SHIFTING TYPE HEAD.
Application med Aprn so, 1923. seriai No. 635,675.
Harrisburg, in the County of Dauphin andV State of Pennsylvania, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shifting Type Heads, of whichthefollowing is aspecification, reference being 'had therein tov the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a shifting type head for typewriters of that class in which a type carrying head mounted on the type bar is automaticallyl shifted to present different type, as for instance upper and lower case type, alternately in the printing position.
The object of the invention is to produce a simple, inexpensive and eiicient construction for movably mounting the head on the bar, for shifting the headto upper and lower case position and for securely retaining the head in the selected position.
kThe preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a skeleton view of a flat platen typewriter equipped with printing mechanism constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the upper end of the type bar, the shiftable typefhead and parts associated therewith, one position of the head being indicated in dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a section of the subject-matter of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detailed perspective view of a group including the type head and the upper end f the type bar or arm.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the type ring of an Elliott-Fisher billing machine supported below a horizontal deck 2Vwhich constitutes the bottom of a carriage 3 movable for letter spacing on a line space frame 4 which advances for line spacing over a stationary flat platen, the printing surface 5 of which is indicated in Fig. 1. v
In the type ring 1 is mounted as usual, a series of up-standing type bars 6 at the upper end of each of which is mounted a pivoted type head carrying upper and lower case types 8 and 9 movable alternatelyvinto printing osition by the shifting of the head 7.
T e type bars 6 are moved down to the platen to print by keys 10 connected to the type bars through intermediate connections 11 as shown, and said bars are retracted by retracting springs 12. The bar 6 is formed Awith a circular upper end 13 substantially conforming in contour to the hub 14 of the head7 which is reduced in thickness so as to' allow the end 13 ofl the bar to lie within the side plane of the type head.
At the side of the hub 14 opposite the head .proper 7, a bifurcated guide and stop 15 is 5 formed rintegral with the hub 'and is substantially the same thickness as'the head 7. The head 7 and the member 15 are formed with angularly related 'stops 16 and 17 disposed to engage the front and rear edges Vof the bar 6 to limit the movement of the head 7 on its axis. This axis in the present instance is in the form of a pivot screw 18 having a head 19 imposed against the hub 14 and the nut 2O screwed on the opposite end of the screw and imposed against the circular end of the type bar.
Pivoted to the head 7 in a plane above and in advance of the aXis thereof, in the normal position of the head, as indicated at 21a is an approximately semi-circular link 21, the lower end of which is located in rear of the type bar at a point'below the head 7 and is attached to one end of a head retaining spring 22 extended along the bar 6 and attached at its lower end thereto as indicated at 23. The link is received within the bifurcated guide and is provided with an upstanding trigger 24 which when intercepted during the printing stroke by a trip 25 will cause the head 7 to be shifted from lower case to upper case position. Similarly. upon the retraction of the type bar the trigger 24 will be intercepted by abuffer ring 26 which will cause the retraction of the head 7 to normal lower case position as the bar comes to rest.
It will now be observed by reference to Figs. 1 and 2 that the line of tension between the fixed point 23 and the pivoted connection 21a between the link 21 and the head 7 will be located in advance of the axis of the head in one position and at the kopposite side of said axis in the other position of the head. This will naturally result in the secure retention of the head in either position by the spring 22 since in one case the stop 16 will be held firmly against the front of the type bar and in the other case the stop 17 will be held firmly against the rear of the bar.
It is thought that from the foregoing the construction contemplated by my invention Will be clearly understood, but I reserve the right to effect such variations thereof as may come fairly Within the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
l. The combination with a type bar, of a type head pivoted thereon, a' link pivoted to the head and provided with a trigger, and a head retaining spring connected to the link.
2. The combination with a. type bar, of a type head pivoted thereon, a link pivoted to the head and provided With a trigger, means for guiding the link, and a head retaining spring Connected to the link.
8. The combination With a type bar, of a type head pivoted thereon and provided With printing typesfand a guide at opposite sides of its axis, a link received by the guide pivoted to the head and having a projeoting trigger and a head retaining spring connected to the link.
4. The combination With a type bar, of a hub mounted at the upper end of the bar, a head and a guide extended from opposite sides of the hub and eoaeting With the bar to limit the movement of the head in opposite directions, a link pivoted to the head and extended through the guide, a head retaining spring oonneeted to the link, and a trigger extended from said link.
5. The combination with a type bar with a type head pivoted thereon, of a head retaining spring extended along the rear side of the bar and a connection between said spring and the head, said Connection being pivoted on and movable With the head to bring the line of tension of said spring alternately at opposite sides of the axis of the head to retain the head in either of two positions` 6. 'Ihe Combination With a type bar, of a type head mounted thereon and having angularly stop faces and a guide, said stop faces eoacting With the bar to limit the movement of the head, a link pivoted to the head and extended through the guide, a
spring connected to the link and a trigger extended from said link, the eonneetion between the link and head being movable to present the line of tension at opposite sides of the axis of the head.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
