-Bars and Yokes, of which the following is a specication.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a new and improved connecting means for a draw-bar and yoke. Another object of my invention is to provide a new and improved draw-bar and yoke of such construction. as to permit the replacement of a damaged draw-bar byv a new draw-bar without removing the draft gear from the car. Another object of my invention is to provide a new and improved draw-bar and yoke so constructed as to permit the draft gear to be removed from a car equipped therewith and replaced, Without the necessity for also removing the draw-bar and yoke.
The device herein disclosed is a modifica` tion of the apparatus disclosed in my Patent No. 1,000,932, granted August 15, 1911.
For the purpose of clearly explaining the nature of my invention I have shown a specific embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings, together with certain modifications and I now proceed to describe the device as illustrated and explain its manner of operation.
Referring to the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a drawbar and yoke constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, partly in section.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal section shown in perspective.
Fig. 4 is a perspective showing certain elements of the combination spaced apart.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the box turned 90 degrees from the position shown in Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of the yoke.
The draw-bar 25 is provided with the usual shoulders 26 to be engaged by the shoulders 32 at the outer end of the yoke. The yoke comprises upper and lower members 27 and 28 having lugs 29 and 30 at their inner ends which are engaged by a pin 31 to form a hinge joint. A box, designated generally by the reference numeral 33, surrounds the outer end of the yoke. This box 33 has inturned lips or shoulders 39 which hook over the shoulders 32 on the outer end of the yoke. It will be observed that these lips 39 are spaced from the top and bottom surface of the draw-bar 25; in other words, the vertical opening between the opposed lips 39 is made as wide as the vertical depth of the head of the draw-bar 25, so that the box 33 can be slipped on or off over the shoulders 26.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings the draw-bar 25 is shown with its lateral faces tapering slightly, so that the draw-bar 25 is thicker, in a horizontal direction, close to the coupler head than away therefrom. The box 33 has its sides 34 swelled outwardly, as shown in the drawings, so that the width between the side walls 34 is as great as the thickness of the draw-bar 25 at a point toward the coupler end thereof.
The side walls of the box 33 have holes 37 and there is a registering hole in the end of the draw-bar 25. Through all of these holes the key 38 may be passed and secured by cotter pins 40. The side walls 34 of the box 33 are made wider, in the longitudinal direction of the car, as indicated at 36, so as to supply the necessary metal at every horizontal cross section of the box.
Assuming that the parts are assembled in their normal relation, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and that it is desired to remove the drawebar, the procedure is as follows: One of the cotter pins 40 is removed and then the key 38 is removed. Next the box 33 can be slipped along the draw-bar 25 toward the coupler head until it clears the shoulders 39 on the yoke members 27 and 28. After this the yoke members 27 and 28 can be spread apart slightly at their outer ends either by swinging the upper member 27 up about the hinge pin 31, or swinging the lower member 28 down; and then the draw-bar 25 can be pulled out. It will be seen that when the draw-bar has been removed the box 33 can easily be slipped oii" over the shoulders 26.
In introducing a new draw bar, the box 33 is first slipped around the same to a position toward the coupler head, then the shoulders 26 on the draw-bar are brought between the yoke members 27 and 28 and the latter brought together so that their shoulders 32 engage the shoulders 26. Thereafter, the box 33 is slipped back around the ends of the yoke members 27 and 28, and the key 38 and the Cotter pins 40 put in place. p
When it is desired to remove the draft gear, the lower yoke member 28 can be swung down around the hinge pin 31 and then the draft gear can be displaced downwardly from its normal position.
A moments consideration will show that if the draw-bar 25 is not tapered, still the same box 33 can readily be used with it, or in this case the box can be made without the side swells 34, if preferred.
If a solid yoke is used, as shown in Fig. 6,'then in removing the draw-bar, after the box 33 has been slipped along toward the coupler head, the yoke can be moved sidewise to disengage the yoke shoulders 32 from the draw-bar shoulders 26. A similar lateral displacement of the yoke relatively to the draw-barmay be employed in assembling the parts.
It will be understood that the foregoing specific description is of a particular embodiment of my invention; what I regard as my invention is defined Vin' the following claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with a tapered drawbar, a yoke, means for connecting them,
and a displaceable box surrounding both the draw-bar and the yoke to hold them in connection, said box having its vertical side 35 walls spaced from said draw bar.
