RENEWABLE FUSE.

This invention relates to improvements in renewable fuses.
It is an object of the invention to pro vide a fuse consisting of a block of insulating n'iaterial having a recess formed therein, in which the fusible element is adapted to be disposed and to provide a protectivesleeve about the block which protects the fusible element, but which is removable so that the fusible element may be replaced or renewed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will be made manifest in the following detailed description and pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for an illustrative embodiment of the invention wherein Figure l is a perspective view of the improved fuse;

Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout, the fuse preferably consists of a cylindrical body 10 formed of insulating material. A longitudinal recess 11 is formed in the body 10 and small recesses 12 and 13 may be also provided therein adapted to receive terminals provided upon the end caps. End caps 14: and 15 are secured to the ends of the bod v 10, the end cap 14 being provided with a flange 16 which is disposed about the block of insulating material 10 so as to form an abutment for the sleeve 17. The end cap 14 may be provided with a blade 18 and is secured in position by screws 19 or the like. A terminal 20 is carried by the end cap l i: and is preferably formed integral therewith. This terminal 20 is receivable in the recess 12 formed in the block of insulating material 10 and is adapted to have a screw 21 passed therethrough.
The end cap 15 is similar in construction to the end cap 14, being provided with a terminal receivable in the recess 13 and with a blade The end cap 15 is secured in position by screws 2st and 25. The flange 26 upon the end cap 15 is smaller in diameter than the flange 16 upon the end cap 14:. The flange 26 is receivable in the recess 27 formed upon the body 10, so that the exterior surface of the body 10 is flush with the exterior surface of the block of insulating material.
A fusible element 28 is adapted to be sup ported upon the terminals 20 and 22 and to be secured in position by means of screws 29. The sleeve 17 is maintained about the body 10 by means of a removable screw 80.
The advantages of the improved fuse are as follows: When it is desired to replace the fusible element 28, such as in the case of its having become burned, the screw 30 is removed and the sleeve 17 may then be caused to slide longitudinally with respect to the body 10 over the end cap 15 which is provided with the smaller flange. By thus removing the sleeve 17, access is provided to the recess 11 and the screws 29 may be removed and the fusible element may be replaced.
It is seen that an improved fuse is provided which permits the fusible elementto be replaced without removal of the end caps of the fuse, and by this construction it is possible to replace the destroyed fusible element without having to throw. away the body of the fuse.
It will be understood that various changes in the detail of construction may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim 1. A fuse comprising a block of insulating material, a recess formed in said block, end caps for said block secured to the ends there of, terminals carried by said end caps extending into said recess, a fusible element supported between said terminals, one of said end caps being provided with a flange disposed about said block so as to form an abutment, the other of said ends caps being provided with a flange imbedded in said block so as to be flush with the exterior surface thereof, and a sleeve disposed about said block and abutting said abutment, said sleeve being adapted to slide over the last mentioned end cap to permit replacement of said fusible element.
