The present invention relates to improvements in machine-gun supports of the kind being fitted with a frame consisting of a bottom plate and two vertical side walls, in which the machine-gun is supported by two pairs of ins resting in notches in the side walls of tie frame. The distinguishing feature of the invention is that the machinegun is moveably seated in the frame, in such a manner that overcoming the action of one or more springs it slides some short distance towards the rear in the frame, after each firing owing to the action of that portion of the recoil which has not been consumed in moving back the barrel and the look and in tightening the recoil springs. Hereby the advantage is attained that during firing the tripod is not forced out from the position in which it has been placed.

1 is the rearwardly directed leg of the tripod and 2 the forwardly directed ones. On the leg 1 the elevation adjusting device 3 of the gun support is attached, the said device being connected, by means of rods"4, with a supporting frame 5 in the frame in which the machine gun 6 is resting. This frame consists of a bottom 7 and two side walls 8. In each of the latter there is provided, at front as well as at rear, a slot 9 and 10, respectively, in which slots pins 11 and 12 respectively provided on the gun 6 are resting. The said slots are of suitable length and are open upwardly at front, in such a manner that the pins 11 and 12 may easily be passed down into or up from the slots.
In the rear portion of the frame there is provided, between the side walls 8 and in rigid connection with the latter and with the bottom 7, a cross-piece 13 fitted with two holes affording passage for two bolts 15 with heads 1 1. These bolts are screwed into threaded holes in a sliding piece 16, and between the cross-piece 13 and each of the heads of the bolts there is provided about each bolt a helical spring 18. The sliding piece may be moved back and forth in the rear portion of the frame 7, 8 in which it is guided by rails 17, and it is fitted with a longitudinal bore 19, Fig. 2, for a bolt 20 passing also through a hood 21, which is screwed into a threaded hole in the crosspiece 13. In front of the front end wall of this hood there is provided a handle 22. Inside of the hood there is provided, about the bolt 20, a helical spring 23, which is held in compression between the front end wall of the hood and an arm 24 keyed onto the bolt 20. The said arm forms, at its upwardly directed end, a hook 25,Fig. 2, which partly engages from above a recess 26 in the upper.
front portion of the sliding piece 16, in which recess a bolt 27 provided on the gun is resting, when the gun is placed in the frame 7, 8. The hook 25 prevents then the bolt from being pulled up from the recess.
When a shot is fired, the gun recoils, so that its pins 11 and 12 will slide back in the slots 9, and 10, respectively. The bolt 27 connecting the gun to the sliding piece 16 moves then the latter slightly to the rear in the frame 7, 8, whereby the springs 18 become tightened which enables them, when the return motion is completed, to bring the sliding piece and the arm forward again into the normal position in which the front edge of the sliding piece rests against the cross-piece 13. When it is desired to remove the gun from the frame 7, 8 the handle 22 is moved slightly forward, whereby the hook 25 is removed from the bolt 27.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. Improvements in supports for machine guns of the kind by which the latter is resting with two pairs of pins in notches in the side walls of a frame, characterized in that a bolt 27 on the gun is connected with a sliding piece 16 adapted to move back and forth in the frame 7, 8 and being actuated by one or more springs 18, which are compressed by the recoil of the gun and the thereby produced motion of the sliding piece in the frame, and which after the recoil has ceased moves the sliding piece and the gun forward again into the normal position.
2. Arrangement according to claim 1, characterized by the attachment to the slid 10 bolt 20 supporting an arm '24 fitted With a. hook 25, the said hook while actuated by a spring 23 serving as look-for the bolt 27 of the gun, when the said bolt rests in the sliding piece 16, but being adapted to be released by means of a handle 22provided 15 on vthe bolt 20.
