TIME-RECORDING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. TOMLIN- SON, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and Stateof New York, have invented a certain new'and useful Time-Recording Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the production of a time recorder which is particularly simple in construction, economical in manufacture, and highly eflicient and durable in use; and it consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of this time recorder. Fig. 2 is a' front elevation thereof, the case being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the mechanism of this time recorder, the case being also shown in section. Fig. 4 is an enlarged side elevation of parts seen in Fig. 3, the case being omitted. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the printing element and contiguous parts. Fig. 6 is a detail view of a portion of the means for shifting the record sheet supporting element and the type carrying element transversely. Fig. 7 is a side elevation illustrating the ribbon mechanism, the contiguous parts of the drum and type wheels belng also shown. Fig. Sis a sectional view, partly in elevation through the printing element, parts being broken away Fig. 9 is a detail view, partly in section, of the means for supporting the drum and effecting the positioning of the drum and type wheels in printing relation. This time recorder comprises, generally, a printing couple including a record sheet supporting element and a printing element, one of said elements being movable toward and from the other to effect the printing operation, the record sheet supporting element being movable for carrying the record sheet longitudinally across the printing line and bringing the spaces assigned to the work men to the printing line, and said elements having relative transverse movement for bringing successively the sub-divisions of each of said spaces to the printing line, means for determining the successive transverse positions of the records, means for moving the record sheet. supporting element to carry the record sheet longitudinally across the printing line, manually operated means for moving one element toward and from the other to effect the printing operation, and means whereby the positioning means must be operated preliminary to the printing operation.
I have here shown my invention as embodied in that type of machines commercially known as dial time recorders, and in the drawings 1 is the case, 2 a suitable clock mechanism located within the case and having its face 3 exposed on the front side of the case, and a is the dial located on the out side of the case and having perforations 5 and numbers 6 associated with such perforations corresponding to the numbers assigned to the workmen whose time is kept or recorded by the machine.
In the illustrated embodiment of my invention the record sheet supporting element is here shown as a drum 7 supporting on its periphery a record sheet 8 which is divided by transverse lines into main divisions or spaces 9 corresponding to the numbers on the dial 4, and by longitudinal lines which sub-divide the spaces 9 in successive transverse spaces 10.
The printing element 11 comprises type wheels 12 and 13 and a carriage therefor, one of the wheels, as the wheel 12 being mounted concentric with a shaft 14: connected to the minute hand shaft 15 of the clock mechanism 2. The motion of the minute wheel 12 is transferred to the hour wheel 13 in any suitable manner unnecessary to describe herein. As here illustrated the type wheels are movable toward and from the periphery of the drum 7 to effect the printing operation, and the drum 7 and type wheels 12 and 13 are shiftable transversely relatively to each other, in opposite directions to determine the transverse positions of the records on the record sheet 8. How ever, but one of such elements may be shiftable if desired. The drum is rotated and shifted axially by suitable manually operated means including a handle 16 movable about the axis of the drum and having a portion movable over the face of the dial 4 to. bring a pin or prong 17 thereon opposite a predetermined hole 5, such handle 16 being also movable about an axis eccentric with the axis of the drum, for carrying the prong 17 into the predetermined hole, and for also shifting the drum axially in one direction. Such axial movement of the drum is transferred to the type wheel carriage in order to shift said wheels in the direction opposite to that in which the drum is shifted, by power-transmitting means to be hereinafter described.
As best seen in Fig. 9, the drum 7 is mounted on a rotatable hollow shaft 18 journaled at its ends in upright standards 19, 20 forming the main part of the frame of the machine, and the manually operated means for rotating said shaft 18 and drum 7 and shifting the drum axially includes in addition'to the lever 16, shafts 21 and 22 extending within the shaft 18 and having their opposing ends spaced apart, and a compression spring 23 interposed between said shafts, the shafts 21 and 22 being slidably keyed to the hollow shaft 18 by means of transversely extending pins 24, 25 extending through longitudinal slots 26 and 27 in the hollow shaft 18 near opposite ends thereof. The shaft 18 therefore transmits the rotary movement of the shaft 22 to the shaft 21. Such spring 23 is strong enough to transmit power applied inv an axial direction on the shaft 22, to the shaft 21 when no resistance is offered to the shifting of the drum 7, and the spring compresses when the transverse shifting of the drum 7 is limited, as here inafter described, and permits the shaft 22 to always move axially the same amount irrespective of the transverse position in which the shaft 21, drum 7 and type wheels 12, 13 are limited.
The inner shafts 21 and 22 are connected by means of a rod 28 arranged coaxially with said. shafts and movable axially with one of said shafts, as the shaft 22, and connected to the other shaft by a lost-motion. Saidv rod 28 serves to return the shaft 21 to its starting position, and is provided with a hook-shaped end 29 for coacting with a shoulder 30 extending into the axial passage 31 in the inner end of said. shaft 21, in which the hoolhshaped end of the rod 28 extends, the shoulder 30 of the shaft 21 being located in the path of the l'ioolc-shaped end 29.
The shafts 21 and 22 and the transversely shiftable elements operated thereby, are returned to their starting positions by a spring 32 encircling the outer shaft 18 and interposed between a fixed abutment 33 on said. shaft 18 and a movable abutment or collar 34 thereon, such movable abutment 34 being keyed to the shaft 22 to slide axially therewith, by the pin 24.
Under some conditions the compression spring 23 might operate to return the parts to their starting positions but under other conditions, as when the drum 7 and printing element 11 have been shifted to their extreme transverse positions, the spring. 23 might not return the parts completely to their starting positions, and therefore the spring 32 is employed to positively return the transversely shiftable parts and their connections to their starting positions. However, the compression spring may be made strong enough to perform the function of the spring 32, and the spring 32 omitted. To take up the shock due to the spring 32 a buffer spring 35, Figs. 9 and 10, is interposed between the rod 28 and the shaft 22, said spring being interposed between a shoulder 36 at the outer end of the passage in the shaft 22 in which said rod extends, and a head 37 on the portion of the rod in such passage.
The shaft 22 is rotated and shifted axially by means of the lever 16, which is here shown as pivoted at 38 to a support as a pointer 39 mounted on the shaft 18, the axis of the pivot 38 extending crosswise of the axis of said shaft 22 and the pointer having a guide opening 40 at its end for the pin 17 of the handle lever 16. The motion of the lever 16 inwardly about its axis 38 is transmitted to the shaft 22 by means of a power-transmitting lever 41 pivoted at 42 between its ends to said lever 16 and at its ends, respectively, at 43 and 44 to the support and the shaft 22. Obviously when the lever 16 is turned so that its pin 17 sweeps over the face of the dial 4, the shaft 18 and drum 7 are rotated, and during the inward movement of the lever 16 about its axis 38, the pin 17 enters one of the holes 5, and the shafts 21 and 22 and also the drum 7 are shifted axially.
As best seen in Figs. 2, 3 and 5 the printing element 11 is carried by supporting levers 45 and 46 extending parallel. to each other, one above the other, said element being mounted on shafts 47 and 14 carried respectively by the supporting levers ll?) and 46, and the printing element in addition to the type wheels 12, 13 also comprises a frame member or carriage 48 mounted on is mounted the hour type wheel 13.

The supporting levers and 46 are U-shaped in general outline, as seen in Fig. 5, and are pivoted at 49 and 50 respectively to standards 51, Figs. 2 and 4, rising from a table 52 supported by the main standards 19, 20 of the main frame. The levers 45, 46 carry the shafts 47 and 14, respectively eccentric to their axes 49, 50 and are movable about their axes for carrying the type wheels 12 and 13 and the ribbon mechanism toward and from the drum 7. Said levers 45 and 46 are connected by a link 53 consisting of two parts connected by a right and left hand screw thread connection 54 adjustable for setting and holding the levers 45 and 46 in parallelism, this link 53 being located on the opposite side of the axes 49 and 50 from that on which the shafts 47 and 14 are located.
' The frame element 48 is provided with elongated bearings 55 and 56, Fig. 8,011 the shafts 47 and 14 respectively, and with an arm 57, Fig. 7, depending from the bearing 56 and formed with a yoke 58, the arms of which carry the ribbon mechanism. The bearing 55 is mounted directly on the shaft 47 and the bearing 56 is mounted on a sleeve 59 on which is also mounted the minute wheel. 12, said sleeve 59 being keyed to a sleeve 60 slidable axially on theshaft 14 and connected to said shaft by a lengthwise feather 61, the sleeve 60 having a grooved collar 62 at one end thereof for receiving a shifting fork. The minute wheel 12 is keyed to the sleeve 59 by a screw 63, and the sleeve 59 is keyed to the sleeve 60 by a screw 64. The depending arm 57 of the frame element 48 carries a stud 65 at its lower end on which The shaft 14 is coupled to the minute hand shaft 15 of the clock movement by a suitable coupling 66 of any desirable construction, to permit the shaft 14 to move vertically out of and into alinement with the minute hand shaft 15 during the printing operation.
The bearing 55 is connected by a coupling 67, Fig. 8, to a collar 68 keyed to the shaft 47 and slidable therealong, said shaft 47 being journaled in the arms of the U-shaped lever 45 and movable about its axis to rock the collar 68 and move a detent 69 carried thereby,Figs. 2, 3 and 5, into and out of engagement with an annular toothed rack 70 carried by the type wheel 12, the detent centering the type wheel during the print ing operation.
The shaft 47 is provided with a rock arm 71 thereon, Fig. 5 having a crank pin 72 with which the means, to be described, for moving the detent 69 toward and from the toothed. rack coacts. The rock shaft 47 is held in its initial position by a coiled spring 73, Figs. 2 and 5.
The yoke arms 58 of the frame element 48 carry ribbon spools 74, Fig. 7, said spools being actuated by pawl-carrying levers 75. Each of said levers is pivoted between its ends coaxially with one of the spools, and one of the arms thereof is movable into engagement with the drum during the movement of the type wheels toward and from the drum and the other arm thereof carries a feeding pawl 76 coacting with a ratchet wheel 77 on each spool 74. The pawls may be shifted into and out of engagement with the ratchet wheels 77 by hand and held in their operative and inoperative positions by spring pressed detents 78. For further de-' scription of this ribbon mechanism, reference is had to my pending application Sr. No. 591,943, filed Nov. 12, 1910.
The type wheels 12 and 13 and the frame element 48 supporting the same, are shiftable transversely of the periphery of the drum 7 and the record sheet 8 thereon in the opposite direction to that in which the drum is shifted, and said type wheels 12 and 13 and frame element 48 are shifted by power-transmitting means interposed between the shifting means for the drum and the collar 62 of the sleeve 60. Said powertransmitting means is here shown as including a lever 79, Figs. 3, 4 and 6 pivoted at 80 between its ends to the main frame standard 19 and having a fork 81 at its lower end which works in an annular groove or collar 82 connected to the drum 7. Said lever 79 is pivoted at 83 at its opposite end to one end of a link 84 which is provided at its other end with a shifting fork 85 extending into the annular groove of the col lar 62.
The position of the records transversely is determined by the relative transverse positions of the drum 7 and printing element 11 and the location of the drum 7 and printing element 11 may be determined by any suitable means. The means here illustrated comprises an annular series of abutments 86, Figs. 2, 3, 4, 15, 16 and 17, each abutment having a series of shoulders for coacting successively with a shifting lever 87 carried by an abutment arm 88 mounted on and movable with the shaft 21, the abutments 86 corresponding in number to the number of spaces 9 on the record sheet or the number of workmen whose time is being recorded by the machine, and the number of shoulders of such abutments corresponding to the number of registrations that can be made transversely of the record sheet 8 by each workman. Said abutments are here shown as slidable in grooves 90 formed in opposing annular supports 91 carried by the main frame standard 19, the grooves being here shown as arranged radially with the axis of the shall; 21, and each abutment being movable outwardly during each cooperation thereof with the shifting lever 87. In operation as the hand lever 16 is turned around the dial 1 to bring a predetermined space 9 to the printing line, the abutment arm 88 and lever 87 are brought into alinement with the corresponding abutment 86, and during the movement of the lever 16 inwardly about its pivot 38, the end of the shifting lever 87 engages one of the steps of the opposing abutment 86, and, during further inward movement of said lever 16 and the shafts 21 and 22, said shifting lever 87 moves on its pivot until said lever 87 engages the end of the abutment arm 88, and moves the abutment 86 outwardly one space to bring the next step into position to coact with the lever 87 do ing the next cooperation of the same abutment 86 and said lever 87'. The abutments are reset inwardly in their start ing position by means of a cam 98, Fig. 16, carried by a ring 9i rotatably mounted on one of the supports 91 and movable into engagement with portions 95 of the abutments extending through slots 96 opening through the bottoms of the grooves 90.
For a full description of the foregoing mechanism for limiting the transverse positioning of the drum 7 and type wheels 12, 13, reference is had to my pending application Sr. No. 450, 169, filed Aug. 27, 1908.
The ring 9 1 is actuated in order to reset the abutments 86 in their normal position by means of a rock arm 97 mounted on the end of the shaft 21 and carrying a shiftable coupling or bolt 98 which is movable by handinto position to engage a shoulder 99 provided on a pivoted arm 100 arranged with. its pivot coaxially with the shaft 21 and engaging a pin 101 on the cam ring 94-. Said coupling is shifted automatically out of operative position after the abutments have been reset. The coupling or bolt 98, as seen in Figs. 17, 18, 19 and 20, consists of a spring pro sed bolt shiftable by hand in an elongated bearing 102 carried at the end of the arm 97, the bolt having a shonl der or pin 1.03 extending outwardly through a lengthwise slot 101 in said bearing, the shoulder 103 being movable into engagement with a shoulder formed by widening a portion of the slot 104-. The shoulder or pin 103 is movable into engagement with said shoulder 105 by a partial turn thereofafter the bolt 98 has been moved axially, such movement axially being against the ac tion of a returning spring 106. The engagement of the pin 103 with the shoulder 105 normally prevents the return of the bolt 98 by the spring 106. lVhen it is desired to reset the abutments 86, the case 1 of the time recorder is opened by one having access to the same, and the bolt 98 shifted by hand into the path of the pin 99. The handle 16 then turned rotating the shaft 21 and moving the arm 97 and bolt 98 and arm 100, a complete revolution causing the cam 93 to depress the abutments 86. The beginning of the rotation of the shaft 21 when actuated to reset the abutments 86 should be commenced when the arm 97 is in an upright position. hen a complete rotation has been made, the bolt 98 is automatically turned to disengage the pin 103 from the shoulder 105 so that said bolt 98 will be returned to its normal position by its spring 106. The turning of the bolt is eli'ected by means of a knock-01f device 107, Figs. 3, 15, 17, 18 and 19, pivoted at 108 to a rod 109 extending betweenv the supports 91; and said knock-01f device 107 is momentarily held by hand out of the path of the head 110 as shown in dotted lines Fig. 18, until the bolt 98 has cleared said device 107, and said device is then returned by a suitable spring to its position shown in Figs. 17 18 and 19 where it engages an eccentric surface or shoulder 111 on said head 110 and rotates the bolt 98 sufficiently to disengage the pin 103 from the shoulder 105.
The manually operated means for moving one element, that is the printing element 11 toward and from the other element or record sheet supporting element 7 comprises a handle located in proximity to the dial 1 in position to be readily grasped by the same hand operating the positioning lever 16, and connections between said handle and the printing element 11. The handle 112 is here shown as annular in form, Fig. 1, and is supported 011 the periphery of the dial 1; and movable around the same, said handle having peripheral finger engaging notches 113. Antifriction members as rollers 11 1 are preferably interposed between opposing surfaces of the dial. and handle 112, these rollers being journaled on studs 115 carried by the dial, and the rollers extending into recesses 116 formed in the dial and opening through the periphery and the rear face tl'iereof. The rollers also extend into grooves 117, Fig. 11 Sheet 1, formed in the inner face of the ring shaped handle 112, so that by reason of the grooves 117, the rollers interlock therein and hold the handle 112 from removal. The end walls of the recesses 117 se we to limit the movementof the handle about its axis. The motion is transmitted from the handle 112 of the printing element by means of a member as a lever 118 pivoted to the frontof the case 1, and an endwisely movable reciprocating part as a link or rod 119, Figs. 2, 3, 12 and 18 having means for coacting with the support for the printing element. The lever 118 is here shown as a bell crank pivoted at its angle 120, one arm of the lever coacting with means on the handle 112, and the other arm thereof being connected to the rod 119. As seen in Fig. 12, the'first named arm of the lever 118 coacts with a lever 121 pivoted between its ends at 122 to the front of the case, one arm of the lever 121 engaging the contiguous arm of the lever 118, and the two arms of the lever'being engaged respectively by shoulders 123 and 124 on the handle 112 and located on opposite sides of said arms so that, as the handle 112 is moved' in one direction, the shoulder 123 will actuate the lever 121 in one direction, and when the handle 112 is moved in the opposite direction the shoulder 124 will actuate the lever 121 in the same direction.
' Thus the motion of the handle 112 is always transmitted in the same direction to the lever 118. However, the lever 118 may be connected to the handle 112 by a pin and slot, as shown in Fig. 2. The bell crank lever 1.18 and parts connected thereto are returned. to their normalpositions by a spring 118, the starting position of the lever being determined by a stop 118*. The lever 118 is connected to the rod 119 by a double ball and socket joint, and as here shown, the lever is provided with a collar 125 encircling the rod and formed with ball sockets 126 and 127 facing in opposite directions and through which the rod extends, and the rod is provided with balls 128 and 129 for coacting with the sockets respectively, one of the balls as the ball 128 being fixed on the rod and the other being slidable thereon and being normally restrained from sliding movement by a spring 130. The spring 130 acts as a cushion and yields when the type wheels 12 and 13 have been brought in contact with the record sheet. This spring also serves as an additional function to be hereinafter referred to.
The rod 119 carries at its upper end shoulders 131 and 132 for coperating respectively with the crank pin 72 of the arm 71 on the rock shaft 47, and with an arm 133 forming an extension of the lever 46, the shoulders 131 and 132 being so spaced apart that the shoulder 131 engages the crank pin 72 and rocks the shaft 47 sufficiently to carry the detent 69 into engagement with the rack 7 0 prior to the engagement of the shoulder 132 with the arm 133. In order to relieve the detent 69 from strain after said detent. 69 engages the rack 70, the
In order to prevent the printing operation by the handle 112 before the elements 7 and 11 have been positioned, the powertransmitting connections between the handle 112 and the printing element 11 are held out of operative position and are shifted into operative position during the operation of the positioning means by the lever 16; and the handle 16 and parts operated there by are held in their position assumed when operated to position the drum 7 and printing element 11, by locking means which are released when the handle 112 is operated. Thus the positioning means must be operated preliminary to the printing operation and the positioning means is held in its set position until the printing operation is completed.
In the illustrated embodiment of my invention the rod 119 is normally arranged with its shoulders 131 and 132 out of position to engage the pin 72 and arm 133 as indicated in full lines, Figs. 3 and 4, so that operation of the handle 112 before the operation of the lever 16 will be ineffective, and said rod 119 is shiftableinto operative position, into the position shown in dotted lines in said figures. The movement of the rod from its position shown in full lines to that shown in dotted lines is effected by an annular flange or collar 137 on the movable abutment 34, as best seen in Fig. 4, the flange 137 engaging said rod 119 during the inward movementof the shaft 22 by the lever 16. During the movement of the rod 119 by the collar 137, the rod pivots about an axis located between the balls 128 and 129 thereon and moves the slidable ball 129 downwardly and also carries the upper ball with the rod upwardly out of their sockets so that the balls occupy the position shown in Fig. 13, this movement of the balls 128 and 129 serving to compress the spring 130, so that said spring will return the rod to its normal position, that is the position shown in full lines in Figs. 3 and 4. The rod is guided during its swinging movement between plates 138 carried by the main frame standard 20.
The locking means for holding the positioning means in its adjusted or set positions comprises a member as a bell crank lever 139 pivoted at 140 to the standard 20, one arm of the lever extending horizontally for coacting with the collar 137 and holding the collar and parts connected thereto from return movement by the spring 32, said lever having a suitable tooth or shoulder 141 which coacts with the collar 137 and which ratchets over the collar during the inward movement of the collar. The locking means also includes the pin or prong 17 for entering the holes 5 of the dial and preventing turning of the drum 7 and shafts 21 and 22 by the weight of the lever 16 and parts connected thereto. The latch lever 139 is spring pressed and engages automatically with the collar 137 and is moved out of operative position by means operated by the handle 112, said means consisting of a shoulder 1 12 carried by the reciprocating rod 119 and coacting with a shoulder 14-3 on the vertically extending arm of the bell crank lever 139, one of the shoulders yielding laterally and being ineffective during the movement of the rod 11.9 in one direction, and being movable into effective engagement with the other shoulder when the rod moves in the reverse direction for tilting the lever 139 on its pivot 110 to release the tooth 111 thereof from the collar 137 and permit the parts to return to their starting positions under the influence of the spring 32. As here shown the shoulder 11-2 is a spring pressed bolt working in a socket 1&1 fixed to the rod 119, and the shoulder 1-13 is provided with. two cam faces 115 and 116 facing in different directions, the cam face 145 being arranged to engage the bolt 1 12 during the downward movement of the rod 119 and force said bolt 14:2 laterally against the action of its spring 147, and the other tin-J1! face 116 being arranged to be engaged by t; bolt 11:? after it has cleared the shoulder 1 13 and has been pressed to its normal position by its spring 1 17. During the return movement of the rod 119, the bolt 1&2 acts on the cam face 146 tilting the bell crank lever 139 and thereby disengaging the head 1 11 of the latch from the collar 137.
Upon the completion of each printing operation a bell 148 is sounded by a hammer 1 19 striking the same, Fig. 2. The hamm'er is pivoted at 150 and carries a pivoted pawl or toe 151 arranged to be engaged by the collar 137 during the axial movement with the shaft 22 inwardly, the toe 151 yielding during the inward movement of the collar and being formed with a cam face arranged to be engaged by the collar during return movement thereof causing the hammer 149 to be elevated so that it will strike, after the collar 137 clears said toe 151. In operation each workman is assigned a number on the dial of the clock which corresponds to the number of a space on the record sheet, and when he enters or leaves the place of employment or begins or finishes a job, he turns the handle 16 until the pin or prong 17 is alin-ed with the hole 5 associated with his number, and presses said handle 16 inwardly about its axis 38 carrying the pin 17 into said hole 5. The inward movement of the handle 16 moves the shafts 21 and 22 and drum 7 inwardly, and carries the arm 88 and abutment shifting lever 87 into engagement with the corresponding abutment 86, and such movement of the handle 16 also moves the lever 79 on its pivot to shift the printing ele ment 11 laterally in the direction opposite to that in which the drum '7 is shifted. The
inward movement of the lever also carries the abutment 3'1 and flange 11.37 thereon inwardly until the flange is engaged by the latch lever 139, the collar 137 during such movement carrying the power-transmitting rod 119 into operative engagement with the printing element. The handle 112 is then operated by the same hand or by the other hand, if desired, thus actuating the lever 118, rod 119 and eliecting the printing oration and also disengaging the collar from the lever 139 after the printing operation has been con'ipleted, whereupon the spring 32 resets the parts in the starting positions, with the exception of the abutments 86 which are reset by hand Wl'lQlIBVOL a new record sheet is placed on the drum.
Claims for certain patenta'ble subjectnn1tter disclosed herein and not claimed, or not claimed generically, are contained in certain of my pending applications, and particularly in my first application liled August 27, 1908, Sr. No. 4150, 169.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In a time recorder, a printing couple including a sup ort fin,- a record receiving element, and an imprint making element, one member of the couple having movement relative to the other for determinii'ig the position of the imprint on the record receiving element, and one member having relative movement toward the other for making the imprint, a manual, non-clock controlled mechanical means actuated by the manual for effecting the first-named relative movement, a second manual, and means operated by the second manual for effecting the second-nan'ied relative movement, the first-named means controlling the operation of the second-named means, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a time recorder, a printin couple including a support for a record receiving element, and an imprint making element, one member of the couple having movement relative to the other for determining the position of the imprint, and one member having relative movement toward the other for making the imprint, a manual, means operated by the manual for effecting the first-named relative movement, a second manual, and means operated by the second manual for effecting the second-named rclative movement, the last-named means being normally out of actuating position, and means associated with the first-named means for moving the second-named means into actuating position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In a time recorder, a printing couple including a support for a record receiving element, and an imprint making element, one member of the couple having move ment relative to the other for determining the position of the imprint and one member having relative movement toward the other for making the imprint, a manual, means operated by the manual for effecting the first-named relative movement, a second manual, means operated by the second manual for effecting the second-named relative movement, the last-named means being normally out of actuating position, and means associated with the first-named means for moving the secondnamed means into actuating position at the end of the positioning movement, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a time recorder, a printing couple including a support for a record receiving element, and an imprint making element, the members of the couple having relative movement in one direction for bringing a desired space on the record receiving element and the imprint making element into registration and having movement in a second direction for bringing a desired section of said space and the imprint making element into registration and in a third direction for bringing the imprint making element and the record receiving element in contact with each other, a handle and associated mechanisms for efiecting the first two relative movements, a second handle and associated mechanisms for effecting the third relative movement, and means for preventing effective operation of said second handle and associated mechanism until after the conpletion of the positioning movements by the first handle and associated mechanisms, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. In a time recorder, a printing couple including a support for a record receiving element, and a type carrying element, the support and the type carrying element having relative movement in one direction for bringing a desired space on the record receiving element into registration with the type carrying element, and having movement in a second direction for bringing a desired section of said space into registration with the type carrying element, and a third direction forbringing the type carrying element into contact with the record receiving element for making an impression thereon, a handle and associated mechanisms for effecting the first tWo relative move ments, a second handle and associated mechanisms for effecting the third relative movement, means for preventing effective operation of said second handle and associated mechanism until after the completion of the positioning movements, and means for preventing the return of said first-named handle and associated mechanism to their initial positions until after the operation of the said second-named handle and associated mechanism, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
(i. In a time recorder, a printing couple including a record sheet supporting element and a type carrying element, one being movable toward and from the other for printing a record, one of said elements being shiftable relatively to the other for determining the position of the record on the record sheet, manually operated means for positioning said elements in predetermined printing relations, manually operated means for moving one element toward and from the other, the latter means being controlled by the positioning means, and locking means for holding the positioning means in its operative position, said locking means being released by the manually operated means for moving one element toward the other, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
7. In a time recorder, a printing couple including a record sheet SIIPIHHYHHQ element and a type carrying element, one being mo v able toward and from, the other for printing a record, one of said elements being shiftable relatively to the other for determining the position of the record on the record sheet, manually operated means for positioning said elements in predetermined printing relations, manually operated means for moving one element toward and from the other, the latter means being controlled by the positioning means, locking means for holding the positioning means in its operative position, and means operated by the second-mentioned means for releasing the locking means after the printing operation, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
8. In a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a record sheet supporting element movable about an axis and a type carrying element, one of said elements being movable toward and from the other to effect the making of a record, and one of said elements being shiftable transversely relatively to the other, the record sheet supporting element being movable about its axis for carrying the record sheet longitudinally across the printing line, positioning means for shifting the laterally shiftable element into predetermined transverse positions and for also moving the record sheet supporting element to position the record sheet longitudinally relatively to the printing line, operating means for moving one element toward and from the other, means for looking the positioning means in its adjusted position, and means controlled in its operation by said operating means for releasing the locking means after the printing operation, substantially as and for the purpose described.
9. In a recording. machine, a printing couple comprising a record sheet supporting element and a type carrying element, one of said elements being movable toward and from the other to effect the making of a record, and one of said elements being shiftable transversely relatively to the other, the record sheet supporting element comprising a drum movable about its axis for carrying the record sheet longitudinally across the printing line, positioning means for shifting the laterally shiftable element into predetermined transverse positions and for also moving the drum about its axis, operating means for moving one element toward and from the other, means for locking the positioning means in its set position, and means controlled in its operation by said operating means for releasing the locking means after the printing operation, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
10. In a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a record sheet supporting element and a type carrying element, one of said elements being movable toward and from the other to effect the making of a record, and one of said elements being shiftable transversely relatively to the other, the record sheet supporting element comprising a drum movable about its axis for carrying the record sheet longitudinally across the printing line, a rotatable shaft arranged coaxially with the drum and connected thereto to rotate the same and being also connected to the laterally shiftable element for shifting the same, manual means connected to the shaft, a collar fixed to the shaftand movable therewith, locking means for holding the manual means in its operative position including a latch coacting with the collar, and manually operated means for moving one element toward and from the other and for tripping the latch after the printing operation, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
11. In a time recorder, a printing couple including elements having relative movement for effecting the making of a record, and also having relative movement for bringing the same into predetermined printing relations, means for effecting the relative movement of said elements to bring the same into predetermined printing relations, manually operated means for effecting the relative movement of said element-s to print a record, the last-mentioned means being controlled in its operation by the first-mentioned means, automatic means for locking said elements in their adjusted printing relation, and means operated by the manual means effecting the printing of a record, for releasing the locking means, and a spring for returning the parts to their starting position, substantially as and for the purpose described.

elements being movable toward and from the other, and one of said elements being shiftable transversely relatively to the other, means for rotating the drum and for effecting the transverse positioning of the elements comprising an endwisely movable rotary shaft arranged coaxially with the drum, a collar movable with the shaft, a hand lever for rotating the shaft and moving the same endwisely to position said elements in printing relation, a latch for coacting with the collar when the shaft has been operated by said lever, manually operated means connected to one of said elements for moving the same toward and from the other to print a record, and means operated by the lastmentioned means for tripping the latch after the printing operation, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
13. In a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a record sheet supporting element and a type carrying elen'ient, one being movable toward and from the other to effect the making of a record, and one being shiftable transverscly relatively to the other for positioning said elements in printing relation, means for positioning said elements in printing relation, a latch coacting with the positioning means for locking the shiftable element in its transverse position, and operating means for moving one of said elements toward and from the other, including a handle and powert1.'ansmitting connections having means for coacting with the latch to release the same after the printing operation, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
14. In a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a record sheet supporting element and a type carrying element, one being movable toward and from the other to effect the making of a record, and one being shiftable transversely relatively to the other for positioning said elements in printing relation, means for 1 ositi0ning said elements in printing relation, a latch coacting with the positioning means and locking the shiftable element in its transverse position, and operating means for moving one of said elements tmvard and from the other incl uding a handle, and power-transmitting connections comprising a reeiprocziting part having a shoulder for engaging the latch and releasing the same when said part has been actuated a predetermined amount, substantially as and for the purpose described.
15. In a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a record sheet supporting element and a type carrying element, one being movable toward and from the other to effect the making of a record, and one being shiftable transversely relatively to the other for positioning said elements in a predetermined printing relation, means for positioning said elements in printing relation, a member formed with a latch eoacting with the positioning means for locking the shiftable element in its transverse position, said member having a shoulder, and operating means for moving one of said elements toward and from the other including a handle,
and power-transmitting connections comprising a reciprocating part formed with a shoulder for coacting with the shoulder on the latch member, one of said coacting shoulders being yieldable laterally during the movement of said part in one direction and movable into position to move said member and trip the latch during the return of said part in the opposite direction, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
16. In a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a record sheet supporting element and a type carrying element, one being movable toward and from the other to effect the making of a record, and one being shiftable transversely relatively to the other for positioning said elements in printing relation, means for positioning said elements in printing relation, a lever pivoted between its ends and one arm thereof serving as a latch for locking the shiftable element in its transverse position and the other arm thereof being formed with a shoulder, and operating means for moving one of said elements toward and from the other including a handle and power-transmitting connections comprising a reciprocating part formed with a shoulder for coacting with the shoulder of said lever, one of the shoulders being spring-pressed and yieldable laterally during the movement of said part in one direction, and the shoulders effectively engaging during the movement of the part in the other direction for actuating said part to trip the latch, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
17. In a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a record sheet supporting element and a type carrying element, one being movable toward and from the other to effect the making of a record, and one being shiftable transversely relatively to the other for positioning said elements in printing relation, means for positioning said elements in printing relation, a lever pivoted between its ends and one arm thereof serving as a latch for locking the shiftable element in its transverse position and the other arm thereof being formed with a shoulder having two cam surfaces facing in different directions, and operating means for moving one of said elements toward and from the other including a handle, and power-transmitting connections comprising a reciprocating part formed with a spring-pressed shoulder coacting with one of said cam surfaces and yielding during the movement of said part in one direction and moving into engagement with the other cam surface and acting on the same to move the lever on its pivot when said part moves in the reverse direction, substantially as and for the purpose described.
18. In a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a record sheet supporting element and a type carrying element, one being movable toward and from the other to effect the making of a record, and the record sheet supporting element comprising a rotatable drum, and one of said elements being shift-able transversely relatively to the other for positioning said elements in a pre determined printing relation, means for rotating the drum and for shifting the transversely shiftable element comprising a shaft arranged coaxially with the'drum and connected thereto for rotating the same, and being also connected to the laterally shiftable element, a collar concentric with the shaft and movable lengthwise of the aXis thereof, a handle connected to the shaft for rotating the same and for also moving the collar axially, a latch for coacting with the collar and locking the same in its shifted position, and operating means for moving one of said elements toward and from the other including a handle, and power-transmitting connections having a shoulder for coacting with the latch and moving the same out of operative position after the printing operation, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
19. In a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a record sheet supporting element and a type carrying element, one of said elements being movable toward and from the other to effect the printing operation, said elements having relative movement for positioning the same in a predetermined printing relation, manually operated means for positioning said elements, manually operated means for moving one element toward and from the other including shiftable power-transmitting connections normally out of operative position, and means operated by the positioning means for shifting said power-transmitting connections into operative position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
20. In a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a record sheet supporting element and a type carrying element, one of said elements being movable toward and from the other to effect the printing operation, the record sheet supporting element comprising a drum rotatable for carrying the record sheet longitudinally across the printing line, and one of said elements being movable transversely relatively to the other into different transverse positions, manually operated means for rotating the drum and shifting the transversely shiftable element comprisin a shaft arranged coaxially with the drum and connected thereto for rotating the same, the shaft being movable axially for shifting the shiftable element, a collar fixed tothe shaft and movable therewith, and a handle for operating said shaft, and manually operated means for moving one of said elements toward and from the other com )risin a handle and s l C a t power-transmittin means normally out of operative position and including a part arranged in the path of said collar and movable thereby during axial movement of the shaft, substantially as and for the purpose 1 described.

In a recording machine, a printing couple comprisin a record sheet supporting element and a type carrying element, one of said elements being movable toward and from the other to elfect the printin operation, the record sheet supporting element comprising a drum rotatable for carrying the record sheet longitudinally across the printing line, and one of said elements being shiftable transversely relatively to the other into different transverse positions, manually operated means for rotating the drum and shifting the transversely shiftable element comprising a shaft arranged coaxial ly with the drum and connected thereto for rotating the same, the shaft being movable axially for shifting the shiftable element, a collar fixed to the shaft and movable therewith, and a handle for operating said shaft, and manually operated means for moving one of said elements toward and from the other comprising a handle, power transmitting connections normally out of operative position and including a part arranged in the path of said collar to be moved thereby during axial movement of the shaft, a latch for engaging the collar after the positioning means has been operated, and means for moving the latch out of operative position after the printing operation, the latch releasing means being ope 'ated by the power-transmitting connections, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
23. In a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a record sheet supporting element and a type carrying element, one of said elements being movable toward and from the other to effect the printing operation, the record sheet supporting element comprising a drum rotatable for carrying the record sheet longitudinally across the printing line, and one of said elements being movable transversely of the other into different transverse positions, a dial having holes corresponding to the longitudinal spaces of the record sheet, manually operated means for rotating the drum and for shifting the transversely shiftable element con'iprising a shaft arranged coaxially with the drum and the dial and being connected to the drum for rotating the same and being movable axially for shifting the shiftable element, a collar fixed to the shaft and movable axially therewith, a handle for operating the shaft having a portion movable over the dial and havin a prong for entering the holes in the dial, manually operated means for moving one of said elements toward and from the other comprising an operating handle movable about the periphery of the dial, and power-transmitting means normally out of operative position and including a part arranged in the path of the collar and movable thereby during the axial movement of the shaft, a latch coacting with the collar for holding the same from movement when the positioning means has been operated, and means operated by the power-transmitting means for releasing the latch, substantially as and for the purpose described.

In a time recorder, a printing couple including a record sheet supporting element and a type carrying element, one being movable toward and from the other for printing a record, operating means comprising a handle, and power-transmitting connections between the handle and the movable element, the connections comprising a movable part normally out of operative position, and means for shifting said part into operative position preliminary to the operation of the handle, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
25. In a time recorder, a printing couple including a record sheet support-ing element and a type carrying element, one being movable toward and from the other for printing a record, operating means comprising a hen dle, and power-transmitting connections between the handle and the movable element, the connections comprising an endwisely movable link coacting with the handle and the movable element and being normally out of operative position, and means for shifting said link into operative position preliminary to the operation of the handle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
26. In a recording machine, a printing couple including a record sheet supporting element and a type carrying element, one being movable toward and from the other for printing a record, and operating means comprising a handle, and power-transmitting connections between the handle and the movable element, said connections comprising an endwisely movable link, a lever connecting the handle and the link, the link coacting with the movable element, and a buffer spring interposed between the lever and the link, substantially as and for the purpose described.
27. In a recording machine, a printing couple including a record sheet supporting element and a type carrying element, one being movable toward and from the other for printing a record, and operating means comprising a handle, and power-transmitting connections between the handle and the movable element, said connections comprising an endwisely movable link, and a lever connected to the handle and the link, the link coacting with the movable element, and the lever being connected to the link by a ball and socket joint, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
28. In a recording machine, a printing couple including a record sheet supporting element and a type carrying element, one being movable toward and from the other for printing a record, and operating means comprising a handle, and power-transmitting connections between the handle and the movable element, said connections comprising an endwisely movable link, a lever connected to the handle and the link, the link coacting with the movable element, the lever being connected to the link by a ball and socket joint, the socket member being fixed to the lever, and the ball being movable endwisely on the link, and a spring for yieldingly pressing the ball into the socket, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
29. In a recording machine, a printing couple including a record sheet supporting element and a type carrying element, one being movable toward and from the other for printing a record, and operating means comprising a handle, and power-transmitting connections betwe :1 the handle and the movable element, said connections comprising a laterally shiftable endwisely movable link, a lever conne ted to the handle and the link, the link coacting with the movable element, the lever being formed with ball sockets facing in opposite directions and the link extending axially through the sockets, and having balls provided thereon and engaging with the sockets respectively, one ball being fixed to the link and the other slidable axially thereof, and aspring for restraining the sliding of the movable ball, substantially as and for the purpose described.
30. In a recording machine, a printing couple including a support for a record receivin g element, and an imprint making element, one member of the couple havingmovement relative to the other for bringing a desired space on the record receiving element and the imprint element into registration, and one member having relative movement toward the other for making an imprint on the record receiving element, a handle movable about an axis and in a second direction, means operated by said handle in the said movements thereof for effecting the firstnamed relative movement of the members of the printing couple, said handle having a finger gripping part adjacent its outer end, an oscillating member having finger engaging parts arranged concentric with said axis and adjacent said fingers gripping part of thehandle, and means operated in the oscillation of said member for effecting said relative movement for making an impression, substantially as and for tie purpose set forth.
31. In a recording machine, a printing couple, a handle movable about an axis and movable in a second direction at an angle to said movement about an axis, mechanism operated by said handle in the said movements thereof for positioning the members of the coupling for printing, a ring shaped member mounted concentric to said axis and having hand-engaging parts adjacent the various positions assumed by said handle in its movement about said axis, and means operated by the movement of said ring-shaped member for effecting printing, substantially as and for the purpose described.
32. In a recording machine, a printing couple including an imprint making element, and a support for a record receiving element, said support and imprint making element having relative movement for positioning the imprint making element in respect to a selected space on the record receiving element and one of said members having movement toward the other for making an imprint, a handle on the front of the machine movable about an axis and having a second movement at an angle to said movement about its axis, means actuated by said handle in the said movements thereof for effecting said positioning movement of the members of the printing couple, a dial associated with said handle, a ring mounted on the dial and having oscillatory movement, and means actuated by said ring for effecting said movement to make an imprint toward and from each other, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
33. In a recording machine, a printing couple including an imprint making element, and a support for a record receiving element, said support and imprint making element having relative movement for positioning the imprint making element in respect to a selected space on the record receiving element, and one of said members having movement toward the other for making an imprint, a handle on the front of the machine movable about an axis and having a second movement at an angle to said movement about its axis, means actuated by said handle in the said movements thereof for effecting said positioning movement of the members of the printing couple, a dial associated with said handle, a ring mounted on the dial and having oscillatory movement, and means actuated by said ring foreffecting said impri nt movement, said means including a vertically movablerod,a bell-crank lever for shifting the same, a pivoted lever having one end cooperating with an arm of the bellrank lever, and abutments on the ring for engaging said lever on opposite sides of its pivot, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
34. In a time recorder, a printing couple including elements having relative movement for effecting the making of a record, one of the elements being movable about an axis for determining the position of the record, means for effecting such movement including a handle movable about an axis, and a fixed dial concentric with the axis of the handle and enacting therewith, and means for effecting relative movement of said elements including a handle movable about an axis of the dial and having its engaging portion located near the dial, substantially as and for the purpose described.
35. In .a time recorder, a printing couple including elements having relative movement for effecting the making of a record, one of the elements being movable about an axis for determining the position of the record, means for effecting such movement including a handle movable about an axis, a fixed dial concentric with the axis of the handle and coacting therewith, and means for effecting relative movement of said elements, the last-mentioned means including a ring shaped handle encircling the periphery of the dial, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
36. In a time recorder, a printing couple including elements having relative movement for effecting the making of a record, one of the elements being movable about an axis for determining the position of the record, means for effecting such movement including a handle movable about an axis, a fixed dial concentric with the axis of the handle and eoacting therewith, and means for effecting relative movement of said elements, the last-mentioned means including a ring shaped handle encircling the periphery of the dial and having a notched periphery, substantially as and for the purpose set forth,

In a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a record sheet supporting element movable about an axis, and a type carrying element, said elements having relative movement to effect the making of a record, and one of said elements being shiftable transversely relatively to the other, means for rotating the record sheet supporting element and shifting the shiftable element laterally for positioning said elements in printing relations, said means comprising a pivoted lever movable about the axis of the record sheet supporting element and con neeted thereto for rotating said element, and being also movable about its pivotal axis in a direction lengthwise of the axis of the record sheet supporting element for positioning the elements of the printing couple in trans verse relation, a dial for determining the position of the lever, and the lever having a handle near the dial, and operating means for moving one of said elements toward and from the other, the operating means including a member movable about the axis of the dial and having an annular handle located near the dial and concentric therewith, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a laterally shiftable element, an endwisely movable shaft connected to said element, and means for operating said element including an endwisely movable shaft arranged coaxially with the firstmentioned shaft and spaced apart therefrom, and a compression spring interposed between said shafts, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
39. In a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a laterally shiftable element movable about an axis, a rotary shaft for operating said element, and operating means including a rotary endwisely movable shaft arranged coaxially with the firstmentioned shaft and spaced apart therefrom, a compression spring interposed between the shafts, and means for transmitting the rotary motion from the operating shaft to the other shaft, substantially as and for the purpose described.
40. In a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a laterally shiftable element, a shaft connected to said element, and means for operating said element including a shaft arranged coaxially with the firstmentioned shaft and spaced apart therefrom, a compression spring interposed between the opposing ends of said shafts, and a comiccting member between the shafts and being connected to one of the shafts to partake of the endwise movement thereof and to the-other shaft by a lost-motion, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
41. In a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a laterally shiftable ele ment movable about an axis, a rotary shaft arranged coaxially with said element and fixed thereto, and operating means including a rotary endwisely movable shaft arranged coaxially with the first-mentioned snaft and spaced apart therefrom, a connecting rod movable with one of said shafts and connected to the other by a lost-motion, and a spring encircling the rodand interposed between the shafts, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
42. In" a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a laterally shift-able ele ment, a shaft connected to said element, and meansfor operating said element including a shaft arranged coaxially with the first-mentioned shaft and spaced apart therefrom, a compression spring interposed between the opposing ends of said shafts, a connecting member between the shafts and being connected to both shafts by a lostm0ti0n, and a spring for yieldingly preventing the lostmotion at one of said connections, substantially as and for the purpose described.
43. In a recording machine, a printing a couple comprising a laterally shiftable element movable about an axis, a shaft arranged coaxially with said element and being fired thereto to actuate the same, and means for operating said element including a shaft arranged coaxially with the firstmentioned shaft and spaced apart therefrom, means connecting the shafts including a rod arranged coaxially with the shafts, and secured to the operating shaft to partake of the endwise movement thereof, a buffer spring interposed between the operating shaft and the rod, and the rod being connected to the other shaft by a lost-motion, and a compression spring encircling the rod and interposed between said shafts, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
44. In a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a laterally shiftable element movable about an axis, an endwisely movable rotary shaft connected to said element, and operating means including a shaftarranged coaxially with the first-mentioned shaft and spaced apart therefrom, a com pression spring interposed between the opposing ends of said shafts, a connecting member between the shafts and being slid'ably connected to one of the shafts by a lost-motion and secured to the other shaft to partake of the endwise movement thereof, and means for transmitting the rotary motion of the operating shaft to the first-mentioned shaft, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
in a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a laterally shiftable element movable about an axis, a shaft connected to said element, and operating means including a rotary endwisely movable shaft arranged coaxially with the first-mentioned shaft and spaced apart therefrom, a connecting rod secured to the operating shaft to partake of the endwise movement thereof, and being connected to the first-mentioned shaft by a lost-motion, a spring encircling the rod and interposed between the shafts, and means for transmitting the rotary motion of one shaft to the other, substantially as and for the purpose described.
46. In recording machine, a hollow sup porting shaft, a printing couple comprising an element mounted on said shaft and rotatable therewith and shiftable axially thereof, and means for rotating the shaft and said element and for shifting said element on the shaft, said means comprising shafts extending into the hollow shaft and being keyed thereto and slidable axially thereof, opposends of the inner shafts being spaced apart, and a spring interposed between the opposing ends of said shafts, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
47. In a recording machine, a hollow supporting shaft, a printing couple comprising an element mounted on said shaft and rotatable therewith and shiftable axially thereof, and means for rotating the shaft and said element and for shifting said element on the shaft, said means comprising shafts extending into the hollow shaft and being keyed thereto, and slidable axially thereof, opposing ends of the inner shafts being spaced apart, a spring interposed between the opposing ends of the inner shafts, and connecting means between the inner shafts for transmitting the endwise movement of one inner shaft to the other inner shaft, said connecting means being secured to one of the inner shafts to partake of the endwise 1nove-' inent thereof and connected to the other by a lost-motion, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
48. In a recording machine, a printing couple comprising a laterally shiftable element, a shaft connected to said element, and means for operating said element including an endwisely movable shaft arranged coaxially with the first-mentioned shaft and spaced apart therefrom, a compression spring interposed between the shafts, and a returning spring connected to the operating shaft and acting thereon in the same direction as the compression spring, substantially as and for the purpose described.
