TOILET SEAT AND SEAT-COVER ADJUSTING- MEANS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. STASZAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toilet Seat and Seat-Cover Adjusting Means, of which the following is a specification.

One of the objects of my said invention is the provision of simple and reliable operating means through the medium of which a person with his foot'may simultaneously raise-a toilet seat and seat cover and hold the same in raised position, the means being sanitary in character inasmuch as it is unnecessary for the operator to apply the hand to either the seat or the cover.

Another object of the invention is the provision of means of the character indicated in which theseat cover alone may be raised by the manipulation of a hand device, the hand being applied to the said device at a point remote from the cover.

Other objects and practical advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my novel means in proper association with a ..water closet bowl, a seat and a seat cover,

the said seat and seat cover being shown in closed position.

Figure 2 is a similar 'view with the seat and seat cover in raised position.

nected at 5 to the cover 3, and the arrangement being such that the seat cover 3 will be rasied when the seat 2 is raised, and this notwithstanding the fact that the seat cover 3 can be raised and lowered independently of the seat 2. I

In carrying out my invention, I employ among other elements a pedestal 6 which includes a base 7 adapted to be fixed at 8 to a floor and an upright 9 fixed to said base 7.

I also employ a foot lever 10 fulcrumed at an intermediate point 11 of its length on the upright 9, and a retractile spring 12, the

function of which is to return the parts to normal positionsubsequently to an operation of the mechanism as hereinafter described.

Hingedly connected at 13 to the lever 10 and extending upwardly therefrom is a bar 14, and appropriately connected to the said bar 14 is what I designate the lower bracket 15 of the mechanism, the said bracket 15 being connected at 16 with the seat 2 for the transmission of movement of the bar 14. At 17 is what I designate an upper bracket which is associated with the bar 14 above the bracket 15 and is connected at 18 with the seat cover 3. The said upper bracket 17 is provided at a point remote from the seat cover 3 with a handle 19 for use in the raising of the seat cover 3 independently of the seat 2.

Arranged on the same support as the pedestal 6 is a bumper 21 of rubber or other appropriate material which is positioned in opposed relation to the lower end of timber 14- and is designed on the sudden downward movement of the bar 14 under the action of the spring 12 to cushion the bar 14 as well as all of the parts connected with the said bar 14. and absorb shock and jar;

By'virtue of my novel mechanism it will be manifest that a person by the application of his foot to the broad end portion 23 of the lever 10 is enabled to raise in concert both the seat 2 and the seat cover3, and is also enabled to return the said seat and seat cover in raised position. When, however, the pressure of the foot on the lever 10 is removed, the spring 12 will operate to promptly close the seat and seat cover and in so doing will return all of the parts of my novel mechanism to their normal positions.

It frequently happens that a person is desirous ofraising the cover 3 without raising of the seat 2, and therefore the handle 19 on the upper bracket 17 is provided. Manipulation of the handle 19 entails, of course. the use of one hand, but the hand is applied at a point remote from the seat and seat cover, and hence the said provision does not detract in appreciable measure from the sanitary character of my improvement.

The brackets 15 and 17 are connected by links 25 and 26 which are pivotally con nected together and are also pivotally connected to the said links. The link 26 is beveled at 27, Figures 1, 2 and 5, and the link 25 is equipped with a sprin strip 28, said strip having at its upper en a lateral beveled head 29. in virtue of this construction it will be manifest that when the seat 2 and cover?) are raised together by foot pressure applied to the lever 10, the cover 3 will be lowered with the seat 2 when pressure is removed from the lever 10 and the spring 12 is permitted to retract. It will also be manifest that when upward stress is applied to the handle 19 to raise the seat cover 3 alone, the link 26 will ride upwardly out of engagement withand past the head 29 while when the independently-raised cover 3 is lowered by hand to the horizontal position the link 26 will'ride past and assame a position below the head 29, Figure 5, in readiness for a raising of the seat 2 and cover 3 by pressure applied to the lever 10.

I have elected to show my improvements at one certain side of a water-closet bowl, but it is obvious that my improvements may be used at either side of the bowl in the discretion of the manufacturer.

Notwithstanding the practical advantages ascribed to my improvement in the foregoing, it will be apparent that the improvement is simple, inexpensive and strong in construction, and is well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which toilet apparatus is ordinarily subjected particularly in public toilets.

I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention I as in the future practice 0 the inventionin order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the specific construction and relative arrangement of arts inasmuch various changes and modifications may be made such as fail. within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claims.

Having described my invention, what 13 claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent,

The combination with the hingedly mounted seat and seat cover complementary to a water closet bowl, of a base, afoot lever fulcrumed on the base, a bar connected to and extending upwardly from the foot lever, a lower bracket carried by the seat and connected with the bar, an upper bracket carried by the seat cover and connected with the bar, a spring relatively arranged to restore the foot lever bar and brackets to normal position and the seat and 'seat cover to closed positions and a detachable connection between the brackets; the said upper bracket being provided at a point remote from' the seat cover with a handle whereby through the medium of thethe bar, and a spring relatively arranged to restore the foot lever bar and brackets to normal position and the seat and seat cover hand the seat cover may be raised and lowcred independently of the seat. 3. The combination with the hingedly mounted seat and seat cover complementary to a water closet bowl, of a foot device, means operable by said device for the simultaneousopening of the seat and the seat cover, means detachably connecting the seat and cover and a spring for restoring the said elements to normal positions and thereby closing the seat and seat cover.

4.
