IJOCK STRUCTURE.
Application filed august 15, 192 -Seria1 1 Toi 5 81 ,968.
To all whom may concern;
Be it known thatI, JOHN B. FREYs NcnR',
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock Structures; and I do hereby .declarethe fol lowing to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, suchas will; enable others skilled in the art toiwhich' it appertains to make and use the samelf This invention relates to improvements in lockstructures, and more particularly to s-encasing means for a cylinder lock, 'one;obj ect of the invention being to provide avshell construction which may be readily adapted to doors of differentthickness. anchwhich shall be provided with a simple and eflicient ring construction at oneend to seat against recessed seat for the outer end portion of the casing of a cylinder lock located withinsaid shell.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims. a
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a View in elevation of a shell structure embodying my improvements.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing a cylinder lock (in elevation) within the shell,
Figure 3 is an end view of the structure shown in Figure 2, and
Figure 4: is a sectional view showing a modification. v k
In the drawings, my improved lock enclosing shell is represented at 1, and a cylinder lock contained within the shell, is indie cated at 2. The shell 1 is intended to pass through a bore in a door to enclose the cylinder and the latter may be secured to the plate of a rim latch casing secured tothe inner side of the door in any suitable manner, while the connectingbar 3 will be caused to cooperate with the latch mechanism in manner well understood.
If desired, the enclosing shell may be made of hardened metal sothat it will provide an eflicient armor for the cylinder look.
In order that the shell may ,be made adaptable for use in doors ofdifi'erent .thick- 1 ness, said shell is made adjustable by the provision (or a plurality of sections 4,one or more of which'may be removed to afford adjustment in thelength of the shell.
To form theremovable shell sections, said shell is provided with anplurali'ty of series of elongated slots 5,"between adjacent ends of some of which, perforations 6 are made,
andilthemetal of the shell is grooved as at i i 7 between adjacent ends of some of the slots and between the perforations 6 and the ad jacent slot ends. In this manner, the inner portionsyof, the shell are so weakened that the normally'integral ring sections are so formed that one or more of them may be broken off'to adjust the length of theshell to accommodate said shell to the thickness of the'door to which it is tobe applied.
The outer end of the shell is provided with a headjforming a facing ring 8. In the outer face of a door and also aflorda' prises an annular flange 9 projecting laterally from the end of the shell; a beveled portion 10 (which may be slightly curved transversely if desired) projecting from, the
flange 9 and beyond the end of the shell, and
j a circular flange 11 which projects inwardly to vthe annular flange 9 and receives the head 12 of the cylinder lock 2,-the latter having a seatjon theiinner portion of the flange 9.
' In this manner, the end of the shellis made with a facing ring which affords a recessed seat'for the head of the cylinder lock 2.
In, the embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 4c, the outer end of the shell is provided with a circumferential flange 13 forming an annular head on the shell and the'inner face of the flange or head is recessed'as at 14. A facing ring15 to engage the outer face of the door encircles the head or flange 13 and is formed with an inwardly projecting flange 16 seated in the recess 14:,
and preferably permanently secured to the facing ringby brazing, welding or soldermg or in any other suitable manner. The
inner edge portion offithe facing ring 15 i which projects beyondfthe head of the shell is made with an annular flange 17 ,the inner edge [of'which may engage the head of the shell in such position that a portion of said head shall form a seat'18 for the hea of the cylinder lock structure 2. I
It will be seen that with my improvethe casing of a rim latch, both the lock and the enclosing shell will be firmly secured to 1 elongated slots and perforations, said shell a fixed part of the shell providing a recessed seat for the head of the cylinder lock structure and that when the latter is secured to the door.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention Without departing from the spirit of the latter or limiting its scope, and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details .ings, forming a normally integral removable shell section. v
3. A shell for a cylinderlock provided with a plurality of series of openings, each series of openings including structure,
having grooves between the openings of each series, the plurality of series of openings and grooves forming normally integral removable shell sections.
i 4:- A shell for a cylinder lock structure, said shell, provided at its outer end with an annular flange, a facing ring rigid with and projecting forwardly from said flange, said facing ring having an inwardly projecting part cooperating with the flanged end of the shell to provide a recessed seat for the head of a cylinder lock structure.
5. A shell for a cylinder lock structure, saids'hell provided at its outer end with a head, a facing ring having a flange engaging the'periphe'ral portion of said head, said ring projecting beyond the head of the shell and having an annular flange concentric with the axis of the shell and cooperating with the head of the shell toform a recessed seat for the head of the cylinder lock structure.
Intestiinon'y' whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I V g p g v JOHN B. ,FREYSINGER. Witnesses V 'f CHARLES A. BERRY,
