Description
Patented Aug. 19, 1924.
STATES EZRA KAPLAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FAN.
Application filed August 29, 1923.
To all whom t may concern.' n
Be it known that I, EZRA KAPLAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fans, of which the following is a s} eciiication.v
lll/Iy invention relates to improvements in fans and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character by means of which a satisfactory fan may be made of comparatively cheap materials and which will be eflicient in use.
Other objects will-appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described yand claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication, and in which,
Fig. l is a face view of a fan embodying the invention, and
Fig. 2 a lsection taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a fan -body 3 shaped as indicated from a sheet of comparatively thin card-board or similar material. The lower edge of the fan body 3 is 1re-enforced by a sheet of material 4c said sheet of material t being doubled upon itself at il and arranged to embrace the lower edge of the sheet 3 thus providing a re-enforcing sheet on each side of the fan sheet.
rlhe sheet L is secured in place by being glued to the opposite sides of the sheet 3 with a handle portion 5 extending there from. It will be noted that the handle portion 5 is comparatively short and wide in form having a flat outer end G and recessed sides 7. Perforations 8 and 8 are formed through the sheets 3 and 4 as indicated said perforations serving to lighten the construction without materially weakening the same. One of the perforations 8 is arranged within the body of the sheet 3 but immediately adjacent and opposite the handle 5 to be in close enough relation thereto so as `to serve as a thumb hole. By this arrangement the handle member 5 may be grasped on both sides if desired, the recesses 7 facilitating such manipulation thereof. Or if desired,
Serial No. 659,928.
the flat end 6 may be restedk aga-inst the palm of the hand and the thumb hooked through the thumb hole 8', such arrangement permitting .of satisfactory use of the fan in this manner.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my inventioninto effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1
therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within Vthe scope of the appended claims.
Havingdescribed my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A fan member made of a thin sheet of material reinforced at one edge by another sheet of material folded upon itself to em brace the opposite sides of one edge of said fan sheet, the folded edge of said re-inforcing sheet being extended beyond said fan sheet and formed into a handle portion, the inner portions of said re-inforcing sheet being extended well onto the body lof said fan sheet, there being a plurality of perforations extending through the inner portions of said re-inforcing sheets, substantially as described.
2. A. fan made of a thin sheet of material re-enforced at one edge by another sheet of material folded upon itself to embrace the opposite sides of one edge of said fan sheet, the folded edge of said re-inforcing sheet being extended beyond said fan sheet, and formed into a comparatively short and wide handle portion, the sides of said handle portion being recessed and the folded end thereof fiat, there being one or more perforations extending through said re-enfo-rcing sheets, one of said perforations being located within the body of said fan immediately adjacent said handle to constitute a thumb hole, substantially as described.
ln testimony whereof. I have signed my name to this specificationin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
` EZRA `KAPLAN.
