This invention relates to improvements in removable handles for scrubbing brushes and the like and one object of the invention is to provide a handle of this character flexibly operable on brushes, such as scrubbing brushes that are used for floors or otherwise, having an extended handle.

A further object is the provision of a scrubbing brush of this character in which the several parts will more efficiently perform the various functions required of them.

With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists essentially in the novel combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and illustrated by the accompanying drawings that form part of the present specification.

Referring now to the drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.

Figure l is a side elevation of the scrubbing brush fitted with my improved handle.

In the drawings, A. is a device as a whole comprising a brush or the like 10 of any suitable form or material on which is fixedly mounted and secured by means of braces 11, a hollow standard or receiving member 12.

Recesses in the top of the standard at 13 and 13 are designed to receive therein and operatively engage with the cut-out end of a stub shaft 14: secured in one end of a sleeve 14, the other end of which is open for the insertion of a handle 15.

The shaft let is designed to engage with the standard 12, and is held in engagement therewith by means of a hook member 17 centrally sunk in the back of the brush 10 to which is secured a coil spring 18 extending upwardly through the inside 19 of the standard, and engaging with a pin 20 centrally sunk in the member in and pro vided with a looped end 21.

It will be seen from the foregoing that a spring actuated knuckle joint is formed between the two members 12 and 14.

formed plate 22 is situated and. secured at each end to the members 12 and 1 1 respec- The plate is provided with a pivotally mounted hook member 23 adapt-ed to engage with a screw or pin 24 in the standard 12 extending through an orifice in the lower end of the plate.

The other end of the plate is removably secured to the member 1 1 by means of a set screw 24;.

If desired the device may be used with a resilient joint by disengaging the hook member 23 and lifting the plate 22 from' engagement with the pin 2 1 the orifice in the plate being slightly larger than the head of the said pin, thus leaving the joint free to move with pressure on the handle. The brush may also be used in a lateral position by means of the recess 13 in the standard 12.

After the plate 22 has been disengaged from the pin 24 the shaft 14 is lifted or pulled from engagement with the recess 13 and turned 90 to engage with the recess 13", andused in the same manner as before.

As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently midely different embodiments of my intion within the scope of the claims cona ted \vi rout departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all 1.: rained in the accompanying ape iicacion and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

l t hat ll claim as my invention is:

1. A removable handle for brushes and the like comprising in combination with a brush, a bored standard rigidly secured on the back of the brush, a recess formed in the top of the standard, a stub-shaft having a cut out end adapted to engage with said recess to form a knuckle joint therewith, handle-carrying means carried by the shaft, and means for operatively holding the shaft in engagement with the standard comprising a retaining member anchored to the back of the brush in the bore of the standard, a pin member in the end of the stub-shaft and a coil spring connecting the pin member and said retaining member whereby a spring-actuated knuckle oint is provided.

2. In a device of the character described,

a brush or the like having a bored standard rigidly secured on the back thereof and formed with a V-shaped slot across the top a handle-carrying member adapted to operatively engage With said slot, a retaining member carried by the brush and spring means connecting said members, to form a resilient connection between the handle and brush and means to convert the resilient connection into a rigid joint oomprising a plate removably connected With the handle-carrying member and the standard, a pivotally mounted hook on said plate and a pin in the standard extending through said plate to engage With said hook, whereby a rigid joint is provided, and whereby on the plate being disengaged, a spring-actuated joint alone is provided.
