RECOIL PAD.
Application filed October 31, 1923. Serial No. 671,983.
This invention relates to recoil pads and more particularly to a device of this character which is placed upon the shoulder of a person handling a shot gun, rifle or the like to prevent the recoil thereof from injuring the shouldei. j
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be inflated to a desired degree so as to offer a desired resistance to the recoil of the ffun.
b A further object of the invention is to provide in conjunction with a device of this character holsters which may be sewed or otherwise secured within the hunting coats of the owner so that the recoil pad may be readily shifted from one .garment to another.
The invention further resides in the method of constructing the pad hereinafter set forth.
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose .of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein t Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the manner of applying the pad, and holster to a hunting coat; l
Figure 2 is an enlarged view showing the pad in position in the holster;
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the pad, parts being broken away;
Figure L1 is a section through the pad showing one manner of constructing the same; and
Figure 5 is a similar section showing a second manner of constructing the same.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the pad proper is formed by providiiig a flat coil 10 having a continuous passage 11 therein, one end of. which is closed, as at 12, and the opposite end of which is provided with an air'valv'e 13 by means of which the coil may be inflated, this coil being formed of rubber. The coil may be produced either by employing a single length of tubing, one end of which is plugged and the opposite end of which is provided with the valve 12d, and coilingthe same to provide a flat coil of the. desired shape and size or by moulding a coil'of the desired shape and size, forming in the moulding process the passage 11 having its inner end closed and its outer end provided with the valve 13. To opposite faces of the coil I apply layers of rubberized fabric 14, the fabric being of such size that the edges of the fabric pieces overlie the edges of the coil and the rubberized faces of the fabric being next adjacent the coil. These fabric pieces are then vulcanized to the coil and to one another about the edges thereof. The edges of the fabric are further secured together by means of eyelets 15 directed therethrough.
The pad is preferably reniform, one end thereof being slightly smaller than the other end. This end will hereinafter be re ferred to as the arm end of the pad. In conjunction with the pad a similarly shaped oclret 16 is provided, this pocket being formed of fabric 17 and 18 secured together about the smaller ends thereof and having the larger ends unconnected. The formed pocket is secured to the inner surface of the hunting coat or the like by stitching, the smaller end of the pocket, as at 19, to the fabric of the coat thereby stitching the flap 2() which is arranged next adjacent to the material of the coat. The flaps 2() and 21 are provided with coacting` elements of snap fasteners 22 which may be engaged with one another to retain the recoil pad in position in the pocket. The valve 13 is preferably secured to a flexible tube 23 of sufficient length to enable this valve to be reached by the mouth of the gunner for inilation without removing the pad from the pocket. It will be obvious that by providing pockets in different coats the recoil pad may be shifted from one coat to another thus eliminating the necessity of providingr ers of fabric arranged upon opposite faces of the flat rubber section and o greater size than the flat rubber section, said fabric Iaylayers being secured to one another` and ers being vulcanized to the fiat rubber iayabout the outer edges of the section, said ers, the air passage being in the form of a fabric layers being' free from connections to l0 coil, opposite faces of the section having one another intermediate said outer edges. grooves therein between adjacent turns of In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my the coil, said fabric layers extending into signature. said grooves, the outer edges of said'fabrie WILEY G. GIBSON.
