Description

RALPH B HOSNER, or sanrnnnorsoo, oAL'IroRNrA.
' sors-BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 8, 1919. Serial No. 275,855.
To all whom t may concern: f
Be it known that I, RALPH B. I-IosNER, a citizen of thefUnited States, and a resident of the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Sofa-Bed, of which the followinof is a specification.
Iy. invention relates toa combination sofaand bed.I
An object of the invention is to provide a sofa capable of being opened to provide a double bed. ,y
Another object of the invention is to provide a sofa bed in which the bed `portion may be unfolded and detached from the rest of the apparatus.
The invention possesses other features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of my invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specications. It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the showing made by the said drawings and description, as I may adopt variations of the preferred form within the scope of my invention as set forth in the claims. l
Referring to the drawings: n
Figure 1 is a verticalD sectional view through the sofa bed of my invention when the apparatus is folded to provide a sofa.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the sofa bed when the bed frames are eX- tended to provide a double bed.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the bed frame when detached from the rest of the apparatus.
My sofa bed comprises a main supporting frame or housing 2, in which the seat frame 3, back frame 4L and bed framel sections 5 and 6 are appropriately mounted. The bed frame sections 5 and 6 are pvotally connected together by a knuckle joint 7. The section 5 is provided with lugs 8 adapted to pivotally seat in 'sockets 9 fixed on the sides of the housing. The outer end of bed frame section 6 is provided at each side with a leg 11 connected by link 12 with section 5 so that the extension of the leg accompanies the unfolding of the bed frame. An independently controlled leg 13 is also pivoted on each side of the section 5 so that if desired the bed frame may be lifted clear of the housing and set up as a bed independent thereof.
A mattress 111 is disposed upon the bed rframe and when theJ sections fold into the for the mattress when folded 'on the outside of the folded sections and so the two ends of the bed frame `are provided with movable-parts which are extended when the bed is unfolded and retracted when the bed is folded.
At the head end of section 5 an extensible section 16 is slidably arranged on pins 17. A head board 18 is' pivoted to the extensible section and is adapted to turn down upon the mattress to help secure it on the frame. A spring 19 is so arranged as to retain the head board either in the upright or folded position. The foot end of section 6 is similarly provided with an extensible section 21 and pivoted foot board 22 retained by spring 23. A stop 24C is fixed on each side of the housing to support the bed frame when folded within the housing.
-The seat frame 3 is pivotally attached to the housing by pins 26 passing through the arms 27 fixed on the frame. The form of the arms and the position of the pins are such that the seat frame may be thrown up to permit the bed frame to be extended as shown in Fig. 2. A link 28 provided with a handle 29 and adapted to engage a fixed y frame d is provided with an arm 32 on each end, formed with a slot 33 engaging spaced rollers 34 and 35, so that the back frame is verticall slidable in the housing, and the lower ege of the frame is provided with shoes 36 which rest on the arms 27 so that the back frame rises and falls with the movement of the seat frame.
*With the bed frame in the extended position7 as shown in Fig. 2, the upwardly opening knuckle joint 7 retains the sections in horizontal alinement. In folding into the housing the section 5 inverts drawing the non-invertible section 6 in on top of it. The under surfaces of the two sections, thus fold together7 with the mattress on the outside of the sections.
I claim:
l. In a sofa bed, a housing, a bed frame comprising pivoted sections adapted to be folded within said housing, a mattress asso- Pate'ateanm?. 2e, resi.`
lfrom the normal position shown in Fig. 1
i ciated with said bed frame sections, a section slidably arranged on the end of each bed frame section tosupport the ends of the mattress, a board pivoted to each slidahle section and forming head and to be turned over upon the mattress to hold it upon the bed frame when thef=latter is folded Within the housing, and means for resiliently retaining the boards in either position. l Y
2. A hed structure having a mattress frame, a section slidably mounted on an end of the frame, and a board oldably mounted on said section to form, in one position, a foot or head board and adapted to fold over the mattress.
3. A bed structure having a mattress foot l; ard s' V when the bed frame is extendedy and adapted V16th day of January,
La., 1 Y l 1,398,324
frame, an end section 'slidably mounted on the frame to be extended therealong, and a spring' controlled liootb'oard oldably attached to the sliding section.
4. A bed structure having a mattress frame, an end Vsection having` a pin and slot connection with the frame so that `saidseo- `tion can be extended at the end of the frame,
a board pivoted on the said section between its ends so as to fold from a positionover a mattress on the frame to a position to Jorm an end board for the frame, and means Vfor temporarily holding the board in either 'of its positions.
Intestimony "whereof, I have hereunto lset my hand at San Francisco, California, this 1919. RALPH B.V HOSNER
