UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS W. F. SMITTEN, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN REVOLVING SPICE-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,122, dated January 26,1875; applicatio1 filed December 3, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. F. SMITIEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Caster, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of two or more upright cases,witl1 perforated tops for pepper and other condiments, pivoted on the vertical spindle of a stand, to swing horizontally around it, with as many imperforated covers as there are cases, less one, so contrived that the one case to be used being shifted to the place where it is uncovered, the others will, by the same operation, be brought under cover, so that the holes will be closed in all except the one to be used, and their contents will be prevented from discharging when using the uncovered one.
A spring is employed to press the cases against the covers, to keep them in close contact, and prevent the cases from turning away from the covers too readily; also to take up any slack that may be caused by wear.
In this example I have only represented two cases and one stationary cover; but I propose to use three cases and two covers, or more, as I may wish.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved caster. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig.
3 is a partial side elevation, showing a modification in the construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A is the vertical spindle of a stand, B, whereon the two cases 0 D are pivoted, so as to revolve horizontally. E is the stationary cover, which may be supported by the coil F, forming a spring, or by an arm, G. H is a coiled spring on the stand below the cases, to press them up snugly against the cover. This spring may be dispensed with when the coil F is used, and the arm Gr may have suflicient spring to answer the purpose without the spring H.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, on a vertical spindle, A, of two or more upright horizontally-revolvin g cases, O D, and a stationary cover, E, with or without a spring, substantially as specified.
THOMAS W. F. SMITTEN.
