'On the said' bar A are two'ilat plates or wings, C1, C2, formed of' thin plates shaped' to the contoury of an ordinary cuft and formed with loops D, D, on their underl side. These loops embrace the bar A and permit the two plates C1, C2 to glide thereon Withrelation: to each other; The bar AY and the ways a, Va' are so constructed and arranged that said bar is'. held against' rotation at all times, thereby maintaining' the cui plates C1, C2 in parallel relation with saidways at all times diuing-reciprocation of said bar.. Wing C2 istemporarily secured to bar A' by means of screws d, d,which pass down through the wing C2 and enter a pair of holes in thebar A. There are a series of these holes in bar A, so that' the position of. the wing. C-2 thereon may be adjusted back and forth with respect to the bar A according to the size ofthe 'cuff that is being operated on. C1 is a similar wing, corresponding to the opposite end of the cuff. It is also provided with a loop D and slides on the opposite end of bar A. A spring F tends to press plate C2 along the bar A. A roller G on the under side of plate C1 is, by spring F, brought against a fixed diagonal plate E which tends, as the carrier bar A is moved back away from the press B, to force plate C1 slightly towards plate C2. Thus when the carrier bar A, together with the plates C1 and C2, reach their rear position, away from the press B, those plates, C1 and C2, are a little closer together. Thus it is easy to slip the cui over the two plates. Then when the plates start towards the press, they automatically spread apart under the inuencekof spring F as the roller G separates from the diagonal cam-plate E. This serves to spread the cuff tightly between the plates.. It shouldn be mentioned that the plates C1? and. C? lieunderneath only one ply of the cuft andlth'ereforevforms aslight bead on each endof thecu and around the rounded corners; Moreover, the4 cuit. applied:` toithe plates'hasfbeen sewerl` andk then` turned' inside out.V InA addition, the cuit platev C2 is secured: adjustably` tol ther bar. A bythe aforesaid; screws d, d entering theholes in. A. lThis provides for the permanent adjustment ofthe plates C1` and-C2 while the" aforesaid spring F provides for their temporary spreading'` apart for applying the'l cuff t'o them.
Onthe presser' side, Fig.l 1,4 P represents the lxed bottom plate on which is also afxedcross bar', or guide-plate' H, against which the leading edge of the cuff abuts as-itmovesup toi-the press and is'fthere held while the' plate R., carried bya plunger,l descendsv and presses the-cuitv as it' lies on they base plate P. @n the aforesaidA guideplate H there isl a slight notchh, formed along its front edge, asappearsin Figs. 1, 2and.3`. This notch h receives. the edge ofthe cuff alongthe front'andforms a slight bead thereon corresponding tothe beading formed-'on` the cu-i'f ends by the spreading pressure of. platesv C1 and C2'. The bed plate is heated.- in a well known manner by a heater K' (Fig. 1) embedded" therein, The operation includes the application of the cul to the-plates C1, C2, followed by the forward movement of said? plates and the cuff thereon up towardsand' under the press, and thene'theA descent of the press on the stretched out plates. Then the press is raised, the cuff1 is drawn back' together with the plates and removed preparatory tothepressing ofthe next cuff.
. What'we claimvas new andi desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A cul pressing machine comprising a press, ways projecting from said press and supported thereby, a carrier slidably mounted in said ways so as to move toward and away from said press, a transverse bar mounted on said carrier member, a stationary cuff spreader plate mounted on said bar, a second culi spreader plate slidably mounted on said bar, a spring reacting between said carrier member and the movable cuff spreader plate to normally move said plate away from the stationary plate, a stop bar normally engaging said movable plate so as to limit movement thereof under tension of said spring, said stop bar being inclined so as to progressively control movement of the second plate under tension of said spring as the carrier moves toward and from the press, said cuff spreader plates being shaped to fit within a cuff.
2. A cui pressing machine comprising a press, a carrier member movable toward and from the press, a transversely disposed bar rigidly anchored to said carrier member and provided with free end portions projected laterally from the carrier member, a cuff spreader plate anchored in a normally fixed position to one free end portion of said bar, a second cui spreader plate slidably mounted on the other free end of said bar in such manner as to be adjustable with respect to the rst plate, a spring interposed between said slidable cuff spreader plate and said carrier member in such manner as to normally move the last mentioned ouif spreader plate from the other cuil spreader plate, and means for limitingmovement of the slidable cui spreader plate away from the other plate, said last mentioned means including means for moving the slidable cuff spreader plate V against the tension of said spring duringrnovl.-Y

3. A cuff pressing machine comprising apress, a carrier member movable toward and from the press, a transversely disposed barrigidly anchored to said carrier member and provided with free end portions projected laterally from the carrier member, a culi spreader plate anchored-ina normally xed position on one free end portion of said bar, a second cuff spreader plate slidably mounted on the other free end of said bar in such manner as to be adjustable relative to the -xed spreader plate, a spring located beneath said bar and interposed between the slidable cuff spreader plate and the carrier member in such manner as to normally move the slidable cuff spreader plate away from the fixed cui spreader plate, and means for limiting slidable movement of the slidable cuff spreader plate `away from the iixed spreader plate under the tension of said spring, said last mentioned means including means for gradually moving the slidable cuii" spreader plate against the tension of said spring during movement of the carrier member away from said press.
4. A cuii pressing machine comprising, a press, a carrier member movable toward and fromA the press, a transversely disposed bar rigidly anchored to said carrier member and provided with free end portions projected laterally from the carrier member, a cui spreader plate anchored in a normally xed position on one free end portion of said bar, a second cuff spreader plate slidably mounted on the other free end of said bar in such manner as to be adjustable relative to the xed spreader plate, a spring interposed between the slidable cui spreader plate and said carrier member in such manner as to normally move the slidable cuil spreader plate away from the xed cuff spreader plate, a depending stop member carried by the slidable cuff spreader plate, and a stop' bary having an inclined surface diagonally disposed\ relative to the path of movement of said carrier member and so positioned as to serve as a graduated abutment for said depending stop member.
5. A cuff pressing machine comprising a press, parallel guides supported in front of said press, a carrier slidably mounted' in said guides, a transversely disposed bar rigidly anchored to said carrier member and provided with free end portions projected laterally from the carrier member in such manner as to extend over said guides, a cu spreader plate anchored in a normally fixed posivtion to one free endportion of the bar, a second rcuff spreader plateslidably mounted on the other free end ofsaid bar in such manner as to be adjustable with respect to the other fixed plate, and
Vmeans constructed and arranged to move the slidable cui spreader plate toward and from the fixed cui spreader plate during movement of the carrier toward and from said press."
6. -A cuff pressing machine comprising a press, guide means in front of said press, a carrier engaging said guide means and movable toward and from the press, a transversely disposed flat bar fixedly anchored to said carrier member and provided with free end portions projected laterally from the carrier member, a cui spreader plate anchored in a normally fixed position to one free end portion of the bar, a second cuff spreader plate slidablymounted on the other free end of the bar, means for yieldablyrmoving the slidable cuff spreader plate away from the fixed cui spreader plate, and means for limiting movement of the slidable cui spreader plate away from the fixed cui spreader plate, said meansbeing constructed and arranged to permit continuous sliding movement during movement of the carrier toward and from the press.

A cui pressing machine comprising a press, guides extending from the front of said press, a carrie'r slidably mounted in said guides and movable toward and from the press, a iiat bar xedly securedvto the top of said carrier, said bar having a plurality `of openings in one end, acuff spreader plate adjustably mounted on the last mentioned end of said bar, means Vengaging any of said openings in such manner as to'xedly anchor said cuff spreader plate, a second cuff spreader plate slidably mounted on the other end of the bar, and means for effecting continuous slidable movement of the slidable cuff spreader plate toward or from the iixed spreader plate during ythe travel of said carrier toward and from the press.
