GARTER AND METHOD OF MAKING THE SAME.
Application filed August 4, 1922. Serial No. 579,643.
This invention relates to. a class of articles for wear by persons.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a garter for supporting stockings on the legs of the wearer against tendency to accidentally lower, and which is of a type wherein is provided'a flexible strap or strip having on one of its ends an integral pad of a substantially pentagon or triangular shape formed by folding parts of one end of the strap in overlapping arrangement whereby a clasp for detachably fastening the garter to a stocking may be mounted on the pad... The provision of the pad in this manner serves to greatly lessen the cost of manufacturingthe garter by overcoming the requirement of making separate clasp-pads and attaching them to the is incident to present methgarter straps as ods. 7.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fastener which is adjustably movable on the second end of the strap so that the adjustable loop commonly used in garters on the second ends of their straps for varying the circumference of the garters may be dispensed with.
A further object of the invention is to provide a garter of a simple and efiicient form which may be made of appropriate material in various sizes.
With these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more fully explained with reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a fragmentary view showing a persons leg with a stocking supported by one form of my improved garter.
Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly broken away, of the garter, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view taken on the line'3--3 of Fig. 2.
The garter has a strap or strip member 10 which may be of elastic or non-elastic webbing, or of leather or other appropriate flexible material of a suitable width and of a length adapted to be applied in encircling fashion on the leg, as A, of a person when the garter is used for detachably supporting a stocking, as B.
On one end of the strap 10 is a pad memher, as 11, which is substantially the shape of a pentagon, or may be approximately triangular, and this pad is integrally formed on the strap by folding parts of one end portion, as 12, of the strap upwardly on a relative incline, as at 13, so that the folded part overlaps one face of the strap. The folded part 13 is then folded downwardly, as at 14., on a relative incline crosswise so that it overlaps the other face of the strap, and the free end part, as 15, of the strapis folded over the end portion 12 as well as being disposed between the overlapping portion/13 and the portion 12 of the strap. These overlapping folds of the pad member may be stitched together, as at 16, and on the central part of one face of the pad is a loop, as 17,. with a depending short strip, as 18. The loop17 may be of metal and the strip 18 may be of cloth, and on these parts is provided a clasp, as 19, of a form commonly used in conjunction with garters, composed of a metal loop, as 20, which is held to the strip 18 so that its lower end is" disposed toward the lower end of the strip. On the strip 18 is also a button or knob 21 which, when'the garter is detachably fastened to a stocking, is disposed under the upper edge of the stocking with the loop 20 being eXteriorly of the stocking. By forcing the button 21 with part of the stocking lying thereon through the loop 20 and then moving the loop 20 upwardly the button and stocking will be removably clamped as is incident with the well known functioning of this type of clasp.
The part of the strap 10 other than the pad member 11 is adapted to be arranged in encircling fashion on the leg of the wearer of the garter following attaching the clasp 19, as explained, to the stocking, and on the second end portion of the strap is a fastener, as 22, which is adjustably movable for reducing and enlarging the circumference of the strap when surrounding the leg of the wearer. The fastener 22 is preferably of a form having a plate 23 with two apertured lugs or eyes 24, 25 protruding from an end above one of its faces, and these eyes are spaced apart so that the strap 10 is disposed therebetween. In the eyes 24, 25, are rotatably held the lugs or pins of a well known form of clamp lever 27 having a downwardly inclined portion with a toothed edge, as 28, normally in removable engageljingerpiecei29 is swung upwardly "from the .astrap 1I0the toothed; portion 28 will be diseni; gaged -from' lthe strap which in turn will 7 release Zthe clamp for being adjustably posi- Illtioned on thesstrapttoward and from thepad memherill to lengthen or shorten the space Tbe'tween the dastener andthe pad member. piOnthe'loop 17 is provided a button or knob,
.as7l30, and the platef23 has opposite to its eyesfl i and f25 an extension, as {31, .in the "freeendgpart of whieh is a hole or opening 'Bilioflatsizeiadapte'd toifit removably over and upon Itheibutton'SO so thatwhen the strap member .isearranged around the leg of .lithe wearer it willibeidetachalily fastened to Ehut-ton; The.
l arter will [thereby be removahivlheld.on t ".leg of the-wearer, and
:lthe provision. oflthis form of the fastener I2211enables ldispensing with thense of the .adiustingloop provided on it-he ends of the Istrip smeniherilowfivor'dinary typesflof garters 'of thisiclass.
IIn .theitoregoingl description, 'I have -em-- 'Qbodied -the preierredlffonnof. my. invention, ibutiI do not .wish to be understood as limitinghmyselfithereto aslfam awarelthat modifieztt'ionemaybemade. therein without departing lt'romthe principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore, I reserve to myself the right to make suchschanges as fairly fall within the scope thereof.
'Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
and providing means on the .pad for supporting a clasp.
.2. In a gartenthe combination of a flexible strip, apad member integral with one end of the strip, including one end portion of the strip overlapping one face thereof on an upward relative incline, a second portion ofithestrip overlappingthe'folded part on a relativedownward incline crosswise of its opposite face, and theadjacent free end part oft-he strip disposedbetweenthe overlapping portions, .said overlapping portions having their 'edgesistitched' together, and means onthe pad member for'supporting a clasp.
