This invention relates to twin-platen typewriting machines, and more particularly to the marginal stop mechanism. Heretotore, such machines have been provided with 'a single set of marginal stops, and it has heen customary to reset the stops every time that the carriage was moved to lering either ot the platens to the printing field.
In this invention marginal stops are provided to limit the travel oi the carri-age for each platen, or for each weh. Means are also provided whereby the carriage may he moved to receive typing on either one ot the webs without necessitating resetting ot the marginal stops.
In the Underwood machine, it has been customary 'to provide 'at the left-hand side of the machine a marginal stop which controls the right-hand margin oi' the worlrsheet. This stop operates a carriage-alarm, and locks the keys, means beingl provided tor releasing the lreys if desired. In this invention, the same Yadvantages are secured tor both platens upon the one carriage.
To enable the carriage to he positioned to receive typing upon either weh without necessitating the disturbing of the marginal stops, there is provided a special stop, which is carried by the lett-hand marginal stop ot the right-hand platen. l2li/'hen it is desired to move the carriage from right to lett to present the right-hand. weh to the printing point; said special stop is swung awa); trom an interfering lug on the carriage, and the carriage is treed to move along its rails, in hoth directions. The special stop is carried loy` the left-hand marginal stop, and may he set therewith in the regular manner. Said special stop is held in its normal or operating position by means of a spring; and, in order to. clear the lug on the carriage, the special stop is swung to its ineil'ective position. u
Although this invention is illustrated as applied to an Underwood fan-:told typewriting machine, it `will he understood that the samel may' be used in connection with a variety ot machines.

This invention is preferably applied to an Underwood twin fan-told typewriting machine, such as illustrated in the Messenger Patent 1,363,197, dated December 2l, 19Q0; 'lout it should be understood that the same may he used in connection with many other types of machines. In said machine, there is provided a pair of pl'atens 10 and ll, which are revoluhly mounted on end plates 12 of individual platen-trames, both platentrames being displaceahly mounted on a car'- riage 13. The carriage-is slidahly mounted on rails 1li :tast to a trame '15, and the letter-space travel of the carriage is controlledhy means of a spring-drum' 16, operatively connected to the carriage hy means of a tape 1T and an escapement mechanism 18, which is operatively connected to the carriage hy means of a rack 19 and a pinion Q0. The platens 10 and 11 are operatively connected to individual line-spacing mechanisms, not shown, by means of gears 22 tast to platen- 1axles Q3, engaging with pinions 21, which, in turn, mesh with gears 24 tast on the inner ends of shafts the latter carrying at their outer ends linger-wheels 26.
ln this invention there are provided two sets ot marginal stops, one foreach platen, and each set comprises one right-hand and one lett-hand.l marginal stop. The righthand marginal stops in the Underwood machine include lolocli's 27, slidahly mounted on a shaft 2S tast to the trame 15 and may he locked in place hy means ot pawls 29 enga'- ing with a rack 30. In order to move said marginal stops, the operator releases the pawls 29 hy means ot finger-pieces 31, therel hy freeing the pawls from the rack and enahling the sliding of the stops.
The lett-hand stop, however, has to he considerably modified in order 'that the car-` riage may he passed over it without disturbing its position. In operation, the carliltl riage travels towards the left-hand stop by letter-syncing. the same `until .a cont-rolling' member or lug' 32, which forms an integral part of .the carriage, Iengages `an inclined portion 33 of-a caineplate 34 and cams the Cani-plate downwardly, thereby ringing; a bell. by means of a bell-cranlr'iand other mechanism, such as disclosed in the patent to lohn McLaughlin, No. 958,818, dated'lvlay 24, 19H). By further letter-spacing the carriage. the lugj'l?. engages with a. higher portion Sti'of said cam-plate, thereby swinging' the `bell-crai'ik forwardly, -so that a pin 37 will engage with an arm 38 fast to shaft =-3-,-which carries' fast thereto a. bailpiece: 40, thereby locking the; typo-keys 4l,

By the' left-hand marginal stop the carriage is completely loclted after typing' a predetermined number of letter-spaces after the 'bell rings, andthere is no way ofinoving the carriage further unless the stop is reset. In this invention, there is provided a special stop 46 made out of a separate piece, which is rockably mounted'on the shaft 28. Said stop 46 is held in its normal position. as shown inf Figure 3,by means of a spring' 47 coiledaround the shaft 28. v`When it is desired to `move the carriage" past a tooth- 48 at the endl of the special stop, the stop is` swung upwardly by means of a fingerpiece 49, thereby clearing* the lug 32 on the carriage. In order that the special stop may be held in place, there is provided a plate 50 fast to a block 51 by means of screws 52. Said plate extending downwardly at 53 and hooking over said stop 46 holds the same in rlplace.

The combination in a typewritine,l mallt) adjustable stop-devices for limiting the travel of said carriage Within the range of the platens, said stop-devices having a pair ofright and left hand marginal stops for each platen, means for operatively connecting the left-hand marginal stops of both platens to a carriage-alarm a predetermined number of letter-spaces befo-re the end of the line, and means for locking the typewriter-keys a predetermined number of letter-spaces after operation of the carriagealarm.

The combination in a. typeWriting machine of a twin platen, a carriage therefor, adjustable stop-devices for limiting the travel of said carriage Within the range of the platens, said stop-devices having a pair of right and left hand marginal stops for each platen, means for operatively connecting the left-hand marginal stops of both platens to a carriage-alarm a predetermined number of letter-spaces before the end of the line, means for locking the typewriter-keys a predetermined number of letter-spaces after operation of the carriage-alarm, and means for releasing said locking means, to permit the carriage to travel a predetermined number of letter-spaces.

The combination in a typevvriting machine of a tvvin platen, a carriage therefor, adjustable stop-devices for limiting the travel of said carriage Within the range of the platens, said stop-devices having a pair of right and left hand marginal stops for each platen, means for operatively connecting the left-hand marginal `stops of both platens to a carriage-alarm a predetermined number of letter-Spaces before the end of the line, means for locking the typewriter-keys a predetermined number of letter-spaces after operation of the carriage-alarm, means for releasing said locking means, to permit the carriage to travel a predetermined number of letter-spaces, and means to permit the movement of the carriage to bring either of the two platens to the printing field.
8. The combination in a typevvriting machine of a twin platen, a carriage therefor, adjustable stop-devices for limiting the travel of said carriage Within the range of the platens, said stop-devices having a pair of right and left hand marginal stops for each platen, and means on the left-hand marginal stop of the left-hand platen to permit the free movement of the carriage to bring either platen to the printing field.

The combination in a typevvriting machine of a platen, a carriage therefor, and means for controlling the travel of said carriage Within predetermined portions of said platen, said means having pairs of adjustably mounted marginal stops effective to check the travel of the carriage in either letter-space or return direction.

The combination in a typevvriting machine of a twin platen, a carriage therefor, means for controlling the travel of the carriage Within the range of the platens, said means having right and lefthand marginal stops and a 'lug on said carriage co-operating with said stops to check the movement of the carriage in either letter-space or return direction, and means for freeing the carriage from the marginal stops to permit the shifting of the carriage to present either platen to the printing field.
