WILLIAM n. THOMPSON, or DETROIT, MICHIGAN, AssrGNon To nu'r'cirrns can noon- .ING COMPANY,.OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
i can noor.
Application filed January 28, 1924. Serial No. 689,093.
To (ZZZ 10710221 it may concern; I i
THOMP- sox, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit,in the county of l'Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Roofs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to car roofs of the type known as flexible in which load sustaining metallic roofing sheets are relatively movable and are provided with weather proofing means. It is usual to provide such roof frames with gusset plates or other means for holding the same square with i the car ends, such means being independent of the overlying roof. The present inven tion dispenses with such independent bracing means and secures the necessary bracing and the squaring of the frame by a rigid portion of the weather-proofing roof. The roof as a whole is not, however, rigid, as the rigid panels are limited to the end portions only of the frame, while the main portion is covered by a flexible roof. Thus by combining these flexible and rigid elements, I secure all the desired flexibility, together with the requisite rigidity and squaring of the frame and with a simplified construction.
In the drawings: 7
Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of the roof frame; r I
Figure 2 is a cross-section thereof;
Figures 3 and 4 are longitudinal sections on lines 3-3 and l4 respectively of Figure 5;
Figure 5 is a cross'section in a different plane from Fig. 2.
In the construction of Figures 1 to 4, A
are the side plates of the car, which as shown are metallic 2 bars. B is the car end shown as a metallic plate construction. C are metallic carlines of inverted channel cross section extending from side plate to side plate, D are purlins extending longitudinally and secured to said carlines and R is the ridge pole. C, purlins D, and the ridge pole R constitute the skeleton frame upon which the roof is supported.
At the end of the car extending across The side platesA, carlines the general slope ofthe roof from ridge to eaves and is provided with "depending flanges E overlying the side plates and riveted or otherwise rigidly secured thereto.
There is also a depending flange E for portions form in'effect a carline and con-- form to the general shape of the carlines C.
Overlying the skeleton portion of the car frame is a flexible metallic car roof of any suitable construction, but as shown, this comprises loadsustaining metallic roofing sheets H extending from the ridge to the eaves, being provided with upstanding flanges H and H at the ridge and the sides thereof and a depending return-bent flange H at the caves. The latter has a hooked engagement with the depending facia flange I which retains the sheet from endwise displacement. lVeatherproofing caps J embrace the upstanding flanges H H of adjacent sheets and also embracethe intermediate carlines. Ridge caps K embrace the upstanding flanges at the ridge and junction caps L secure the carline caps and ridge caps in position and weatherproof the joint therebetween. The plate H, which is adjacent to the panel E, is provided with a depending end flange H which is bolted or otherwise secured to an end facia plate M, this being secured to the flange F. p
lVith the construction as described, in service, all of the roof, with the exception of the portion formed by the panels E, is free to flex, the plates H being relatively movable to each other and to the roof frame. This will prevent overstressing any portion of the roof through the weaving or distortions of the roof frame. On the other hand, the panels E are ofsuflicient strength to hold the roof frame square at the ends and are of suflicient strength to withstand any stresses to which they are subjected.
What ,I claim as my invention is:
1. In a car roof, the combination with a skeleton frame, of a roof overlying said frame comprising in the main relatively movable'metallic roofing sheets and weatherproofing means therefor, and a metallic panel fa mi g P t n of its ree r 's y ettached to said frameand serving, to brace the same.
2. In a car roof, the combination with a skeleton rooffranie', of a fiexibleacar roof overlymg the ina Or portion-of said frame,-
and a metallic panel forming a complementary portion of said roof rigidly securedto' tached to the side plates, root frame and:
ends of the car and forming a weatherproof portion theroofl and a flexible rooi oven lying the" remainder of the. frame and secnred thereto.
4. In a car root, the combination Witha skeleton root frame'coinprising side plates, :ar ends,carlrnes and 'purlins, ot a: metallic panel extending across the end portion otthe roof. being rigidly secured to the side plates, purhns and car endand servingto brace-the:
latter, and a flez iible root comprising relatively; movable load sustaining roofing; sheets and weatherproohng means overly ng said-skeleton traine. and complei'nentary to tlieportionof the root tormed by said panel. 5; In a car root the combination with a skeleton roof frame including side plates and a metallic carend, of a metallic panel forming an extension of said car end overlyingthe end portion ofsai d t'raine and rigidly securedto the side plates I thereof, and a flexible car roof composed of relatively movable load sustaining roofing sheets and weatherproofing means therefor, said flexible root overlying the skeleton portion of said frame and being complementary to said rigid panel;
(3. 111 a car roof, the combination with a skeleton roof frame comprising side plates, car-ends,icarlines and purlins, oli a metallic panel extending between the side. plates ad jacenttothe'endlof the car and rigidly conneetcd'to said side-plates and end the. inner edge of said panel beingifashioned to form a coinplei'nentary carline, and a flexible root eoinpi'ising. relatively movable. load sustaining. roofing sheets, and weatherproofing means therefor, said flexible roof overlying said skeleton frame and being.,complementary to said rigid panel.
in. testimony whereof IQ aflix my signature.
