INVENTOR WITNESSES ATToRN EY s PAT HENRY MILTOH MONTGOMERY, OF CEDAR VALE,
ERASER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec, 11, 191?.
Application filed July 13, 1917. Serial No. 180,485.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. MONT- GOMERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Vale, in the county of Chautauqua and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Erasers, of which the following is a specifica tion.
' This invention relates to improvements in erasers for erasing pencil marks, ink or the like. or both. the object of the invention being to provide an improved eraser of this kind embodying a rubber core and a wooden sheathing which serves to cover all of the rubber core excepting the ends and which protects the rubber core and prevents the same from becoming soiled, the said sheathing comprising a series of sections which may be readily split off one at a time from the rubber core as the eraser is used and becomes worn, and which sheathing sections are arranged end to end and in contact with one another.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is partly an elevation and partly; a sectional view of an eraser constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
My improved eraser comprises a core 1 which is in the form of a strip or bar of rubber and which may be of any suitable manufacture and adapted for use for erasing pencil marks or ink marks, or for both of such uses, as here shown, the end 2 of the rubber core being for erasing pencil marks and the end 3 thereof for erasing ink marks.
I also provide a sheathing 4 for the rubber core and through which the latterextends, the sheathing being made of suitable wood, such as cedar, and comprising a series of sections 5, which sections are arranged end to end and are in mutual contact. The sheathing is secured on the rubber core by glue or the like and each section is narrowed toward each end so that each side or wall of each section of the sheathing is thickened at the center and reduced in thickness toward the ends as at 6. The wooden sheathing stifi'ens the rubber, facilitatcs the use of the device as an eraser, and exposes the ends of the rubber core while covering and protecting the intermediate portion thereof and preventing the same from becoming soiled or covered with or accumulating dirt.
From time to time as the rubber wears from use, a section of the sheathing, nearest the worn end of the rubber, may be split ed to expose an additional portion of the rubber core for use.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim Y '1 An eraser comprising a rubber core and a sheathing through which the core extends from end toend, the said sheathing covering the core excepting at the ends and comprising a series of sections, the said sections of the sheathing being arranged end to end and being separately ramovable from the core.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
HENRY MILTON newcomer.
