WINDOW REGULATQR FiledJan. ll,v 1922 m 7,71, 5M N i@ MTM mi M Patented Apr. 27, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY E. NORWOOD AND 'FREDERICKGL MAIER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO PERFECT WINDOW REGULATOR CORPORATION, OF LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
WINDOW REGULATOR.
Application led January 1-1, 1922. Serial No. 528,585.
To all io hom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, HARRY E. Noawoon and FRnDnRicK G. MAIER, citizens of the United States, and residents ofNew York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to window regulators adapted to raise or lower windows, and it is particularly adapted for use with thattype of regulators now well known and employing two sprockets or wheels, a1 chain or 'other linear inernber running over said sprockets or wheels, means for rotating said sprockets and a connection between the-cliain and the window whereby the window may be raised or lowered as desired upon rotation of the rotating means in the proper direction.
The object of the invention is the provision of a. device which may be cheaply constructed and easily manufactured and which will automatically adjust itself at all ltimes to keep the chain or other lineal member taut and thereby prevent it from running off the sprockets under abnormal conditions.
A further object of the inventionis the mounting of the regulator in position b y novel means which will permit it to be bodily and easily removed without removal of the side of the door or other portion forming` a wall of the window well.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating a practical embodiment of the invention:
Fig. l is a side elevation of the window regulator as applied to a window Fig. 2 is an 'enlarged side elevation (partly broken away) of the lower portion of the regulator.
Fig. 3 V is a vertical cross-section oiizthe line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig; ais a Vhorizontal.section .on the line 4- 4ofFig.2.
Fig. 5 is a front elevationof the slide member.
Fig. 6 is an end View of thebolt on which the lower sprocket. is mounted.
' plate 3.
Fig. 7 is a horizontal section on the lino Z-7 of Fig. 5.
Referring in detail to the several figures of the drawing:
1 indicates a window which is reciprocated vertically in a suitable frame the lower part of which is indicated at 2. 3 indicates a plate secured tothe lower part 2, said plate having an upper sprocket l mounted thereon. A vertical depending bar or strap is indicated at 5, the lower end of said bar being provided with bevelled edges 6. The base 7 of the window'well has a bracket or support 8 secured 'thereto by any suitable means as by the screws as shown, which bracket is provided with a slot 9 the top of the wall thereof being rounded or curved as at 10.
.The lower end of the bar 5 is received by the slot 9 of the bracket 8 and is loosely held therein while the upper end of said bar is fastened as by the screws or rivets 1l to the This manner of mounting and loosely holding the bar in the'window well is particularly desirable as it Vpermits the installation or removal of the device without tearing down a side wall of the window well or the upholstery of the door as is necessary in most cases in order to fasten the lower end of the bar within the window well. In the present construction the bar is merely slipped within the window well and inserted in position within the slot by feeling, the bevelled edges 6 of said bar and the rounded portion 10 of 'the bracket 8 considerably facilitating the proper positioning of the bar within the slot in an obvious manner.
The bar or strap y5 is provided with a lower slot 12 therein and with an upper vslot 13, said upper slot being so cut in the mate- 'rial as to forman arm 14. 15 and 1 6 indi- Cate slldabl plates Veach of Which is pivided with depressions ipressed out if the metal to recei'xf the anti-'friction balls Ais which are supported in suitable depressins in the bar or Astrap as illustrated. The `upper ends of the plates are bent inward-ly into engagement 'with eachother wrdn-urne slot '13 and roi-rn shoulder i9. 2o indicates a compression spring encircling the arm 14, the upper ends ot' the plates 15 and 16 and bearing against the shoulder 19.
A bolt 20Y extends through the slot 12 in the bar and also through openings 21 in the plates 1t and 1G. Said bolt is provided with ears 22 thereon received by slots 23 in the plate whereby rotation of said bolt is prevented. rlhe iub portion 211 of a lower rotatable sprocket 25 is mounted on the enlarged portion 26 of the bolt 20', a longitudinal movement or" said sprocket on said portion 26 being prevented by a flange 27 on the end of said bolt and by an annular ridge 28 in the plate 15 pressed out ot the metal. A nut 29 is screwed on the end Yont the bolt and holds the plates togethex in an obvious manner, a Washer 30 preferably being interposed between the plate 1G and said nut. To prevent a rocking or turning movement ot the sprocket on the bolt We have provided the plate 15 with tivo lugs orY projections 81 pressed out ot the metal on either side thereot' which are adapted to contact with said bar 5 to prevent such rocking or turning movement.
An endless driving chain 32 passes over the upper sprocket. l and the loiver sprocket 25 and is held taut by the action ot the spring 2O which, as hereinbeitore described, presses downwardly against the vertically slidable member constituting the plates 15 and 16 and which carry theY sprocket 25 therewith, thus preventing the chain from running oil the sprockets as is manifest.
