DRILLING MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. GILMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, county ot Suolk, State ot' Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Drilling Machines, of which the tollowing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts. y
My invention relates to drilling machines and particularly b ut not exclusivelyto one for drilling rock.
My inventionwill be best understood from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings ot one specic embodiment of my invention selected for illustrative purposes while the scope ot my invention will be more particularly pointedv out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Fig. 1 shows a longitudinal sec-tion of a portion of the drilling machine selected for illustrating my invention;

Referring to the drawings of the embodiment selected for illustrating myv invention,- the drilling tool is represented by a, drill steel 1.v For imparting percussions to the tool I have provided a hammer piston 3 lwhich in the present embodiment of my invention" imparts a blowto the end of the drill steel through the tappet 5.v
I have shown the hammer piston mounted in the bore 6 of the cylinder section 7 which section is provided with an end wall 9 and with the alternate admission and yexhaust passages 11 and 13. These passages may b-e controlled by a suitable valve so as to alternately admit and exhaust pressure iuid to and from opposite sides of. the hammer piston and thereby cause the latter to reciprocate. The particular details ot the mechanism forr controlling the motive fluid for causing the hammer to reciprocate do not form' a part of my present invention andwill not be further described. It will be understood that the motive fluid may be controlled or theliammer caused to reciprocate in any suitable manner, other thanthat just described. K'
Besides the cylinder section 7 I have shown an intermediate section 15 which serves as a tappet block for the tappet 5 and have shown a forward section 17 which serves as a front head or chuck casing for the machine. These sections are held assembled by tie-bolts 19 which extend :trom the rear head block (not shown) of the niachine through the cylinder section, the tap- -pet block and chuck casing, the ends of the kbolts exteriorly ot the chuck casing carry- 'slots 29 which receive the similarly located radially extending lugs 31 carried by the inner sleeve.- When the parts are assembled the lugs 31 enter the recesses 29 which causes the sleeves to be iiiterlocked against relative angular movement.
Near its rearward end the outer chuck sleeve member 25 is illustrated as provided with an annular series ofexterior gear teeth 33.` Thesev gear teeth vare adapted to coopcrate with gearing for driving the chuck in order that the drill steelmay be rotated.
Inthe submitted embodiment I have shown `for this purpose a yoke 35- p'rovided withy the annular series ot' internal gear teeth 37 for meshing with the gear teeth 33. This kyoke is adapted to 'loe-gyrated bymeans of the eccentrics 39 which are carried by the shafts 11. The shafts may be driven by any suitable means` as for example, by a rotary engine not shown) connected with the shafts in any suitable manner. At their forward ends the shail'ts are journalled in hearing recesses l2 formed in the chuck casing.
Adjacent the tappet block the chuck casing is enlarged to :torni a gear chamber 43.
To provide this chamber the chuck casing is x formed with a rearward axially located cylindrical bore 1l5 and intersecting this bore tormed with oppositely located cylindrical bores 4:7. vThe tappet block is provided with an axial cylindrical boss 49 which enters and lits the bore eiland further is provided with` 'flanges 51 which extend across the bores 15.
In the tappet block are formed cylindrical bores 53 of the same diameter as and in alignment ywith the boresa?, a portion of the bores 53 beine formed m the flanges and f. s 1 the remainder thereor in the cylindrical boss 49.
Supporting tie shafts Lil are cylindrical bearing locks 55 iv nch enter the bores e? and 53 'and further are received in the cylindrical bores if in the forward face of the end wall of the cylinder'. it will be noted by this construction that the bearing blocks serve as dowels which align the cylinder, the tappet block and the chuck casing and prevent relative rotation between these parts. For holding the bearing blocks against movement l prov'de keys 58' received in key-ways and respectively formed in the bearing blocks and the flanges 5l` while the end of the keys abuts the end of the chuck casing which holds the keys in position. .at its rearward side the tappet is provided with the cylindrical boss 'Sl which is received in the bore in 'the end wall Il of tlie'cylinder section and this insures centering of the tappe-t 'the piston and steel.

It is of advantage to at times prevent rotation of the chuck relatively to its casing, especially in machines in which the hole is spotted by bodily rotating the machine by hand, as for example, in a stoper. For this purpose and for the purpose of providing a brake for opposing rotation of the. chuck under the influence of the power means, l provide friction means cooperating with the chuck, and herein to thisend l have shown the chuck casing provided with a semi-annular recess 69 which receives a band Il surrounding the chuck and adapted to be forced into engagement with the exterior surface of the sleeve 9.5. The band may be of flexible material, preferably metal, as for example. a split spring ring of internal diameter greater than the exterior diameter of the chuck so that when the ring is spread as shown by Fig. 4i it will substantially be out of engagement with the chuck. For operating the band l herein provide its ends with opposed nuts 73, one nut engaging the screwthreaded portion of the men'iber 77 and the other the oppositely pitched screwthrcaded portion 79 of the member 8l. The member 8l is in the form of a spindle provided with a reduced diameter portion and on which is carried the member T7, vthe latter being in the form of a sleeve. For operating the right and letthand bolt thus formed l provide a handle and for keying the handle to the members and the members to each other provide the Cotter-pin 87.

Although l have described for purposes of illustration one specific embodiment of my invention it will be understood that I am not limited thereby toits particular details but that wide deviations may be made therefrom without departing` from the spirit of my invention.
Claims:
l. ln a drilling machine, a front head, a chuck rotatably carried by said front head, means for rotating said chuck relatively to said front head, and releasable frictionv means controlled by the operator for preventing rotation of said chuck relatively to said head.
2. ln a drilling machine, a chuck, power means for rotating said chuck, a friction brake for opposing rotation of said chuck, and manually controlled means for rendering said brake operative or inoperative.
3. ln a drilling machine, a drilling tool, an angularly moving part for imparting angular movement to said tool, friction means for opposing movement of said part,
and manually controlled means for rendering said friction means operative or inoperative.
4. In a drilling machine, a chuck, a casing for said chuck, a band encircling said chuck, and manually operated means carried by said casing i'or operating said band to cause it to grip or release said chuck.
5. In a drilling machine, a drill steel, a
chuck comprising a sleeve for carrying saidv steel, a second sleeve surrounding the sleeve first mentioned and interlocked therewith, power means in driving relation with said sleeve first mentioned for rotating said chuck, means for engaging one of said sleeves for preventing rotation of said chuck, and manually controlled means for rendering said means engaging one of said sleeves operative or inoperative.

In a drilling machine, a drill steel, a chuck comprising an inner and an outer sleeve, said sleeves being interlocked against relative rotation, said inner sleeve nonrotatably carrying said steel, power means i'or driving said chuck and connected -to lsaid outer sleeve, and manually controlled means for preventing rotation of said steel and adapted to engage said outer sleeve.
7. In a. drilling machine, a drill steel, a hammer piston for operating said steel, a chuck carrying said steel, a chuck casing in which said chuck is rotatably mounted, a band encircling said chuck, an operating handle carried by said casing, and means operated by said handle for constricting said band to cause it to grip said chuck and thereby prevent rotation of said chuck relatively to its casing. a

In a drilling machine, a drill steel, a hammer piston for opera-ting said steel, a chuck carrying said steel, a chuck casing in which said chuck is rotatably mounted, means including a band encircling said chuck for Jrictionally gripping said chuck to prevent rotation of said chuck relatively to said casing, and means including a screw and an operating handle carried by said casing for actuating said band for rendering it operative or inoperative.
10. In a drilling machine, a drill steel, a hammer piston for operating said steel, a chuck carrying said steel, a chuck casing in which said chuck is rotatably mounted, means including a band encircling said chuck for rictionally gripping said chuck to prevent rotation of said chuck relatively to said casing, and means including a cam and an operating handle carried by said casing for actuating said band for rendering it operative or inoperative.
11. In a drilling machine, a drill steel, a hamn'ier piston for operating said steel, a chuck carrying said steel, a chuck casing in which said chuck is rotatably mounted, friction means carried by said casing for yieldingly gripping said chuck to prevent rotation thereof, and an operating handle carried by said casing for rendering said friction means operative or inoperative.
