UNITED STATES PATENT oFFicE.
GEORGE P. WIGGINTON, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO KALAMAZOO LOOSE LEAF BINDER COMPANY, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
- TEMPORARY BINDER.
Application filed April 11, 1925. Serial No. 22,287.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE I. VVIeGiN- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful In'iprovements in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in temporary binders. 1
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved temporary binder which is well adapted for the binding of loose record sheets, catalog sheets and the like which is very simple and economical in structure and quickly and easily manipulated to release or introduce the sheets.- 4
Objects pertaining to details and econonies of my invention will. definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by, the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is to clearly defined and pointed out in the claims. I
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a perspective view of a binder embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. II is a plan view with the front cover open.
Fig. III is a fragmentary plan view with the sheets thrown forwardly upon the front or top cover showing the manner of attaching the binding strips to the bottom binding bar. 7
Fig. IV is a detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line 1M4 of Fig. II.
Fig. V is a fragmentary plan view of the means for adjustably securing the binding strips.
Fig. VI is a fragmentary section on a. line corresponding to line 6'6 of Figs. V and VII showing details of the binding strip clamping or securing means.
Fig. VII is an enlarged detail section on a line corresponding to line 77 of Figs. V
and VI. 2
Fig. VIII is a detail section on a line corresponding to line 8-8 of Fig. VII.
Fig. IX is a plan view of one of the anchor plates for connecting the bind ingstrips to the bottom binding bar.
In the drawing the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 and 2 represent the bottom and top covers respectively of the binder and 3 and f the bindingbars which are secured to the rear edges of the covers by the flexible hinges 5 so that the covers close over the binding bars when the binder is closed.
The binding strips 6 are preferably formed of tape of suitable strength the bottom binding bars having slots therein through which the binding strips 6 are arranged and to which they are connected by the anchor plates. 8. These anchor plates are formed of sheet metal stampings and have slots 9 therein through which the binding strips are arranged and secured by the tongues 10, the plates being thus secured to the strips so that the strips may be arranged through the openings'or slots of the plates on the outer side of the bar.
The top binding bar has openings 11 therein through which the binding strips are arranged and has mounted thereon clamping plates-12 wlth openings 13 thereln'regv jistering with the openings 11. The front edges of the openings 13 are turned upwardly and serrated to provide upturned teeth '14. Clamping members 15 are provided with downwardly projecting pivot ears 16 embracing the downturned pivotears 17 on the, clamping plates and pivoted thereto by the pin 18.- i i v The ears 16 of the clamping plates are arranged so that when the clamping member pivoted thereon is swung forwardly to a position parallel to the clamping plate the binding strip is clamped upon the teethof the clamping plate and is securely held where clamped. It may be freed, however,
by an upward pull on the binding strip which swings the clamping member on its pivot freeing the binding strips so that they may be adjusted or removed as may be desired. i j
The sheets'to be bound indicated at 19 have alined holes 20 ther into receive the binding strips. 7
My improved temporary binderis very simple and economical in structure and is especially designed for binders of small sizes and light weight. At the same time ill) in, binding strips disposed, through said,
slots, anchor plates on said binding strips disposed on theouter-sidesot saidjbottorn binding bar, clamping plates. mounted on the outer side of saidtop binding bar and having openings therein registering with said slots thereof, the front, edges of the openings of said clamping plates having upwardly directed teeth, said plates having downwardly projecting pivot earsdisposed in said; slots in said top binding bar, and clamping members havingv downwardly projecting pivot ears mounted on said; pivot ears of said clampingplates so that said clamping members may be swung forwardly to an approximatelyparallel relationto said clamping plates clam-pingthe-binding strips upon saidteethithe rear edges o t',the;clainpingmembers when closed being in approximately. the plane of theteeth.
2. In a, temporarybinder, the combinationwith the covers, o fbindingbars hinged within said covers andhaving opposed slots therein, binding strips disposed, through said slots, anchor; plates on said; binding strips disposed on; the.. outer, sides-of; said bottom binding-bar,clamping-plates mounted onthe-outer'side o -f said topbinding bar and, having openings; therein; registering with saidslots thereof, said plates having downwardly projectingrpivot ears disposed in, said slots. in said topbinding bar, and clamping members having downwardly projecting pivot ears mounted on said pivot ears of said clamping plates so, that said clamping members may be; swung to an approximately parallel; relation to said clamping plates clamping the bindingstripsiupon said teeth, the rear. edges oftheiclamping members. when closed? being inapproximately the plane of the teetlr 3. In a temporary binder, thecombination ,with the covers, o t bindingrbars-lhinged within said covers, the top bindingbar havingbinding strip openings therein, binding strips disposed. through said, openings, clamping. platesmonnted on the outer. side ofsaid top binding bar and having openings therein registering with the slots there.- of, the front edges of the openings of said clamping plates having upwardly directed teeth, said plates haying'downwardly pro jecting pivot ears disposed in said slotsin said top binding bar and clamping members, having; downwardly. projecting pivot ears. mounted; on said pivot, ears; of said claniping plates so that-{saidclamping memf hers may be swung forwardly in an approximate] y parallel relation to said clamping plates clamping the binding strips upon said teeth, the rear edges of the clamping members beingin approximately theplane otthe teetln 4. Ina temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of binding bars hinged within said covers, the top binding bar having binding strip openings therein, binding strips disposed through said openings, clan'ipingplates mounted onthe outer side otgsaichtop bindingbar and-having openings therein registering with the slots thereof, said plates having downwardly projecting pivot earsdisposed insaid slots in said top clamping bar, and, clamping members having. downwardly projecting pivot cars mounted on said pivot ears of said clampingplates so that said clamping members may, be swung forwardly in an approximately. parallel. relation to said clamping plates clampingthe binding strips upon said teeth, the rear edges of V the clamping members being in, approximately the plane of the teeth.
5. In. a, temporary binder, the combination of top ;a11 chb0ttoinbinding bars, the top bindingbar having bindingstrip openings therein, binding stripsconnected to the bottom bindingbar and disposed, through said openings in, said top bindin bar, clamping plates. monnted on the outer sideof said top binding bar and having openings therein registering. with the. openingsof said top binding. bar, the front, edges. of, the, openings of said clamping plates having upwardly directed teeth, said plates. having. clownwardly projecting pivot, ears disposed in saidppenings. in sait .top bindingbar, and clamping members having. downwardly projecting pivot ears mounted on said pivot ears of-said clamping, plates so that said clamping members may. be swung forwardly to clamp thebinding strips upon said teeth.
6., In a: temporary binder thecombination of top and bottom binding bars, the top binding. bar having binding strip openings therein, binding strips connected to the bot- ,tom' bindingbar and, disposed through, said openings in said top binding bar, clamping plates mounted on the outer side of said top binding. bar, and. having openings therein registering with the openings of said top bindingbar, thefront edges of the openings of said clamping plates having upwardly directed teeth, andclam'ping members pivotally, mounted on said clamping plates so that said clamping members may be swung forwardly to .c1anip thebinding-strips upon said teeth.
In witness whereot I have hereunto set my hand.
