TOILET ATTACHMENT;

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER H. SAGERLE. citizen of United States, residing at Marianna, in the county of Jackson and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such'as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an attachment for toilets or Water closets, and the primary object of the invention is to provide foot operated means for raising and lowering .the cover or seat of the bowl and also for flushing the toilet.

More specifically, the object of this invention is to provide a longitudinally movable bar which is connected to the pivoted seat or cover of a toilet bowl and also to provide a lurality of pawls, and levers which are co trolled by the depressions of foot rods for moving the bar longitudinally to move the pivoted seat and also to operate the flushing mechanism of the toilet at the time when the seat'is started to be moved into a closed position.

With the foregoing and other objects in View this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawingsand claimed.

In describing the invention. in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which:

which has the usual type of pivoted cover 2 of the seat of the same. The toilet bowl 1 is supported on the floor 3, and a supporting plate or boards is attached to the under surface of the floor 3 and extends down Wardly therefrom. The supporting board,

or plate 4 has a plurality of rollers 5 rotatably carried thereby which form guides for guiding the longitudinal movement of a bar 6.- The bar -6 is connected by means of a pin 7 to the cover 2 of the toilet, so that the cover will be moved upon its hinges, upon longitudinal movement of the bar 6.

The plate ethas a peculiarly shaped pawl 8 pivotally carried thereby as shown at 9,

and this pawl is provided with a projecting point 10." The point 10 is provided witha notch 11, near itsouter end, at one edge of the same and the upper side of the extension terminates in an abrupt shoulder 12 which L extends outwardly and communicates with the curved side 13 of the pawl.

The bar 6 has pins 14 and. 15 carried thereby between which the extension 10 projects, as clearly shown in the drawings. A second pawl 17 is pivotally connected as shown'at 18 to the supporting plate 4:, and

. 22 is connected to the lever 20 above its pivot 21 and to the supporting plate 4. Whenthe bar 6 is in a downwardly extended position, the upper end of the lever 20 is engaged by the lower end of a foot lever or tread 23 which 'is slidably carriedby the'floor 3 and projects above the same, so that when'it is desired to raise the cover 2, the foot lever 23 is depressed, which depression, together with the assistance of the spring 22 will move the normal up erend of the lever 20 downwardly, roc 'ng the lever 20 and causing it to rock the pawl 8. The pawl 8, 1s, when the bar faces in a downwardly projected position engaged by the pin 14 so that when this pawl .is rocked, by the rocking of the lever 20 it will be forced'upwardly' upon its pivot which will move the bar 6 upwardly,

. it has a spring 18 connected thereto which causing it to raise the cover 2 into the position as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, at which time the end of the extension of the pawl is seated in the recess formed in the pawll8. This pawl 18 supports the pawl 8 I in its upper positions, for the period of time that the cover 2 is raised. To lower the cover 2, pressure is applied to a second foot lever 24 which is slidably carried by thefioor 3 and engages the edge of the enlarged porward movement of the pawl will also rock the lever 20, causing it to resume its normal position and to force the foot lever 23 upwardly through the floor into a position to /be operated. The rod or chain 25- which operates the flushing mechanism of the toilet has a pin 26 carried thereby whicl. pin is engaged by a pivoted pawl 27. The pawl 27 is pivotally secured to a suitablesupport 28 as at 27. When the bar 6 is moved into its upper position by the depression of the 'foot lever 23, the upper end of the bar will slide between the pivoted pawl 27 and when the foot lever 24 is depressed for lowering the cover 2, a slight upward and outward movement will be imparted to the upper end of the bar 6 which will rock the pawl 27 The rocking of the pawl 27 causes the same to engage the pin 26, thus forcing the rod or chain 25 downwardly,- so that. the toilet 1 will be flushed at the same time that the cover 2 is lowered.

In reducing the invention to practice, certain minor features of'const-ruction, combination and arrangement of parts may necessitate alterations to which the patentee is entitled provided such alterations are comclaimed.

What is claimed is:

1; The combination with a toilet having a pivoted cover, of a bar connected to said cover, a pair of pins carried by said bar, a

4. The combmation with an article having a pivoted cover, of a bar connected to said cover, a pair of pins carried by said bar,

a pivotally mounted pawl having a portion extending between said pins, a pivotally supported lever engaging one edge of said pawl, a foot lever engaging said last named lever for moving said pawl upon depression of the foot lever to move said rod upwardly to move said cover into an open position, a second pivotally mounted pawl provided with a recess for receiving the end of said first named pawl when the first named pawl is in an upper position.

5. The combination with an article having a pivoted cover, of a bar connected to said cover, a pair of pins carried by said bar, a pivotally mounted pawl having a portion extending between said pins, a pivotally supported lever engaging one edge of said pawl. a foot lever engaging said last named lever for moving said pawl upon depression of the footlever to move said rod upwardly to move said cover into an open position. a second pivotally mounted pawl provided with a recess for receiving the end of said first named pawl when the first named pawl is in an upper position. a second foot lever attached to engage said pawl when it is in an upper position whereby the pawl will be moved downwardly upon' depression of the second foot lever to move said bar downwardly to close said cover.
