MATTRESS.

Application filed July 31, 1923. Serial No. 654,881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERBEN E. LA TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jerome, in the county of Jerome and State of Idaho, have invented a new and useful Mattress, of which the following is a specification.

The device forming the subject matter of this application is a pneumatic mattress, and the invention aims to provide a mattress oi: the kind above mentioned comprising units, any one of which may be removed readily for renewal or repair, without disturbing the other units. Another object of the invention is to provide a pneumatinc mattress which will afford a maximum amount of comfort to the user.

It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.

WVith the above and other objects in. view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, Within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure 1 shows in plan, a mattress constructed in accordance with the invention, parts being broken away; Figure 2 is a transverse section; Figure 3 is a sectional detail showing the couplings; and Figure 4 is a longitudinal section, parts being broken away.

In carrying out the invention, there is provided a plurality of resilient inflatable tubes 1, which extend longitudinally of the mattress, the tubes being spaced apart transversely to a slight extent, as shown at 2. The tubes 1 are closed at their ends, by vulcanizing or otherwise, as indicated at 3. The outermost tube at one side of the mattress is provided in its side and at a point adjacent to one end, with an inflating valve 4:, of any desired construction. Tubular couplings 5 extend through the adjacent walls of adjoining tubes 1 and are externally threaded,

as at 6 to receive nuts 7 and inside nuts 8, the nuts '7 being located between adjacent tubes 1, and the nuts 8 being located inside of the tubes. If desired, compressible washers 9 may be interposed between the nuts and the walls of the tubes so that when the nuts are tightened up, the tubes 1, which preferably are made of rubber, will not be cut of torn. but not necessarily, are alined with the valve at, transversely of the mattress. The body of the mattress constructed as above described, is enclosed within a covering 10 made of any suitable textile material, the covering being brought together between the tubes 1 in the spaces 2 and being stitched together or otherwise secured as indicated at 11.

It is obvious that the entire body of the mattress may be inflated through the valve l, the air moving through the couplings 5 until all of the tubes 1 are inflated and ex panded. Referring to Figure 3 it willba observed that the nature of the connection between adjacent tubes is such that any one tube may be removed for repairs, without disturbing the other tubes. The couplings 5 are mounted in place before the ends of the tubes 1 are closed, as at 3 The mattress may be provided with a deflating valve 25, which, like the valve 4:, may be located at any point preferred on the mattress.

A mattress comprising a plurality of in flatable resilient tubes, means for introducing air into one tube, connections communi' eating with adjoinng tubes; and means whereby each tube is held independently of the other tubes and rendered removable independently of the other tubes, said means comprising separate nuts threaded on each connection, the nuts being located between adjoining tubes and engaging the outer surfaces of adjoining tubes, and other nuts threaded on each connection, the last-specified nuts being respectively located within adjoining tubes and engag ng the inner surfaces of said tubes.
