To all whom itmay con oer n Be it known that I, EDWARD B. Hnss, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.

The invention herein disclosed relates to card guides of a type similar to that shown in my copending application, Serial No. 36,370, filed June 11, 1925 and is in some respects an improvement on the construction shown in said prior application. Vhile the invention is primarily designed to be used in connection with a compact portable machine, such as the Little Royal, and is especially adapted for use with such machine, nevertheless it is in no way limited in its application to this particular type of machine.

The invention provides a card guide which has an upper graduated edge adapted to register with the printing line, and the guide is provided with a rigid card-holding finger. One of the supporting arms for the card guide is provided with a pivoted finger which is movable from a position in which it extends across the printing line to a position in which one edge thereof forms a continuation of the graduated edge of the card guide. The guide itself is mounted on its support by means which permit both vertical and lateral adjustment thereof.

It is unnecessary for the purpose of this invention to disclose any appreciable portion of the structure of the typewriting ma chine. There is, therefore, only illustrated a portion of the support A which it is understood is carried by the shift frame so that it changes position when the platen B is lifted, but is stationary relative to the longitudinal movement of the platen.

The card guide 1 has the usual cut-out 2 for the passage of the type to the printing point and is provided on'its lower edge with an index 3 adapted to cooperate with the usual scale C which may be laterally adjustable carried by the platen carriage. The guide member 1 has its ends turned out wardly away from the platen at 4 and 5. It is also graduated to form a scale at its upper edge. Two depending ears 6 on the card guide 1 register with portions of the support A and are fastened thereto by means of bolts or screws 7 which pass through openlngs 8 in the support A, which openings are larger both vertically and laterally than the fastening means in order to provide for both vertical and lateral adjustment of the scale member 1. lVashers 9 lie intermediate the nuts on the screw bolts 7 and the support A.

The member 1 is provided adjacent the cut-out 2 with an upwardly projecting rigid finger 10 which extends across the printing line and is curved in conformity with the curvature of the platen. This finger is provided with outwardly rolled edge 11 and a deflecting piece 12.

To the left hand arm of the support A is pivoted a movable finger 13 on a rivet 14 overlying a friction washer 15 adjusted to retain the finger in either of itstwo positions but permitting free movement of the finger. This finger has on its lower portion two shoulders 16 and 17 which cooperate with a pin 18 to limit the movement of the finger in each direction. The edges of this finger are also rolled, as indicated at 19, and it is provided with a finger-piece and deflector 20. When the movable finger is moved to the position shown in Figure 2 the .edge 21 .thereof forms a continuation of the upper scale edge of the card-holding memher 1. When the finger 13 is in its uprightposition it is spaced slightly from the rolled. edge 5 of the card-holding member 1, as indicated at 22, in order to permit the necessary lateral adjustment of the member 1 without interference from the finger.

Figure 4 discloses a modified form in which the movable finger 13 is the same as that shown in the other figures. Instead of the rigid finger 10, however, there is provided a movable finger 23 similar to the finger 13 which has a finger piece and deflector 2a and a rolled edge 25. This finger 23 is pivoted directly to the card-holding member- 1 by a rivet 26 and'spring washer 27. It is provided with two shoulders 28 and 29 which cooperate with a pin 30 to stop the finger in either of its positions. It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the precise embodiment of. the invention without in any way departing from the spirit thereof. Accordingly the 'invention is to be regarded as limited only by the scope of'the appendedclaims.
