To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, -WILLIAM D. THOMIZ- son and. ALFRED R. Winsoir, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Car- Roots, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to car roofs of the outside type, and it is the object of the invcntion to provide a thoroughly weatherproof light gage metallic covering for the board roof, and one which is compos d offrcely, independently-1novable units, so as to provide flexibility.

Our improved construction is one designed particularly for use with the wooden frame and'boai cover type of car root's, in which A. are the sine plates, B the carlines extending between the same, (3 the ridge purlin and D the roof boards preferably formed of matched lumber and extending across the car-lines and purlins.
The metallic cover is formed of a series of light gage roofing sheets E, which are provided with upstanding edge flanges F and down-turned eavc flanges G having open inwardly-extending return-bends H. Intermediate these sheets are weatherproofing caps I embracing the upstanding flanges of said sheets, and said caps are secured by bolts I, preferably riveted to an embossed portion J and extending through an aperture K in the roofing boards. T are Wooden strips which extend transversely of the roof preferably from cave to ridge being arranged between the upstanding flanges F of the adjacent sheets beneath the caps I. These strips T form stops for limiting the movement of the sheets, and also preferably from supporting bearings for the edges of the sheets. To this end the upstanding flanges F are provided with laterally extending edge portions F, which overlap and rest upon the strips T and sustain the load of the caps I when clan'iped down upon the portions S. 'U is a fascia which is secured to the sideoi thecar below the cave flanges of the roofing sheets and extends outward beyond the same, so asto form a protection against anything brushing along the side of the car. The ends of the caps are also downturned to overlap the downturned flanges of the sheets at S and to lie adjacent thereto.
With the construction as described, the metallic covering is free to adjust itself to any flexing, weaving or distortion of the wooden frame and without any bending of the metal, as the roofing sheets are pivotally secured and relatively movable. Sullicient clearance space is provided between the caps I and the spacer strips T to permit of the n'iaXimum relative movement of the sheets, while the return-bent flanges H engaging the downturncd flanges It on the strips 0 will limit the amount of relative movement.
' The pressure of the foot-flangcs'S and the caps I will hold the sheets down upon the board roof and will ,also press the lateral flanges ll" into contact with the upper face of the strip T. The lateral flanges F resting upon the upper face of the strip T will support the raised portions S oi" the sheets normally in engagement with the foot flanges S of the caps. This is desirable since the roofing sheets are light gage and have not sufficient strength if their outer edges are not supported, to return their raised portions into engagement with the foot langcs of the cap when the raised portions are subjected to abnormal stresses. The present arrangement will produce an effective weather-proofing joint, while not interfering in any way with the free independent movement oi the sheets.

.In a car roof, the roof sub-structure, a light gage metallic covering therefor and comprisinga series of roofing sheets having the portion of the sheet adjacent to the side edge thereof raised above the plane ofthe body of the sheet, a cap spanning the joint between adjacent sheets and bearing upon said raised portions ofthe sheet at the joint, and means at the junction of adjacent sheets forming a support for the raised portions of the sheets adjacent to the outer edges of said raised portions.

In a car root, the root sub-structure, a light gage metallic covering therefor and comprising a series of roofing sheets having the portion of the sheet adjacent to the side edge thereof rai ecd above the plane of the body of the latter, a cap spanning the joint between adjacent sheets and having foot flanges bearing upon said raised portions of the sheet at the joint and a supporting hearing at the junction of adjacent sheets forming a spacer for said cap and acting to support the outer edges of said sheets.
6. In a car roof, the roof'sub-structure a light gage metallic covering therefor and comprising a series of roofing sheets having upstanding and laterally-extending side flanges with a portion intermediate said upstanding flangcs and the body of the sheet raised above the plane of the latter, a cap embracing said upstanding flanges and bearing upon said raised portions of the sheets, and a supporting hearing intermediate'said upstanding flanges and supporting said laterally-extending portions thereof.
7. In a car roof, the roof sub-structure, a light gage metallic covering therefor and comprising a series of roofing sheets having the portion of the sheet adj accnt to the side edge thereof raised above the plane of the body of the sheet, a cap spanning the joint between adjacent sheets and bearing upon said raised portions of the sheet at the joint, and means at the junction of adjacent sheets forming a support for the raised portions of the sheets adjacent to the outer edges of said raised portions, the sides of said support forming means and cap being suilicicntly spaced apart to permit oflimited lateral movement of said sheets.
