WORKMANS TIME RECORDER.
Application filed August 30, 1922, Serial No. 585,214, and in Switzerland September 5, 1931.
The present invention refers to improve ments in workmens time recorders, for instance of the type disclosed in my U. S. Patent No. 1,487,391, dated March 18, 1924.
In registering apparatus provided with type wheels adapted to be operated by a time operating device such as are used for checking workmens time, it is known to provide means which prevent the type wheels from being fed forward when stamping is taking place such forward feeding being subsequently effected automatically. In order that such forward feeding shall likewise not take place when stamping is repeated a number of times, and the time indicated by the type wheels for these stampings consequently remain the same, it hasbeen proposed to provide an auxiliary going train, which, when the handle which serves to bring about the stamping is operated, is brought into action, and then prerents the stamping mechanism from being fed forward for the'duration of a previously determined limited time. Such an auxiliary going train necessitates a large number of elements and is comparatively rapidly worn out. as it is always started afresh even when the operations of the hand lever follow each other directly.
To overcome these disadvantages is the object of the present invention, which re lates to a registering apparatus with type wheels adapted to be operated by a time operating device, and according to which a locking device for the wheels can be thrown into and out of operation by a device adapted to be actuated by hand, and this locking device be allowed to remain in action for a longer or shorter period of time as may be required to prevent the shifting of the type wheels while duplicate or triplicate impressions may be made, for example one for the workman, and one for the oiiice, and, if desired, one for the shop foreman, so that all records shall be identical.
It is therefore possible either to allow the locking device to remain in action for only the length of time required to make one stamping or for the length of time requiredto effect a number of stampings in succession.
One constructional form of the subject n'iatter of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing by way of example, only those parts of the registering apparatus which are necessary to the comprehension of the invention being in general shown.
Fig. 1 shows the apparatus in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a partial vertical section thereof. while Fig. 3 shows certain parts in a different position compared with Fig. 1.
In the example shown in Figs. 1 to 3, 1 denotes the hand lever which serves to bring about the stampings and on the spindle of which the holder 2, which carries a pawl 3, is mounted. This co-operates with the cam l on the spindle of which the carrier piece is rigidly mounted and which is ordinarily held by the tension spring 6 against an abutment 7. On the carrier piece 5 is mounted the hammer 8, which is connected by a tension spring 9 elastically to the carrier piece 5.
If the hand lever 1 be moved out of the position of rest as shown in Fig. 1 against the action of the spring into the position illustrated in Fig. 3, then the pawl 3 which is moved wit-h it, and which, when this movement of the hand lever takes place, is simultaneously rocked on its own axis by a stationary pin 11, against which it strikes, causes the cam 4 to rotate, and consequently the carrier piece 5, so that the hammer 8 is rocked outwards towards the right (see Fig. 1). After a certain rotary movement of the holder 2 has taken place the pawl 3 is disconnected from the cam 4, after which it is returned, together with the carrier piece 5, by the spring 6, to the original po- .ition, and the hammer 8 strikes against the type wheels .12 under the influence of the spring 6. The hammer 8, when it strikes, presses a checking card (work card) inserted in the hopper 13 into contact with the wheels, in front of which an inked ribbon (not shown) is fed past, and the card has the record of the time given by the wheels (which are in the operative position) stamped upon it in the usual way.
The type wheels, of which three are shown in Fig. 2, are fed forward by a feed or operating mechanism of the well known kind, which is periodically operated by a clockwork movement.
Each type wheel has on its periphery between each two numbers (units of registration) a notch 12 for the reception of an singularly-shaped looking lever 14. The three locking levers 1e are pivotally mount ed on a shaft 15, on which a holder 16 is fixed. This holder is formed by two arms which hold the locking levers l t between them and are connected together by two pins 1'7, 1-8. The locking lovers 1% are elastically connected to the holder 16 by tension springs 19 attached to the pin '17. The pin 18 acts as a stop for the locking levers when these latter are thrown out of operation (see Fig. 1). On the shaft 15 is lined an arm 20 the -free end of which is bent at an angle and with which a finger 21 fixed on the shaft of the hand lever 1 cooperates.
l Vhen the hand lever 1 moves downwards the linger '21 rotates the shaft 15 to the right, the holder 16, which is conjointly rotated, bringing the locking lever into engagement with the type wheels by means of the springs 19, so that they cannot be now fed forward (see hen the hand lever swings back into the original position the locking of the wheels is i-i'iterrupted after it has stamped once, the holder 16 being tilt-ed back into its normal position by its own weight and the shaft 15 rotated while the springs 19 are relieved of stress and the locking lever 14 tripped by the contact pin 18. Any feeding movement which may have been initiated in the meantime by the clockwork movement is taken up in the well known manner by an interposed tension spring, which, after the release of the type wheels, causes the feeding mechanism to resume the feeding.
In order that the locking of the type wheels shall be interrupted as desired only after two or more stampings have been made, the following r cans are provided:
@11 the hand lever 1 is mounted an auxiliary lever 22 with which a bell crank lever likewise mounted on the hand lever can be rocked against the action of a spring 2d. The auxiliary lever 22 catches over the hand lever 1 at the handle end, so that when the hand lever is moved downwards, which is done by placing the hand upon the auxiliary lever 22 and depressing it, this latter is rotated to the lefton the lever 1. At the same time the bell-crank lever 23 is rocked against the action of the spring 24 into the position shown in Fig. In this terminal position of the hand lever the pin 18 of the holder 16 is rocked towards the locking lever 14. If the hand lever 1 is not let no of on its return movement, or if the auxiliary lever'22 be now left in its present position with relation to the hand lever, the
rssaoeo bell-crank lever 28 strikes, on the return of the hand lever, against the abutment 25 which limits the highest position of the hand lever. By this means the stroke of the hand lever is limited in such a way that the locking levers 1d are not tripped by the holder 16 as it tilts back, as its pin 18 cannot yet come into operation. The stamping mechanism therefore remains locked. The limitation of the stroke of the hand lever effected in this manner on the contrary by no means prevents the operation of stamping from being carried out, so that therefore by depressing the hand lever again further stampings can be effected. When the auxiliary lever 22 or the hand lever is released, the spring 24, on its return movement, brings the parts 23, 22 into the position with respect to the hand lever 1, shown in Fig. 1, the hand lever being provided with a contact or stop pin 26 for the auxiliary lever. By this means the hand lever can execute its full return movement, the locking device of the type wheels being then thrown out of operation.
It will thus beseen that I provide in addition to means for locking the printing means during a single descent or operation of the lever 1., a member optionally operatable to enable the type wheels 12 to remain locked for an optional number of impressions. In the structure shown I maintain the wheels optionably locked through an optionally operated lever 22 mounted on the hand lever.
I claim:
1. In :a workmans time recorder; time operated type wheels, locking means: therefor, mechanism to effect printing from said wheels and a lever to actuate said mechanism and the locking means; in com-bination with optionally operated means actuated simultaneously with said lever to maintain the locking means in operative position during a plurality of operations of said lever.
2. In a workmans time recorder; timeoperated type wheels, locking means includlo'ckinp; pawls therefor, mechanism to elf-cot printing from said wheels and a lever to actuate said mechanism and the locking means; in combination with optionally operated means to limit the movement of said lever and thereby prevent the release of said pawls, whereby the printing wheels may remain locked during a plurality of printing operations.
3. in a workmans time recorder, the combination with time-operated type-wheels, locking mechanism for said wheels and operating means to effect printing includan actuating lever controllin said looking means; of a stop carried by said lever and means to optionally position said stop to limit the throw of the lever whereby said locking means remains in looking position.
4. In a Workmans time recorder, the combination with time-operated type wheels, locking means for said Wheels, and operating mechanism to effect printing including 5 a spring-retracted actuating lever and an abutment for the lever; of a bell-crank pivoted on the lever and an auxiliary Ie er ivoted on said actuating lever and engagmg said bell-crank to move it into position to engage said abutment to limit the stroke of the actuating lever.
