FILLING-REIPLENISHING LOOM.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs E. NORMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Filling-Replenishing Looms, of which the following description, in corn nection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the draw ings representing like parts.
This invention relates to filling replenishing looms wherein the filling in the run ning shuttle is replenished when the filling fails to be laid in the shed on a detecting beat.
In that type of filling replenishing looms where a fresh supply of filling is furnished when that in the active shuttle becomes entirely exhausted or broken, it has been proposed heretofore to provide a detecting mechanism at one side of the loom for replenishing the filling on detection of filling absence, and another detecting mechanism on the opposite side of the loom for controlling the action of the replenishing detector or effecting loom stoppage in case filling is exhausted on a predetermined number of detecting beats. In this type of filling replenishing looms, however, the loom has been brought to rest heretofore with the shuttle in the non-replenishing box, with the result that the weaver is called upon to remove the shuttle from the non-replerr ishing box, supply it with a fresh filling carrier, thread the shuttle and start the loom. The delay in carrying these opera tions out manually by the weaver has materially lessened the output of the loom and has thrown upon the weaver many added duties.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a filling replenishing loom of the type referred to wherein upon a succession of filling failures or detections of filling absence by the stopping detector, the loom may be brought to rest with the shuttle in the replenishing box and the replenishing mechanism itself positioned to effect a transfer of the filling automatically to the shuttle upon the first beat-up movement of the lay following loom stoppage.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a filling replenishing detector at the non-replenishing side of the loom Serial No. 614,541.
and a stopping detector at the replenishing side of the loom which may be readily changed to effect loom stoppage on the occurrence of two or more absences of filling by the stopping detector with the shuttle in the replenishing box and the filling replenishing mechanism positioned to effect transfer when the loom is again started.
A good practical form of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of a filling replenishing loom containing the present invention, certain parts of the loom being broken away for clearness of illustration;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detached perspective view showing the stopping detector and means for suspending take-up when filling failure is indicated by either the replenishing or stopping detector;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of portions of the stopping detector with the parts in separated relation to show more clearly the means for changing the time of operation of the stopping detector; and
Fig, 4 is an enlarged detached side elevation of the stopping detector mechanism in the position the parts occupy to stop the loom following detection of filling absence by the stopping detector.
It has not been deemed necessary herein to illustrate and describe in detail the filling replenishing mechanism except in so far as it is controlled by the replenishing detector, because such replenishing mecha nism may be of any usual and well-known type.
in the present instance of the invention the loom frame 1 has mounted at one side thereof the hopper or magazine stand 2 which supports a rotary hopper 3 contain ing filled carriers or bobbins l, and as usual in this type of hopper or magazine mechanism the filling carriers are presented in position for transfer by means for giving the rotary hopper rotary movement from time to time as the filling carriers are transferred. These details, however, form no essential part of the present invention, and being well understood by those skilled in the art, further illustration or vdescription thereof is not deemed necessary.
The lay 5 at one side has the non-replen- Ill ishing shuttle box 6 which may be of usual construction, and at the opposite side of the loom the lay is provided with the filling replenishing shuttle box 7 which may also be of usual construction to permit the filling carrier in the shuttle to be ejected by the incoming filling carrier under the action of the usual transfer-rel.
As shown in Fig. 1, the warp threads a extend from the fell of the cloth Z) rearwardly through the reed 8 of the lay and the cloth passes frontwardly over the breast beam 9 ,to the .cloth take-up roll 10 which may be driven through a train of mechanism from a going part of the loom, such mechanism in the present instance being shown. as a series of gears 11, 12, 13 .and 1 4, which are driven step by step through a ratchet'wheel 15 mounted on the stud 16, Fig. 2, supported by the loom frame.
The ratchet wheel 15 may he stepped along to effect takeup of the cloth by any suitable mechanism, which in the present instance comprises an arm 17 carrying a take-up pawl 18 and given a take-up movement .by a going part of the loom, such, for instance, as the lay. I
Mounted at the non-replenishing side of. the loom is. the filling replenishing detector A which, in the present instance, comprises the filling or weft fork 19 pivotal-1y mounted at 20 on a slide 21 and having a frontwardly extending portion 22 for engagement by a hook23 carried by the weft fork or .cam follower 24; The slide 21 is mounted in the stand 25 and its front end bears against a finger 26 which is secured to the transfer shaft 27 carried in bearings of the brackets 28, one at each side of the loom.
The filling replenishing .detector may be of usual. constructionand the transverse or rock shaft 27 is normally .under the influence of the usual spring 29 serving to hold the arm 26 against the front of the filling fork slide.
The transfer shaft 27 at the replenishing side of the loom has secured to it an upwardly extending member 30, in the present instance, which is connected by a link 31 to a rocker arm 32, the hub portion 33 of which carries a dog engaging finger 34. The finger 34 is provided with a slot 35 into which projects the pin 36 carried by'the transferrer dog 37 which is itself pivotally mounted upon the downwardly projectingportion 38 of the .transferrer, which may be of usual construction.
The rocker 3 2 is connected by a link 39 to the upwardly extending member .40 of a shu t e f l r mou te or oc ing mo ment onv the stud or dead shaft 42 The construction is suchthat should the filling replenishing detector detect the absence of filling-on afdetecting beat when the shuttle is in the non-replenishing box, the hook 23 ofthe weft hammer or cam follower will be engaged by the member 22 of the weft fork, and the slide 21 will be moved frontwardly to position the dog 37 of the replenishing mechanism for engagement with :the usual hunter on the lay to efiect the transfer of a fresh filling carrier to the shuttle when the shuttle again reaches the filling replenishing box.
In view of the fact that no filling may be laid in the shedby the shuttle when it is picked from the non replenishing to the replenishing box after detection of filling failure by the filling replenishing detector, it is desirablethat take-up be'suspended. To this end the shaft 27, Fig. 2, has secured thereto an arm 43, the rearwardly extending end portion of which is provided with a yoke 44 which is adapted to lift the pawl carrier 17 when the shaft 27 is rocked contra-clockwise, Fig. 2, to thereby render the feed pawl 18 inactive.
Mounted upon the loom frame at the replenishing side of the. loom is the stopping detector B which, in the present instance, comprises the weft or filling fork 45 pivot-,
' ally mounted at 16 on the slide 17 and hav ing a tail piece 48 adapted to engage a hook 49 of the weft fork or cam follower 50 when the weft or filling fork fails to be tilted on 1/ a detecting beat. The slide 4-7 is mounted upon the stand 51 and its front end portion at'52 bears against the end of an arm 53 which. is loosely mounted upon the shaft 27. lVhen the stopping detector detects fail-' ure of filling, it is desirable that take-up be suspended, and ifthe pawl carrier 17 has just operated the ratchet wheel 15, it is desirable to let the wheel back a tooth. To this end the hub portion 54 of the arm 53. carries a member 55, the end 56 of which is connected by a link 57 to the check pawl 58, the end 59 of which normally rides on the teeth of the ratchet wheel 15. Associated with the hold pawl 58 is the let-back pawl 60 which may be of usual construction and has, in the present instance, a slot 61 which. engages the pin 62 which serves as a mounting for the holding or check pawl 58, the construction being such that when the holding or check pawl 58 is disengaged from the teeth of the ratchet and the actuating pawl carrier 17 is on its backward stroke, the letback pawl 60 will permit the ratchet wheel 15 to let back one tooth.
Loosely mounted on the transfer or rock shaft 27 is a sleeve 63 which extends transversely of the loom and has secured to it at the non-replenishing side of the loom, in this instance, a knock-off finger 64, the upper portion of which extends laterally and backwardly as at 65, and has its end portion turned downwardly at 66 back of the knockoff lever 67 which, as shown, is pivoted at 68 to the shipper stand 69.
The shipper for disengaging the power from the loom may be of usual construction and control the well-known brake mecha nism in order to bring the loom to rest promptly when the shipper is disengaged from its holding notch 71.
The purpose of the stopping detector B is to efiect loom stoppage after two or three or more detections of filling failure by the stopping detector, with the shuttle in the replenishing box, in order that the filling replenishing detector A may, between two or more detections by the stopping detector,

In the present instance of the invention the slide 47 of the stopping detector has mounted for rotative movement thereon the toothed tumbler 72 supported upon a lug 73 rising from the slide 47. The toothed tumbler 72 has a series of teeth 74. and one deep recess 75. Pivotally supported on the slide 47 is the stop member 76 which is provided with a lug 77 adapted to ride over the teeth of the tumbler. In the present instance the stop member 76 is pivotally supported upon the lugs 78 and has a. rearwardly extending portion 79 adapted to be engaged by the cam follower 50, and the parts heretofore described may be substantially the same as the corresponding parts shown in the patent to Northrop, No. 1,186,938, June 13,1916.
The toothed tumbler 72 has connected to it a governor 80 having an overweighted portion 81 which, when the parts are in normal position as indicated in Fig. 2, rests upon the top surface of the slide 47. The governor 80 is connected to the tumbler in the present instance, to permit relative adjustment of the tumbler and governor for the determination of the number of filling failure detections by the stopping detector that should be necessary to stop the loom with the shuttle in the replenishing box. As shown, the hub portion of the governor 80 is mounted upon the stud or shaft 82 eX- tending laterally from the tumbler and has a series of holes 83 which permit the governor to be connected to the shaft 82 of the tumbler in different relative positions by means such as a cotter pin 8%, the construction being such that by adjustment of the governor relative to the tumbler, the number of detections of filling failure by the stopping detector may be varied to bring the loom to stop on the second, third or fourth detection of filling failure by the stopping detector, as will now be described.
Secured to the transversely extending sleeve 63 is an arm 85, Fig. 2, which has pivotally connected thereto the tumbler rotator and stopping finger 86, the end portion 87 of which is normally in position to engage a tooth of the tumbler as the tumbler is moved frontwardly with the slide L7 on detection of filling failure by the stopping detector. The stopping member 76 has a face portion 88 which, when it is allowed to drop by the projection 77 of the stopping member entering the deep notch 7 5 of the tumbler, comes into the path of the end portion 87 of the tumbler rotator and stop finger 86, and by frontward movement of the slide 47 causes the sleeve 63 to be rocked to effect loom stoppage through the knock-off lever 67.
The number of step rotative movements to be imparted to the tumbler 72 to permit the face portion 88 of the stopping member 76 to drop to its lower position, as indicated in Fig. 4, may be varied by adjusting the gov ernor 80 relative to the tumbler 72.
If it be desired to stop the loom with the shuttle in the replenishing box on the second detection of filling failure by the stopping detector, the governor 80 is connected to the tumbler 7 2 to hold the tumbler in position with the projection 77 of the stopping member 76 resting on the teeth of the tumbler next to the deep recess 75, so that on the first detection of filling failure by the stopping detector as the shuttle enters the replenishing box, the slide 47 will be moved frontwardly by the weft hammer 50 to cause the finger 86 to engage a tooth of the tumbler and turn it one tooth, whereupon the projection 77 of the member 76 will drop into the deep recess of the tumbler and the face 88 of the member 76 will be lowered into position to engage the end of the finger 86 on the next frontward movement of the slide. If, therefore, the stopping detector again detects filling failure on a detecting beat with the shuttle in the replenishing box, the face 88 of the member 76 will engage the end of the finger 86, turn the sleeve 63 and knock off the shipper, with the result that the loom will stop with the shuttle in the replenishing boX.
lVhen the loom is started again after being stopped by the stopping detector, the cam follower 50 upon moving frontwardly strikes the end portion 79 of the stop member 76 and rocks the forward end of the stop member upwardly to lift the projection 77 thereof out of the deep notch 7 5, whereupon the toothed tumbler 72 rotates to its normal position, shown in Fig. 2, under the action of the weighted governor 80.
Between the first and second detections of filling failure by the stopping detector, the
lay moves frontwardly, however, with the shuttle in the replenishing box the stop detector detects filling failure and stops the loom before the lay has completed its full frontward movement. The loom is now stopped with the shuttle in the replenishing box and the replenishing mechanism positioned to effect transfer as soon as the loom is again started without any attention on the par-t of the weaver, as heretofore necessary when the loom was stopped with the shuttle in the non-replenishing box.
In accordance with the present invention,
the weaver is relieved from duties heretofore required when the loom was stopped with the shuttle in the non-replenishing boX, as is the usual custom, and when the loom is again started after having been stopped by the stopping detector, a fresh filling carrier is at once transferred to the shuttle as the lay completes its frontward movement and weaving continues with full picks of filling laid in the shed.
What is claimed is:
1. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a weft or filling fork detector mechanism at the non-replenishing side of the loom, replenishing mechanism controlled by the said detector mechanism to transfer a fresh supply of filling to the shuttlewhen the latter reaches the replenishing side of the loom following detection of filling failure by the said detector mechanism, a second detector mechanism at the replenishing side of the loom, and stopping mechanism controlled by the second detector mechanism to stop the loom with the shuttle in the filling replenishing box and the replenishing mechanism positioned to effect replenishment of filling on the first frontward movement of the lay following loom stoppage.
2. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a filling replenishing detector at one side of the'loom, a stopping detector at the opposite side of the loom, filling replenishing mechanism controlled by the filling replenishing detector, stopping mechanism controlled by the stopping detector, and means for causing the stopping detector to stop the loom through the stopping mechanism with the shuttle in the filling replenishing box only after a predetermined number of filling failure detections by the stopping detector and after the filling replenishing detector has positioned the replenishing mechanism to effect a transfer of filling to the shuttle on the first beat-up movement of the lay when the loom is again started.
3. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a filling replenishing detector at one side of the loom, a stopping detector at the opposite side of the loom, filling filling replenishing detector, stopping mechanism controlled by the stopping detector, including a knock-off lever for releasing the shipper, a filling fork carrying slide, a rock shaft having an arm rigid therewith and adapted to be actuated by themovement of said slide, a second arm rigid with said shaft and positionedvto impart movement of the slide to the knock-oft lever to release the shipper, and means upon said slide and controlled by the stopping detector to actuate the first mentionedarm to stop the loom only after a predetermined number of filling failure detections by the stopping detector.
l. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a detecting mechanism at the non-replenishingside of the loom for effecting replenishment of filling on the first detection of filling failure on a detecting beat, a second independent detector mechanism at the replenishingside of the loom for stopping the loom operation, and a stopping mechanism controlled by the second detector mechanism to stop the loom on the occurrence of a predetermined number of filling failures when the shuttle is in the box at the replenishing side of the loom and the replenishing mechanism is positioned for replenishment of filling on the first beatup movement of the lay following loom stoppage.
5. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a filling replenishing detector at one side of the loom, a stopping detector at the opposite side of the .loom, filling replenishing mechanism controlled by the filling replenishing detector, stopping mechp anism controlled by the stopping detector, and means for causing the stopping detector to stop the loom through the stopping mechanism with the shuttle in the filling replenishing boX only after a predetermined number of filling failure detections by the stopping detector and after the filling replenishing detector has positioned-the replenishing mechanism to effect a transfer of filling to the shuttle on the first beat-up movement of the lay when the loom'is again started, and means for suspendin the takeup when either detector detects filling failure.
6. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a filling replenishing detector at the non-replenishing side of the loom, replenishing mechanismn including'a dog which is positioned by the said detector upon detection of filling failure to effect replenishment of filling when the shuttle is in the replenishing box, a stop-ping detector at the replenishing side of the loom, stopping mechanism for stopping the loom with the shuttle in the replenishing box upon the occurrence of a plurality of filling failures by the stopping detector and at least one failure of .filling by the filling replenishing detector that the loom may be stopped with the dog positioned to effect replenishment of filling on the first beat-up movement of the lay following loom stoppage.
7. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of filling replenishing mechanism including a dog, a filling replenishing de tector at the non-replenishing side of the loom connection between said detector and dog for operatively positioning the latter when the said detector detects filling failure on a detecting beat, a stopping detector at the replenishing side 01 the loom, means including a shipper actuated by the stopping detector to stop the loom upon detection oi? filling failure a. determined number of times in succession by the stopping detector and at least once by the filling replenishing d tector that the loom may come to rest with the shuttle in the replenishing box and the dog positioned for actuating the replenishing mechanism when the loom is again started.
8. In a filling replenishing loom. the combination of filling replenishing mechanism including a dog, a filling replenishing detector at the non-replenishing side oi? the loom, connection between said detector and dog for operatively positioning the latter when the said detector detects filling :t'aib ure on a detecting beat, a stepping detector at the replenishing side of the loom, means including a shipper actuated by the stopping detector to stop the loom upon detection of filling failure a determined number of times in succession by the stopping detector and at. least once by the filling replenishing detector that the loom may come to rest with the shuttle in the replenishing box and the dog positioned for actuating the replenishing mechanism when the loom is again started, and means for suspending take-up upon detection of filling failure by either detector.
9. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of filling replenishing mechanism including a dog, a filling replenishing detector at the non-replenishing side of the loom, connection between said detector and dog for operat-ively positioning the latter when the said detector detects filling failure on a detecting beat, a stopping detector at the replenishing side out the loom means for selectively determining the number of successive detections of filling failure by the stopping detector necessary to render it effective to stop the loom, means including a shipper actuated by the stopping detector to stop the loom upon detection of filling failure a determined number of times in succession by the stopping detector and at least once by the filling replenishing detector tht the loom may come to rest with the shuttle in the replenishing box and the dog positioned for actuating the replenishing mechanism when the loom is again started.
10. In a filling replenishing l0om,the com bination of filling replenishing mechanism, a filling replenishing detector at one side oi the loo-m for operatively positioning the replenishing mechanism on detection of filling :t'ailure a stopping detector at the opposite side of the loom, comprising a toothed tumbler, a governor, means for varying the number of tumbler movements necessary to render the stopping detector entire to stop the loom, and a shipper which is actuated by the stopping detector to stop the loom when the tumbler has made the predetermined number of movements.
11. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of filling replenishing mechanism, means for replenishing the filling on filling failure, a stopping detector including a tumbler a governor, an adjustable connection between the tumbler and governor for varying the number of tumbler movements necessary for rendering the stopping detector efiective, and stopping mechanism actuated by the stopping detector to stop the loom when the tumbler has been given the predetermined number of tumbler movements.
