BENCH PLANE.
applicati@ mea July 31, 1925. serial No. 47,268.
My invention relates to improvements in benclrplanes and has for its object to provide mechanism for adjusting the bit longitudinally and laterally of its bed to square the cutting edge of the bit with the stock and clamping means for readily andv securely :locking the bit in its adjusted positions.
A further object of the invention is to provide mechanism of the above-mentioned character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and eiiicient in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages ofthe in vention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
Inthe accompanying drawings. forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1, is a longitudinal sectional view of a plane constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2, is a plan view of the same,
Fig. 3, is a bottom view of the cutter bed,
Fig. 4, is a sectional view taken on lines 4-4 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 5 is a bottom perspective view of the thumb-wheel, and,
Fig. 6, is aperspective view of the bit.
In the drawings. wherein for the purpose of illustration. I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the body or stock 10 is of the usual channeled form and is preferably constructed of aluminium. The usual hand grips 11 and 12 are provided at the rear and front endsof the stock and the grip 11 has a central bore 13, closed by the hinged cover 14 which serves as a receptacle for grease and the like. The bottom of the stock forward of the throat 15 has an auxiliary movable base plate 16 mounted thereon, which is'adjustable longitudinally to regulate the size of the throat. The plate is adjusted through the medium of the screw 17, j ournaled in the raised fiange 18 'and having threaded engagement with the opening through the stem 18 of the hand grip 12.
The usual frog or cutter bed 19 is mounted on the stock by the screws 2O extending through elongated slots 21, which permit adjustment of the bed with respect to the throat 15. The bed supports the bit 22 having a longitudinal keyhole slot 23 and a transverse slot 24 above the upper end of the slot 23, to receive the peripheral edge of the milled head 25 ofthe adjusting screw 26 which i, threadedly engages the bore 27 through the bed, allowing adjustment of the bit longitudinally of the bed. A springvplatev28 lis mounted on the bit 22 and is held in clampfA ing engagement ktherewith by the setscrew 29 and the depending lug 30 which engages the keyholev slot 23.
Lateraladjustment of the bit is effectedthrough the thumb-wheel 31 having a" central depending bearing 32, journaled on the pin 33 and an eccentric 34 formed integral with the bearing which extends through the plate 28 and engages the key-hole slot 23 in the bit. a bevel flange 35', bearing against'the top of the plate 28 and has its peripheral edge milledso it may be readily gripped by the fingers and turned, when it is desired vtor lateraly adjust the bit. `The` upper end of the pin 33 is threaded, as at 33, and extends The thumb-wheel is surrounded byv above the top of the thumb-wheel, having a clamping nut 36 threaded thereon.
f lower end of the pin is disposed in a slot in the cutter bed and adjacent its end is a reduced square shaped portion 37, providing a circumferential groove, adapted to receive the bifurcated end 38 of the locking bar 39, whichl is slidably mounted in the spaced straps 40 secured to the bottom of the cutter bed by the screws 40. The upper end of the bar is bent downwardly to form a finger engaging hook 41 for moving the bar into and out of engagement with the pin and the lower end of the bar is provided with shoulders 42 limiting the upward movement of the bar.
In operation, the bit is first longitudinally and laterally adjusted with respect to the bed, through the medium of the screw 26 and thumb-wheel 31, after which the locking bar 39 is moved into engagement with the groove of the pin 33 and upon turning of the clamping nut 36, it is seen that the thumb-wheel will be pressed into tightv clamping engagement with the plate 28 securely holding the bit in its adjusted position upon the bed. When it is desired to readjust the bit, the clamping nut 36 is unscrewed, thereby automatically releasing the pressure of the thumb-wheel on the plate, so that the bit isl free for adjusting. i
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that certain changes in the shape,
The
size and arrangement of theparts ma be made Without departing from the spirit of' sai A"hit and bed, a thumb-wheel journaled on said pin having an eccentric engaging said 'sloti means' carried by said bed for locking said pin. against movement, and
means'carriedby the upper end of said pin for clamping said thumb-wheei in engagement with vsaid bit.
2. In a bench plane bit clamping means,
the combination with a bed and bit7 of a pin i extending through said bit and bed having a reduced Vsquare portion adjacent its Vlower end, a. looking bar slidably mounted beneath y said bed having a bifurcated end adaptedto enga said square portion of the pin, a thum-Wheel journaled on the upper end of said pin, and means carried by said pin for` clamping said thumb-Wheel in its adjusted position.
- 3. In albench plane, the combination of a had, a bit supported by said bed,4 havlng a central bearing journaled on said pin, an
`eccentric formed integral with said bearing engaging said slot,V means carried by said l bed foriocking said pin against movement,
and means carried by said pin for clamping Vsaid thumb-wheel in its adjusted position.
4. In a bench plane bit clam ing means, the combination with a bed and it,of a pin extending through said `bit `and bed, a thumbwheel journaled on the upper end of said pin, releasable means for locking said-v pin against movement, and means fmrclamp-l ing said thumb-Wheel in itsv adjusted posi-A tion.
5. In a bench plane, the combination of a bed, a bit supported bysaidrbed' having a longitudinal slot, a pin extending through said'bed and slot, a thumbfwheei journaed on said pin having an eccentric adapted to engage said siot, said wheel having `a beveled flange, means for lockingsaid pin against movement, and means carried by said pin for clamping said vWheel in its adjusted position. f Y
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
