Be it known that CLAUDE 'E. MusonAvn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewistown, in the county of F ergus and State of Montana, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Camping Outfits, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. I

This invention relates to certain improvements in camping outfitsand it is an object of the invention to provide'a novel and improved outfit of this general character especially designed and adapted foruse 1n connection with. automobiles or other vehicles.

it is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character embodying a structure, which, when not in use, may be folded or compacted to occupy a minimum of space and in a manner whereby the outfit may be readily attached to an automobile or the like for transportation.

Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved outfit of this general character embodying foldablc sections together with means associated with certain of the sections to hold a mattress and kindred bed clothing against displacement when the structure is folded.

An additional object of the invention is to provide a'novel. and improved outfit of this general character having associated therewith a novel and improved means whereby a canopy or tent may be effectively supported in applied position with respect to the structure.

The sections of each pair have associated therewith andconunon thereto bed fabric 5 of any ordinary or preferred construction but which readily flexes when the sections of a pair are folded one upon the other.

The sections when in extended relation arev adapted to support thereon bed clothing generally indicated as 6, such clothing including a mattress and suitable coverings and to hold said bed clothing in proper position upon the bed structure when the sections thereof are folded and also to maintain the springs '7 comprised in the bed fabrics'under tension when the sections of the structure are folded, I employ in connection with a section of each pair a cross barS over which a bed bottom 5 and the bed clothing 6 carried thereby fold when the sections of apair are folded one with respect to the other. As herein disclosed, a section of each of the pairs of sections, such as A and 0, adjacent the outer or free extremities of the side members or rails 1 are provided with a substantially alined plate 9 and swinging hooklO. The plate 9 is provided with an opening 11 through which is freely inserted an outstanding trunnion or pin 12 carried by a bar 8 while the opposite end portions of the bar 8 is provided with an outstanding pin or trunnion 14; with which the swinging hook member is engaged. By this means the bar 8 may be readily applied or removed as required and at the same time be maintained in effective engagement with the bed clothing 6 for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.

The outer or free end portions of the side members or rails 1 of the section A have pivot-ally engaged therewith the supporting legs 15 connected for unitary swinging movement by the cross member or strip 16; The legs 15 and the strip 16; when the bed structure is folded, are swung upwardly to, a point cl'ose'to the section A as is clearly illustrated in Figure and held in such position by the buttons 17 carried by the adjacent side members or rails 1. Associ ated with the legs 15 and the side member or rail 1 of the section A are the brace members 17, each of which having inter posed therein a break joint 18 to facilitate movement of.- the leg 15 into its folded or compact position.

The inner or rearv portions of the members 1 of the section A each have also pivotally engaged therewith asupporting leg 19 which is adapted to be folded inwardly of the section A and associated with said leg 19 and the adjacent side member or rail 1 is a brace member 20 also provided with a break'joint21.

Theouter side-member l of t-hesect-ion B at its adjacentcross-member :2' has pivotally engaged therewith a supporting leg 22 adapted to be folded alongside of the ad jacent side member or rail 1 and co-acting with said leg 22 and said member or rail 1is a brace member 23 also provided with abreak joint 24C. The leg 22 also has an inwardly facing eye member 25 which engages the hook end portion 26 of the rod 27, the opposite end portion of said rod being freely or loosely connected as at 28 with the cross member 2 of the section B. The

rod 27 provides additional means for maintaming the leg 22 in extended or working position but yetmay be moved orswung into inoperative position.

The end portion of the inner side member 1 or rail 1 of the section 13 adjacent the cross member or rail 2 thereof has pivotally engaged therewith a supporting leg 29. Coactingwith the leg associated with the side member 1 is a brace member 30 having interposed therein a break joint 31 so that the leg 29-may be readilyfolded in close relation with respect to the section B. The

The pintle 32 comprised in the hinge connecting the outer side member or rail 1 of the sections C and D is extended outwardly and forms a mounting for the sup porting leg 33 which is adapted to be swung into close relation with each of the sections C or D as the requirements of practice may prefer when the bed structure is to be folded or compacted.

As is illustrated in Figure 8 a tent or canopy i. is adapted to be disposed over the bedstructure when positioned for use and the outer or foot end portion of the structure is adapted to have extending upwardly therefrom the supporting props 3st for maintain and each of said propsis provided at its ends *Wlfil'i the outstanding pins 39 and at a point inwardly of each of'said ends with an outstanding eye member 40. uppermost pin of the top prop 38 is operatively engaged with the tent or canopy T.

Supporting the tent adjacent the head portion of the ,ection C are the props 42 constructed and operatively connected in substantiallythe same manner as hereinbefore set forth with respect to the props 38. When the structureis compacted the props 34, 38 and 42 are interposed between the superimposed sections B and C as is clearly illustrated in Figure 7 of the accompanying drawings.

I also find it convenient to have the adjacent end portions of the assembled props 38 support a shelf 43 or the like as is illustrated in Figure 8.

Then the bed structure is folded or compacted the overlying sections A, B, C and D are held in such relation by the straps 44 secured to the outer side members or rails of the sections A and C.

Although not illustrated, I find it of advantage to incase or cover the folded or compacted bed structure within the tent or ca nopy T whereby the complete outfit may be readily and conveniently transported.

In transporting the outfit on an automobile or the like the same may be secured to the rear of the vehicle as generally illustrated in Figure 9 or mounted upon a running board of the vehicle or otherwise as the requirements of practice may prefer.

From the foregoing description 1t is thought to be obvious that a camping outfit constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as here inafter claimed.

I claim;

A camping outfit of the class described comprising a bed structure consisting of a pair of sections, means for hingedly-connecting adjacent endportions of the sections to permit the same to be folded one upon the other, a bed fabric common to the sections, a plate carried by a side portion of one of'the sections adjacent to its hinged connection and extending beyond the fabric, a swinging hook carried. by the opposite side portion lof said section adjacent its hinged connection, a bar adapted to be disposed across the tabs ric adjacent the hinged connection between the sections, the extremities of the bar being provided with outstanding trunnions, the plate being provided with an opening to receive one of said trunnions and the swinging hook being engageable over the second trunnion, said bar serving to hold the fabric under tension when the sections are in folded relation and also providing a retaining means for bed clothes when the sections are folded.
