SEALING LOCK AND DOOR STARTER.

.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD PossoN,'a citizen ot the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county ol Cook and State of Illinois, have inv-ented certain new and useful Improvements in Sealing Locks and Door Starters, of which'the following` is a specification.
-This invention relates to improvements in apparatus tor operating the sliding doors ot railway cars and other like objects, where it is desirable to use means for effecting a positive movement of the door and securing the locking mechanism thereof in its closed position.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an improved combination sealing lock and door starter. A further object is to provide an improved iorm oi operating mechanism for eliecting a positive movement of the door to or from its closed position. A further object is to provide means lor positively moving` the door in combination with means for securely locking said n'ioving means in a position corresponding to the closed position of the door. Still another object is to provide an improved form or' operating lever for moving the door in combination with an improved bracket and locking bolt for securing the lever against movement. Other objects relate to various Jfeatures ot construction and arrangement which will appear more clearly hereinafter.
The nature ot the invention will be understood from the following specihcation taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which one embodiment is illustrated.
ln the drawings u Figure 1 shows a front elevation of a portion of a car door and the adjacent portion ot the car wall, illustrating the application thereto of the improved door operating mechanism Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing the top plan view of the door operating mechanism;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction ot the arrows;
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line 1-4 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the door is adapted to seat against a door j ambV 11. which is secured to the outei tace ot' the vertical door post 12. The inside sheathing 13 and the outside sheathing 14 of the car wall terminate at and are secured to the door post 12, as shown in Fig. 2. The door jamb 11 is spaced longitudinally from the inner face ot' the door post and a vertical liller block 15 is inserted between the projecting portion oie the door jamb and the adjacent portion of the car wall. A metal guide plate 16 is secured to the outer tace of the door j amb 11 and projects beyond the edge thereot adjacent the door opening, thus forming a vertical guideuf'ay 17 between the plate and the door post to receive the leading edge of the door 10.
The door is operated by means of a lever 2O which is provided with an aperture 21 adapted to be loosely engaged by a pivot pin 22 which projects Jfrom a supporting member 23 carried by the car door. This supporting member seats against a plate 24T, and a similar plate 25 is mounted on the inside ot the door, the two plates and the supporting member 28 being secured to the car door by means of rivets 26. i/Vhen the door is in its closed position, the lever 2OV extends horizontally, as shown in Fig. 1, and projects beyond the door jamb so that the end portion 2Oa thereof forms a handle to be engaged by the operator. A locking* bracket 30 is seated on the outer side ot the plate 16 and secured to the door post by means of a number ot bolts or rivets 31 which extend through the door jamb and through the door post, as shown in Fig. 2. The bracket 30 consists of a plate 32 which seats against the Vertical guide plate 16 and has formed thereon upper and lower guide members 33 and 34, respectively, which are provided with a vertical rectangular aperture therethrough to receive the vertical sliding locking bolt 36. Two of the bolts 81 by which the locking bracket is secured to the door jamb engage the ears 37 formed on the plate 32 and the other bolt 31 passes directly through the central part of the aperture 35 which is Jformed through the upper guide member 33. The locking bolt 3G is provided with a vertical slot 36 adapted to receive the upper bolt 3l, as shown in Figs. l and 3, andthe locking bolt is further provided at its upper end with a transversely extending flange 36b which engages the upper end ot the guide member 33 to limit the downward movement ot the bolt and to provide a handle by which the bolt may be manipulated by the operator.
This space between the upper and lower guide members 33 and 34 is adapted to receive the operatingv lever 2O and the plate 232 ot the bracket is provided with a centrally located rectangular recess 38 which is adapted to receive the inwardly otlset portion 40 of the locking lever 20. This offset portion 40 provides a notch 4l in the outer tace'ot the lever, which notch is adapted to aline with the vertical apertures in the guide members 33 and 34, as illustrated particularly in Figs. 1 and 3. After the lever has been inserted into the recess 38 and the bolt 3G dropped downwardly, thebolt may be securely held in its downward position by means ot the usual car seal which may bc passed through the transverse slot 36C in the lower end of the bolt and through the alining apertures 42 which are formed in the lateral walls ot' the guide member The locking lever 2O is provided with an arm 44 which projects upwardly from the pivot pin 22 and away from the door post, as shown in Fig. l. The upper end ot the arm 44 is provided with a projecting pivot pin 45 which forms a loose pivotal engagement with one end or a rod or arm 46. This arm is provided with a downwardly turned extremity 46n which is adapted to engage an eye 47 formed on the bracket 80.
Assuming that the door is in its closed position, the operator after breaking the seal7 moves the locking` bolt 36 upwardly until the lower end thereof' clears the lockinglever 20. Then after moving the lever outwardly until it clears the bracl-zet, a

The lever can then be swung,` into position between the upper and lower guideways of the bracket to permit the downward movement of the locking bolt 3G.
Although I have shown and described one form ot my invention :tor purposes ot illustration7 it will be seen that it may be constructed in variousother forms without departing from the scope ot the appended claims.
.l claim:
l. ln an operating and locking mechanism for a sliding door member having a frame member associated therewith, the combination with an operating lever pivotally mounted on one ot -said members; ot means swingable in a plane substantially parallel to the plane ot the door, and directly actuated by said lever, for detachably connecting the lever to the other member; and means tor locking` said lever in iiXed position to loclr the sliding` door member.
2. ln an operating mechanism for a door member havinga relatively fixed abutment member associated therewith, the combination with a door operating element mounted on one of said members and movable in a plane substantially parallel with respect thereto; means for locking said element to one ot said members; and a link element tor directly connecting said operating element to the other of said members.
ln an operating and locking` mechanism for relatively movable door members` the combination with an actuating means mounted on one ot said members; of means pivotally connected to said actuating` means for detachably connecting the same to the other member; and independent means tor locking' said actuating means to hold the door in iixed position.
4. In a device or' the character described, the combination with a trame member; ot a door member; an operatingl element pivoted on one ot said members intermediate its ends; means pivoted to an end portion ot said element for connecting` the same to the other member; and operating; means for detachably locking said operatingelement to said last named member.
5. ln combination; a trame member, a door, an operating member pivoted on said door, means for locking;v said operating member to said trame member; and independent means for connecting, said operating' member to said trame member.
6. In combination, a trame member; a door, an operating` member' pivoted on said door7 means for forming a connection between said operating member and said frame member at one side of its pivotal axis; and separate means tor detachably locking said operating member on said frame member at the other side of its pivotal axis.
7 In combination, a frame member, a door, an operating member pivotally mounted on said door, means for detachably forming a rigid connection between said frame member and said operating member at one side of its pivotal axis, and means for detachably forming a locking connection between said frame member and said operating member at the other side of its pivotal axis.
8. In combination, a vertical iframe member, a door movable with respect to said frame member, an operating member pivoted on said door, a rod detachably connecting one end of said lever with said frame member, and locking means for detachably securing the other end of said lever to said frame member independently of the connection of said rod with said frame member.
9. In combination, a frame member, a door, a lever pivoted on said door, said lever having a transversely extending` arm, means ior connecting said arm to said frame member, and independent means for detachably locking the body portion ot said lever to said frame member.
10. In combination, a frame member, a door, a lever loosely pivoted on said door, a bracket mounted on said frame member and having a recess to receive said lever, means for locking said lever in said recess, and independent means for connecting said lever to said frame member at the other side of its pivotal axis.
11. In combination, a door, a frame member, a lever loosely pivoted on said door, a bracket having a recess in its outer side to receive said lever, said lever having a notch, and a locking bolt slidably mounted on said bracket to engage said notch in said lever.
12. In combination, a door, a frame member, a lever loosely pivoted on said door, a bracket having a recess in its outer side to receive said lever, a locking bolt movable vertically on said bracket and adapted to pass on the outer side of said lever for securing said lever to said bracket, said lever having shoulders adapted to engage opposite sides of said bolt, and means for securing said bolt in its locking position.
13. In combination, a vertical frame mem ber, a door movable with respect to said frame member, a horizontally extending lever pivoted on said door and extending beyond said frame member, a bracket secured to said frame member and having a recess therein, said lever having a part adapted to engage said recess, and movable locking means carried by said bracket and adapted to project on the outer side of said lever opposite said recess.
14. ,In combination, a frame member, a door, a lever connected to said door and extending alongside of said -frame member, a guide member carried by said frame member, and a locking bolt mounted in said guide member, said lever having a notch adapted to receive said locking bolt.
15. In combination, a frame member, a door, a lever pivoted on said door and extending alongside of said frame member, a pair of guide members mounted on said i'rame member and adapted to receive said lever between them, a bolt slidable in said guide members and adapted to extend on the outer side of said lever, said bolt being provided with a longitudinal slot, and a pin engaging said slot.
16. In combination, a frame member, a door, a lever pivoted on said door and extending alongside of said frame member, a pair of guide members mounted on said frame member and adapted to receive said lever between them, a bolt slidable in said guide members and adapted to extend on the outer side of said lever, said bolt being provided with a longitudinal slot, and a pin engaging said slot, said bolt and one of said guide members being provided with alining apertures adapted to receive a car seal.
17. In combination, a frame member, a door movable with respect to said frame member, a lever pivoted on said door, said lever having an arm extending transversely from its pivotal axis, a bracket mounted on said frame member, an apertured member carried by said bracket, a rod pivoted to said arm of said lever and having` a hooked extremity member adapted to engage said apertured member, and means carried by said bracket for locking said lever thereto.
18. In combination, aframe member, a door movable with respect to said frame member, a lever pivoted on said door, said lever having an arm extending transversely from its pivotal axis, a bracket mounted on said frame member, an apertured member carried by said bracket, a rod pivoted to said arm of sai-d lever and having a hooked extremity member adapted to engage said apertured member, and a sliding bolt mounted on said bracket and adapted to extend on the outer side of said lever when said door is in closed position.
