Be it known that I, MosEs F. Gann, a citi-r zen of the United States, and resident of Lexington, in the county of Middlesex'and Sta-te of Massachusetts,- have invented an Improvement in Presses, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention pertains to improvements in presses of the type used for applying fastener parts to their carrying fabrics. It is among the objects of the invention to provide a press organized with handle parts and dies to facilitate the manual location and appliance of the fastener part to the carrying fabric.
In the drawings, which show a preferred. form of one embodiment of my invention Figure l is an elevation showing a preferred form of press in use for applying a fastener part to a carrying fabric; and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, illustrating the mechansm of the press, such mechanism being broadly old.
Referring to the drawings and to the preferred form of my invention selected for illustrative purposes, I have shown a press including a frame 3, supporting a fixed die 4 and a movable die 5 adapted to be actuated toward the fixed die l by movement of the lever 6 acting through suitable cam mechanism 7. The die 5 is returnable by the act-ion of a spring 8. The form of the dies 4c and 5 may be varied to suit the fastener part which is to be applied, following the usual practice.
In order accurately to locate the fastener parts on that portion of the carrying fabric l0 where it is desired to place them, it has been found desirable that the hand of the operator should be in such position that his fingers may be adjacent to, and preferably Contact with, a fastener part during the location of the fastener on the fabric and the initial application of pressure. Thus, if the left hand of the operator remains in this position during the application of final pressure actuating the securing of the fastener to the fabric, this left hand is at a decided disadvantage as compared with the right hand by reason of the leverage afforded the latter by the handle 6. It is, therefore, desirable to provide a construction wherein the hand of the operator may be in adjacency to thefastener during the initial portion of the fastener vapplying operation and may later shift to a position providing greater leverage during thosev portions of the fastener applying operation -wherein the fastening parts aredistorted by the dies. I-
have found that it is of great advantage in insuring certainty of operation, in guarding against slippage, and in speeding upthe fastener applying operation, to provider as a handle portion a part forming'a continuessential, any arrangement of parts provid-v ing a path of easy and guided travel of the hand from one of the dies to the handle secured to the frame being satisfactory.
While I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that I have done so for purposes of clarification and not for purposes of limitation, and that my invention is best defined in the following claims.
Claims.
l. A hand press for applying fastener parts to their carrying fabrics comprising a frame carrying opposed upper and lower dies, means carried by the upper die for holding a fastener .part in assembly therewith, a lever for operating said upper die, and a handle portion aligned with and forming a continuation of a frame portion of the press that extends into adjacency to the lower die, whereby an operator may have one hand on the lever and the other on the frame for positioning a fastener part on the lower die during an initial relatively light approaching movement of said dies and may then slide said other hand along the frame portion onto the handle portion forming a continuation of said frame portion while said dies are held in their initially approached position to a position where final pressure may be applied Without one hand having any substantial advantage in leverage over the other. p
2. A hand press comprising, in combination, a frame part having a fixed die adjacent to the bottom thereof, a movable die located above said ixed die, a cam pivoted on said frame above said die, a handle extending from said cam for operation thereof, and a fixed handle extending from said frame in alignment with the bottom thereof to provide an uninterrupted straight path along which one hand'of the operator slides after initial movement of the cam operating handleto apply pressure equal to that applied to the Cain-operating handle.
3. A hand press for securing separable yfastener parts to their carrying medium,
said press comprising a frame, a fixed die and a movable die positioned on said frame, a fastener part carried by said movable die, a fixed h'andle rigidly secured to and forming a continuation of said frame and aligned with the bottom thereof, and a second handle pivoted upon said frame for operating the movable die, said fixed die being disposed relatively close to the bottom of said frame, and said movable die being movable toward said fixed die on a line substantially transverse to the direction in which said fixed handle exerts pressure whereby the operator having one hand on said second handle and the other on said vframe adjacent to said ixed die may exert an initial pressure upon said pivoted handle to move said movable die toward said fixed die for initially attaching said fastener parts against opposite sidesI of the carrying medium While thereafter the operator may slide his hand from the frame along the handle secured thereto and apply pressure equal to that applied to the pivoted handle.
