Be it known that I, FMNK L. COOLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refillable Cartridge-Fuses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexactdescription of the invention,such as Wlll enable. others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters ofreference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
lhe present invention has reference, generally, to improvements in cartridge fuses; and the inventionrelates, more particularly, to. a novel construction of refillable cartridge fuse of the type disclosed in my .prior application forLet'ters-Patent bearing Serial No. 270,113, filed J anuary 8, 1919, and of which the present application is a division.
The present invention has for its principal object" to provide a novel construction of refillable cartridge fuse having novel removable end ferrules combined with knife blade contact members arranged with means for securing the end ferrules in closing and sealing relation to the chamber of the containing cartridge and the knife blade contacts in desired electrical engagement with the inclosed fuse element. 7
Other objects of the present invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed'description of the same.
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the same consists, primarily, in the novel construction of refillable cartridge fuse hereinafter set forth, andthe invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the variend view of the same; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same taken on line 4-4 in said Fig. 2, said view being drawn on an enlarged scale; Fig. 5 is another detail longitudinal vertical section of one end of the same, taken on line 5-5 in said Fig. 4; F ig. 6 is an end view of the cartridge fuse, with the ferrule and knife contact removed therefrom; and Fig. 7 is a detail side elevation of one end of the cartridge casing showing the ferrule thereon broken away to disclose the mortised seat provided for the cross-nut of the ferrule and knife blade contact fastening devices.

Referring now to said drawings, the reference character 1 indicates atubular casing, made of some suitable insulating or nonconducting material, which provides an interior fuse chamber 2.

Dovetailed into said respective mortised seats 3 are the ends of atransversely disposed cross nut or anchor bridge 5, which is shaped'in cross-section to correspond to the shape of said mortised seats, and which is held, by engagement in said seats, against outward displacement or withdrawal from the open ends of the said casing 1.1

Said fuse link, when properly assembled, passes longitudinally and diagonally through the fuse chamber 2, with its end terminals 8 extending" over the cross nuts or anchor bridges '5, one terminal passing over the upper side of one cross nut or anchor bridge, andthe opposite terminal-passing under the lower side of the opposite cross nut or anchor bridge, thus assuring the diagonal disposition of the main body of the fuse link within the fuse chamber, so

purpose of so engaging the open ends of the casing 1 as to securely seal the latter against the escape of flame therefrom when'the fuse link blows. To this end each ferrule is provided in its end wall with an inwardly depressed and tapered concentric boss 11, the periphery 12 of which is carried into engagement with the marginal edge 18 of the opening of the casing ends in a sealing relation thereto in much the same way as a cork or stopper is engaged in the neck of a bottle. The transverse wall of each ferrule boss 11 is provided with a slot opening it upon either side of which are provided fastening screw openings 15. The cross nuts or anchor bridges 5 are provided with a pair of spaced internally threaded openings 16, one on either side of the position of the fuse link terminals 8, and with which the screw openings 15 of the ferrules are alined, when the latter are engaged over the casing ends.
The reference-character 17 indicates a metallic knife-blade contact element having at its inner end laterally and oppositely projecting foot pieces 18 provided with perforations adapted to be alined with the openings 15 of the ferrules and openings 16 of said cross nuts or anchor bridges 5 so that fastening screws may be passed through all the openings thus alined. Before assembling the ferrules the free ends of the knife-blade contact elements 17 are respectively passed outwardly through the slot opening 1% until the foot pieces 18 are engaged against the inner sides of the transverse walls of the ferrule bosses 11. The ferrules are then slipped over the ends of the casing until the exposed surfaces of the foot pieces 18 are electrically engaged against the end terminals 8 of the fuse link. Fastening screws 19 are then passed through the ferrules and foot pieces 18 to screw into the threaded receiving openings 16 of the cross nuts or anchor bridges 5, whereby the ferrules bind said foot pieces a. "nst the end terminals 8 of the fuse link, and at the same time forcing the periphery 12 of the ferrule bosses 11 into sealing relation to'the open ends of the cars ing 1, the outer surface of said cross nuts or anchor bridges 5 being depressed as at 20 to assure an unobstructed close fit thereof in the said ends. It will be noticed from the above description that the knife blade contact elements are detachable from the ferrules, by withdrawing the blade thereof through the slot openings 1%. This construction is of marked advantage since it enables the removal of said contact elements, so that any corrosion or other defilement of the bottom of the foot pieces 18 may be removed by emery cloth or the like, whereby the contacting surfaces thereof, adapted to electrically engage the fuse link terminals 8, may be thoroughly cleaned and brightened in a manner adapted to insure a perfect electrical contact with the end terminals of said fuse link when the parts are reassembled.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the several arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of my present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the appended claims. Hence, I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts as described in said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. A refillable cartridge fuse comprising a tubular casing, transverse cross nuts fixed within the open ends of said casing, a fuse link having end terminals engaged over said cross nuts, removable ferrules slidable over the ends of said casing, said ferrules having diametrically disposed slots in their end walls, detachable knife-blade contact ele ments having oppositely and laterally directed foot-pieces at their inner ends, said knife-blade contact elements being adapted to be passed outwardly through said slots, and fastening means adapted to pass through said end walls of said ferrules and through said foot-pieces of said knife-blade contact elements to engage said cross nuts to clamp said foot-pieces in electrical contact with the end terminals of said fuse link.
2. A refillable cartridge fuse comprising a tubular casing, transverse cross nuts fixed within the open ends of said casing, a fuse link having end terminals engaged over said cross nuts, removable ferrules slidable over the ends of said casing, the end walls of said ferrules having inwardly depressed bosses the peripheries of which are adapted to be pressed into sealing relation to the open ends of said casing, the transverse walls of said bosses having diametrically disposed slots therein. detachable knife-blade contact elements having oppositely and laterally directed foot-pieces at their inner ends, said elements being adapted to be passed outwardly through said slots, and fastening screws adapted to be passed through said transverse walls and through said footpieces to screw into said cross nuts whereby said bosses are drawn to said sealing relation to the ends of said casing, and said transverse walls of said bosses depressed to force said foot pieces into electrical contact with said fuse link endterminals.
8. A refillable cartridge fuse comprising a tubular casing, transverse cross nuts having their ends mortised into the walls of their end walls, detachable knife blade contact elements having oppositely and laterally directed footpieces attheir inner ends, said knife blade contact elements being adapted to be passed outwardly through said slots; and fastening means adapted to pass through said end walls of said ferrules and through said foot pieces to engage I said cross nuts to clamp said foot pieces in electrical contact with said end terminals of said link. i i
4. A refillable cartridge fuse comprising a tubular casing, transverse cross nuts having their ends mortised into the walls of said casing atthe extremities of the latter to hold the same against outward withdrawal from said casing extremities, a fuse 7 link having end terminals engaged over said cross nuts to stretch said link longitudinally and diagonally through the interior of said casing, removable ferrules slidable over the ends of said casing, the end walls of said ferrules having inwardly depressed bosses the peripheries of which are adapted to be pressed into sealing relation to the open ends of said casing, the transverse walls of said bosses having diametrically disposed slots therein, detachable knife blade contact elements having oppositely and laterally directed foot pieces at their inner ends, said elements'being adapted to be passed outwardly through said slots, and fastening screws adapted to be passed through said transverse walls and through said foot pieces to screw into said cross nuts on either side of said link terminals whereby said bosses are drawn to said sealing relation to the ends of said casing, and said trans verse walls of said bosses depressed to force said foot pieces into electrical contact with said link terminals.
