Be itknown that I, FRANK JAGER, resid ing in Chicago, in the county of Cool: and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Car-Door- Locking Device, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in door locking devices, and has reference more particularly to the provision of an improved locking and sealing device of a type designed more especially for use in connection with that class of car door which is slidable longitudinally of the car door frame to close the doorway opening; one object being to, improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this type.
One of the principal objects of the invention resides in the provision of a hasp on the door post designed to cooperate with fixed and movable lock elements on the door whereby to receive the seal or other ulti mate securing member in such manner that the hasp is held from movement against the seal, and wherein the hasp is constructed in the form of a lever capable of manipulation to materially assist in the final closing and the initial opening movements of the door.
A still further object of my invention is to produce a device of this type whose component parts are readily fabricated from commercial shaped iron at a consequent re- 7 duction in initial expense and in the cost of maintenance over present devices.
These, together with such other objects and advantages as may be hereinafter set forth, or are incident to my invention, I attain by means of a construction illustrated in a preferred form in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

The numeral 7 designates a combined hasp and lever which is pivoted near one end to the rib and apertured near. the other end-to provide an elongated slot 8. In the present instance the pivoting is accomplished'by means of a headed screw bolt 9 which is partially screwed into and projects a considerabledistance outwardly beyond the body of the post, through an enlarged opening in the lever which permits the lever to swing outwardly from the posts as well asto pivot on'said' bolt.- Y a An angle bar piece 10-having upper and lower abutments 11 and 12 is applied to the front edge of the door, by means of the securing elements 13, whereby the abutments 11 and 12 extend outwardly beyond the plane of the door and at points respectively above and below the pivot bolt 9.
This arrangement of hasp-lever and the abutments as thus situated with respect thereto permits of the manipulation of the former to assist in the initial opening and final closing of the door. For instance, after the slotted end of the hasp-lever has been disengaged from the lock device A 'on the door it is moved to the left of the pivot.
9 so as to engage the upper abutment 11 with its upperand short arm ,7 and with sufficient force to impart an extent of opening movement to the door, in the manner indicated in Figure 2 of the drawing. Railway car doors generally are notoriously difficult to open and close, due in part to warpage and the damage resulting to moving parts thereof under service conditions, but once opened to the extent suggested above such partial opening permits the exercise of leverage by the trainmen against the front edge of the door. Similarly the door is assisted in its final closing movement to closely seat against the door post by manipulating the hasp-lever so as to exert a leverage against the lower abutment 12 as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 1. Such a construction is particularly intended for use in connection with a car door structure such as 'that described and illustrated in my copending application for U. S. Letters Patent, Serial Number 321,619, wherein the door is so provided with anti-frictional means permitting rapid and easy movement of the door for the major portion of its travel and a partial braking or checking of the door, to prevent slamming of the same, at its final closing and opening movements.

Upon the breaking of the latter by the authorized trainman, the bar is moved to the right to release the hasplever which is then in readiness for use to initially actuate the door. Obviously the fixed part of the locking device A comprising the elements 14, 15 and 22 may be readily made from an angle bar section, one of whose flanges may be partly cut-away at intervals to provide the elements 14 and 15. The basal flange 22 may be secured against the door in line with the pivot 9 by the use of any suitable elements 23.
I claim The combination with a door frame, of a sliding door adapted to close the opening provided by said frame, a pair of lugs fixed on said door in vertically spaced relation, and a guiding member loosely fulorumed-on said frame between said lugs in position to engage either of said lugs at will upon swinging movements of the member Whereby the door may be moved said member by reason of the loose fulcrum being capable of passing either lug without engagement therewith.
