N. SINGER PLANE Filed Oct. 28 1925 Patented May 18, 1926.
NICKOLAUS BINGER, OF PITTSBURGH, FENNSYLVANIA.
PLANE.
Application filed. October 28, 1925. Serial No. 65,355.
My invention relates to planes and important objects thereof are to, provide a device of the character stated, in a manner as hereinafter referred to which embodies novel means for securing, adjusting and releasing the plane blade; which utilizes a comparatively short blade thereby providing for its economical replacement; whlch is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable and efficient in its use, compact, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention hereinafter described and claimed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a plane constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view of the blade clamp.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the blade-adjusting lever.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the inner side of the clamp latch.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view of a modified form of the device.
Referring in detail to the drawing 1 denotes the metal body portion of the plane consisting of the fiat base 2 and the verti. cally disposed side walls 3 formed integrally with respective marginal side edges of the base 2.
The usual manipulation handles at and 5 are fixedly mounted on the base 2. The former is disposed at the rear end of the base 2 and the latter at the forward end thereof.
The base 2 is formed with a transversely extending slot 6 for the projection of the cutting edge of the blade 7 and to provide clearance, forwardly of the latter, for the passage of the shavings during the planing operation. A transversely extending rib is disposed rearwardly of the slot 6 and in conjunction with the rear wall of the latter,
provides an inclined seat 8 for the rear side of the blade 7.
A clamp 9, provided with a pair of rearwardly extending, parallel disposed ears 10 adjacent to its lower end, is pivotally mounted on the transversely extending rod 11. The latter has its ends fixed in respective side walls 3, adj acentto the lower end thereof, and extends through the apertures 12 provided therefor in the ears 10. The clamp 9 is disposed in an inclined position in the body portion 1 and the lower end 13 thereof is curved rearwardly to provide an inclined contact face 14: to normally squarely engage the lower end of the blade 7 in the slot 6. The curvature of the clamp end 13 further prevents retardation to the passage of shavings through the slot 6, The clamp 9 is further constructed to provide a recess 15 directly forward of the ears let to provide clearance for the operation of the blade adjusting lever 16, to be described.
The lowerside of each of the ears 10 is formed with a notch 17. The notch 17 of one ear 10 is disposed parallel relatively to the notch in the other of the ears, and the same engage the marginal top edge of the blade 7 and provide the normal adjust-- ment of a new blade in the plane.
The adjustinig lever 16 is disposed longitudinally in the body portion 1 and is formed with a pair of depending apertured ears 18, which are pivotally mounted on the rod 11, inwardly of the clamp cars 14. The forward end 19 of the lever 16 is disposed at an angle to engage the top edge ofthe blade 7 and is formed with a. short depending flange 20, which overlaps the top edge of the blade 7 and prevents liability of disengagement of the forward lever end 19 from its position on the top edge of the blade 7. The rear end of the lever is formed with a threaded aperture 21 in which is mounted an adjusting screw 22. The lower end of the latter engages the base 1, and the manipulation of the screw 22 provides for the adjustments of the blade 7 through the slot 6 by the operationof the associated lever 16.
The clamp 9 is secured in the clamping positionby the clamp latch 23. The latter is provided with a pair of apertured cam ears 24:, which are pivotally mounted on the transversely disposed rod 25 fixed in the side wall 3 adjacent to the upper end thereof. The latch 23 is forced forwardly and disposed in the vertical position, as shown, in Figure 1, of the drawing, when the ears 24: engage the rear face of the clamp 9 to secure the blade 7 in the adjusted position, so that the latch 23 will not interfere with the operators hand while grasping the handle 4 in operating the plane.
The modified form of the device, shown in Figure 5, of the drawing, is identical in operation and somewhat similar in construction to the preferred form above described.
The body portion 26 differs from the preferred form in that the side walls 27 thereof are formed with a transversely extending bar 28 having an inclined forward portion 29. The clamp 30 and cam latch 31 are pivoted on a common rod 32 and the cam latch 31 engages and operates on the outer face of the inclined bar portion 29. The rear end of the blade adjusting lever 33 is formed with an open slot 3% in which the lower end of the T-bolt 35 is engaged. lhe upper end of the latter extends through an aperture 36 in the bar 28 and is engaged by the adjusting nut 37. The manipulation of the nut 37 will adjust the blade to the cutting position in the body portion 26.
A spring 38 is carried on the under side of the bar portion 29 and engages the adjusting lever 33 for normally maintaining a tensional pull on the T-bolt 35 thereby preventing the disengagement of the latter from the lever 33 during the adjusting oper-- ation.
It will here be noted that a comparatively short blade is used in connection with my improved plane thereby providing for its economic replacement. The shortness of the blade together with the manner of mounting the latter in the body portion of the plane will prevent chattering of the blade and provide a. most substantial efficient tool.
What I claim is:
1. In combination, a plane comprising a body portion consisting of a base and a pair of integrally formed side walls, said base provided with a transversely disposed slot, a clamp pivotally supported by said side walls, a blade having its cutting edge disposed in said slot, an adjusting lever pivotally supported by said side walls and engaging the top edge of said blade for adjusting the latter in said body portion, and means for actuating said clamp to secure said blade in the adjusted position.
2. In combination, a plane comprising a body portion consisting of a base provided with a pair of integrally formed side walls, said base formed with a transversely disposed slot, a blade having its cutting edge disposed in said slot a transversely disposed supperting rod mounted in said side walls, a clamp provided with a pair of apertured ears, said clamp ears pivotally connected to said supporting rod, each of said clamp ears formed witha notch engaging the upper end of said blade, the lower end of said clamp being curved rearwardly and engaging the said blade, a blade adjusting lever provided with a pair of ears pivotally connected to said supporting rod and engaging the top edge of said blade, and a cam latch pivotally supported by said walls and shiftable to actuate said clamp for locking said blade in the adjusted position.

In combination, a plane con'iprising a body portion consisting of a base provided with a pair of integrally formed side ails, said base formed with a transversely disposed slot, a blade having its cutting edge disposed in said slot, a transversely d posed supporting rod mounted in said side walls, a clamp provided with a pair of apertured ears, said clamp ears pivotally connected to said supporting rod, each of said clamp ears formed with a notch engaging the upper end of said blade, the lower end of said clamp being curved rearwardly and engaging the said blade, a blade adjusting lever provided with a pair of ears pivotally connected to said supporting rod and engaging the top edge of said blade, and a cam latch pivotally supported by said 'alls and shiftable to actuate said clamp for locking said blade in the adjusted position, said clamp formed with a recess on its rear side to provide clearance for the operation of said blade adjusting lever, sub stantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
NIOKOLAUS BINGER.
