i simmer HINGE.
Application' 1ii ed' agust 9,y i923. vserial No. 656,595.
To all whom t moyrconcern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAMJ.; KEENE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring`I- Iinges, of
` which the following is a specification.
My invention ,f relates to double-acting spring hinges which are vnormally held in a neutral positionandzare ladaptedto swing to either side of the neutralposition against a springk tension which acts to returnjthe hinge to the normal or neutral position.
' The'principal objects of niyinvention are to provide animproved construction afford-` ing .convenient adjustn'ient of the neutral position; Vto effect ythe adjustment by operaspring hinge embodying my invention;
Fig. 2, a sectional yview on the line 22 of Fig. 1, with-partsy broken away to dis-v close ydetails of the construction; and
Fig. ,3, a top view of the housing of the spring hinge mechanismtaken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.l f f Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a gate or door which is mounted to swing on the support 2, said gate being provided at the upper endfadjacent the inner edge with a recess 3 having a plate secured therein and provided with an upwardly projecting pin 4 engaging in an aperture 5 of the bracket 6 which latter is ser cured by the bolts 7 to the support 2. A
similar bracket 8 is secured to the support 2 at a distance below the bracket 6. by means of the bolts 9 and has an arm 10 provided with an aperture 11 in axial alignmentwith the aperture 5 of the bracket 6. A'bushing 12 isengaged in. the aperture 11 and provided with an annular flange k13 aroundthe upper end which is seated in a corresponding recess 14 in the arm 10,so that thej upper surface of the bushing 129is flush with the upper surface of the arm l0 and this bushing .is provide@ with .15 @standing laterally in a wide recess 16 in the top of the arm 10.,.l i y f The walls of they arm 10 at opposite sides of the recess lhave aligningapertures '17 loosely engaged" by' a screw 18 which is threaded throughv the outerv extremity of thearm 15 and held against axialv displacement by the head 19 at one end and the nut or washer 20 at the other end, the latter being held in placeon the end .of the screw by upsetting Ior riveting overthe'end o'f the screw against the outer face'of 'the nut'or washer, as indicated at 21. The apertures '17 are'preferably enlarged atitheir outer ends to accommodate the head 1,9 and a nut or washer 20, as shownf in F 2,'so that Ythesev parts do not project beyond the sides ofthe arm l0. Y'
Operation of thek screw 18 serves to swing the arm 15 laterallyin the recess 16 around an axis concentric with the aperture 11 and the apertures 17 are suiciently large to provide for suchl displacement of the screw 18 as occursby reason of the'swinging of the arm 15 with which the screw is engaged.
= The bushing 12 has fasqurare aperture 22 preferably tapered from the upperfto the f a spring hinge of any suitable type, such, for example, as a spring hingeof myk ap lower end to receive the 'correspondingly Y formed lower end23 ofv the spindle'24 yof plication, Serial No. 506,738, filed October fio, 192i.
In spring hinges of this character it is soinetimesnecessary to have an adjustment for correcting a tendency of the hinge to assume an improper neutral position, or it is frequently desirable to arrange the hinge so that the gate or door will -st-and somewhat ajar or to one side or the other of a central position, as shown byV dotted lines at 25 in Fig. 2, and the V'adjustingscrew 1S serves to afford the desired adjustment for either purpose and permits such adjustment to bek readily effected as it requires only Ythe adjust-ment of the single niemberl.v
- In applying spring hinges of this chau acter to gates or doors, it is desirable to avoid the necessity of accurate cutting or fitting of the door or gate in 'order to install the hinge properly thereon, and to this end I have constructed the hinge ca'sing. 26 which 1s of circular crossl section,v
as shown in Fig. 3, with a'. flat face 27 at one side, of substantlcllg" that'llkes 9? the door or gate so that a square-cornered notch eut in the corner of the door or gate will accommodate the hinge casing 26 and afford a nice tit of the side of the casing Q6 with the side et the notch. A ton-gue projects laterally from the lovver edge of the casing 26 and is provided With a number o't apertures 29 to receive screws 30 for securing the hinge casing on to the door or gate.
lVhile have shown and described my invention .in a preferred term, am aware tha-tvarions changes and modilications may be made Without departing from the principles of my invention, the scope of which is to bedetermined by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A double acting .spring hinge comprising a bracket having spaced attaching plates and an arm having an aperture With an annular seat around the aperture and a recess extending radially from the aperture between and communicating with the space formed between the side plates of the bracket,v a bushing in the aperture having an .annulartlange rotatably engaged in the seat flush with the top of the arm and provided With a radially outwardly extending arm disposed in the recess of the bracket, an adjusting member rotatably mounted in the side flanges of the bracket and extending across the recess, said adjusting member having Ithreaded engagement With the radial' arm and held against longitudinal movement to adjust the bushing, a spindle having a squared end fitting a socket in the bushing, and a hinge casing journaled on and oscillatable around the spindle.
9,. A double acting spring hinge compri;- ing a bracket having an arm, with an aperture and a seat around the aperture, the bracket being open between its sides and communicating with the aperturey and seat, a bushing rotatably mounted in the aperture and seat and provided with an arm disposed in the opening, a single adjusting member rotatably mounted in the sides oit the bracket With its ends. countersunk therein and having threaded engagement with the arm, said Ymember being held from longitudinal movement to adjust the bushing rctatably, and a hinge casing adapted to be secured to a door and having a spindle counected to turn with the bushing.
