R. WOLK l REEL Filed July 2 7, 1925 Figil Patented Feb. 9, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RAYMOND WOLK, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI. Y
REEL.
To JZ whom t may concern: l
Be it known that I, RAYMOND Worin, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Reel, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to reels of the type adapted for use as portable hand reels in the winding of 'clothes lines, and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved portable hand reel capable of use in winding clothes lines and the like, and comprising a hub including a number of longitudinal pieces attached to strengthening blocks and to end pieces serving as the flanges of the reel, one of which has a handle attached thereto, vin combination with an axle member extending rotatively through one of the end pieces and through the blocks of the core into contact with the opposite end piece, which limits longitudinal movement of the axle member in one direction, and means for preventing withdrawal of the axle member.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved reel of the character and approximate structure mentioned in which the parts are readily detachable for purposes of repair. Y
Other objects of the invention Will appear from the accompanying description taken in connection with the drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved reel with certain parts in section to illustrate the relationship of the axle member lto the other parts.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation from the end beyond which the axle member extends.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the opposite end of the reel.
Fig. t is a cross sectional View on the line 4.4 of Fig. 1.
My improved reel consists of a pair of ends 1 and 2 of approximately equal length and having their extremities at right angles to their side edges, so thatthey will stand upright and support the windings on the reel out of contact with the floor or surface upon which the reel is supported.
A polygonal block 3 is attached to the end 1 by glue and by nails 4:; and a polygonal block 5. is similarly attached to the' end 2 by glue and by nails G. Each of the blocks 3 and 5 is bored to form a round hole in which an axle handle member 7 is rotatively mounted, the handle member 7 also extending through a round hole in the end 2 and having its opposite end abutting against the inner side of the end 1 and thereby limited from longitudinal movement in one direction. l l
The blocks 5 have their polygonal sides in the same planes, and a number of cross bars 8 are glued thereto and additionally A handle 13 is attached to the outer suri face of the end 1 by a fastener 1li and extends in a plane parallel with vthe axis of the axle 7 and serves as a crank to co-operate with the axle 7 to rotate the reel in winding.
Rigidity for the handle 13 is obtained by a block 15 attached to the end 1 by glue and by nails 16. The block 15 has a hole in which the handle 13 is fitted.
From the foregoing it will be seen that my invention obtains all of its intended objects and purposes in a highly eflieient and simplified manner, and is ycapable of application to many useful purposes and of variation within equivalent limitsV without departure fromthe nature and principle thereof. I Vdo not restrict myself unessentially, but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. A reel comprising a pair of parallel ends, a block attached to the inner side of each of said ends and having a central hole tl'ierethrough, a number of bars attached to said blocks and Vabutting against said ends, an intermediate block attached to said bars and having a hole therethrough in alinement with the holes through said first named blocks, an axle member extending rotatively through one end and through the holes in all of said blocks and abutting against the opposite one of said ends, and a handle attached to said opposite end.
2. A reel comprising a pair of parallel ends, a number of bars rigidly supported between said ends, an axle member extending through one end of the reel and extending longitudinally between said bars and having one end abutting against the opposlte end of the reel, means preventing 'Withdrawal of said aXle,`and a handle attached to said opposite end of the reel.
3. A reel comprising a, body portion, a pair of parallel ends supporting said body portion, an axle rota-tively extending through one of said endsandthrough saidbody portion andabutting against the opposite endfof the reel and lhaving 4one end projeotng beyond said end of the reel through which said axleextends, means preventing Withdrawal of said axle, and a handle attaohed to the opposite end of the reel.
