COMBINED SHADE-HOLDER AND SOC'KE'E-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pgrtgnteql Dec, 10 1%}18,
Application filed May 16. 1918. Serial No. 234.871. I
'1 117/ u-lzom. it may won/writ:
Be it known that l. doorru lineman a citizen of the l'nited States. residing at (lakville, in the county of liitchtield and State of Connecticut. have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Shade-Holders and SOClUi-(UYQISZ and i do hereby declare the iollowiug. when taken in connection with the aceon'ipanying drawings and the characters of reference marked tt ereon. to be a full. clear. and exact desc'i'ption oi the same. and which said drawings constitute part o this application, and represent, in-
Figure l a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section. of a combined shadc-holder and socket-cover constructed in accordance with my invention and applied to a common form of lamp-socket.
Fig. 9 a reverse plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 a sectional view of the combined shade-holder and socket-cover detached.
Fig. 4 a view partly in side elevation and partly in section, showing my improved shade-holder and socket-cover applied to another form of socket.
My invention relates to an improved combined shade-holder and socket-cover for use in conjuncticn with standard incandescent electric lamp-sockets, the object being to produce a simple and convenient shade-holder performing the supplemental function of partly inclosing the lamp-socket and so improving the appearance of the fixture but without making any change in the wiring necessary as is the case when the shadeholder is made to entirely inclose and cover the lamp-socket.
With these ends in view, my vention consists in a combined shade-holder and socket-cover having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and. pointed out in the claim.
l'n'carrying out my invention as herein shown, l employ a bcllshaped shell consisting of a tapering body 2 from which an integral shade-receiving flange 3 depends. the. said flange substantially corresponding in depth to an ordinary shadoholder and mounting a plurality of thumb screws -i the proje ting inner ends of which are engaged with the flange r lip at the upper end of the shade. ll .chin the said body i locate a concentrically arranged sleeve 5 the lower end of which is formed socket with its attendant objections with threads 6 and the upper end of which is shaped to form a groove Tfor the reception of the inwardlyturned upper edge ot the said body, whereby-the sleeve is mounted therein.
When such a combined shade-holder and, socket-cover is applied to an ordinary in candescent lamp-socket 9. the threads 6 of the sleeve 5 are screwed upon the threads 10 near the lamp-reeeiving end of the socket until the upper edge of' my improved combined part is brought to a bearing upon the shoulder 11 of the socket, as shown in Fig. 1, the said shoulder forming a seat for the combined holder and cover to be screwed against. The lines of the combined part now merge into the lines of the upper portion of the socket. and form an attractive design, concealing the awkward contracted lower end of the socket? I thus provide a combined socket-cover and shade-holder which avoids the covering of the entire in the way of wiring.
In the application of my invention shown by Fig. i, my improved combined part is applied to a lamp-socket 12 having threads 13 formed at its extreme lower end and flanked on the inside by an independently formed head 14 When my improved com bined device is applied to a socket of this form, the threads 6 of the sleeve 5 engage with the threads 13, but the bead 1 L forms an abutment which prevents the upper edge of the combined part from being seated against the shoulder 11 of the socket. The eitect of the construction shown by Fig. 4
is substantially the same as that shown by Fig. 1, and the same advantages are socured of improving the exterior appearance of the. socket by partially covering it, without changing the mode of wiring it.
It will be noted that the depth of the body 2 is so proportioned to the length of the sleeve 5 that the body extends sufficiently below the lower end of the sleeve to entirely conceal the awkward contracted lower end of the socket 19. which is highly desirable, as already explained. In such construction the lower end of the sleege stops well above. the horizontal plane of the thumb-screws 4 so that ample space is provided for the reception of the flange or lip of the shade.
A combined shade-holder and lamp-socket cover for incandescent lamp-sockets consistbelow the lower end of the sleeve to conceal ing of a bell-shaped shade-carrying body the contracted lower end of the socket and furnished at its lower end with shade-rethe lower end of the sleeve stopping above taining means, and an independently formed the horizontal plane of the shade-retaining 5 concentric socket-coupling sleeve located means mounted in the lower end of the body within the upper portion of the said body for engagement with the lip or flange of and having its upper end connected with the shade. the upper end thereof and its lower end In testimony whereof, I have signed this threaded for, engagement with the threads specification in the presence of two subscrib- V 10 'at the lower end of thethreaded and shoulmg witnesses.
dered lamp-socket upon which the said structure ispositioned by the engagementof V ADOLPH its upper end with the shoulder thereof, the Witnesses: saidbody and sleeve being proportioned in J. S. NEAGLE,
15 length so that the body extends sufliciently NITA S. Knnnooe.
