onALK-LINE HOLDER.
Application filed February 27,1925. Serial No. 12,148.
"i'ul Improvements in ChallcLine Holders,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a chalk line reel, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby the line is chalked automatically as it isdrawn from the reel so that it is not necessary to run the line over a piece of chalk.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for placing tension on the line as it is being pulled from the reelandsuch means also acting to remove some of the chalk from-the line to prevent the chalk from being wasted.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter iully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had tothe accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view with parts in section showing one form of the invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through this form of'the invention.
Figure 3 is a partial perspective view showing the flap in open position.
Figure 4: is a perspective view of the holder for the packing medium.
Figure 5 is a side View with parts in section of another form of the invention.
Figure 6 is an edge view of the form shown in Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a. perspective View showing the reel part separated.
Figure 8 is a. perspective View of the holder for the packing medium used in the second form of the invention.
In these views. 1 indicates the case for holding the reel 2 upon which the chalk line 3 is wound. This reel has its hub 4 provided with a .pintle 5 which engages the bearing bushing 6 carried by one face of the casing and the other face of the hub has a square socket 7 therein to receive the squared part 8 of a socket member 9 which has'a rounded portion to engage a bushing 10 earned by the other face of the casing and which is fastened to a crank handle 11 which is formed of two sections hinged together so that the finger part 12 can be pressed into the socket member 9 when the device is not in use, as shown in Figure 2. The rounded part is passed through the bushing 10 and then the member-11 is placed over theprojecting part of the rounded portion and the edge of the rounded portion upset to hold the parts in the bushing in the casing and then a washer 13 is placed on the square part 8 and'the edges of the square part upset by a tool, such as shown at a in Figure 7, so as to hold the washer in place. Thus the washer and the part 1.1 will rotatably hold the socket memher 9 in the side of the casing. The central part of this side of the casing is formed as a cap 14 so that it can be removed from the casing in order to provide access to the parts and to permit chalk to be placed in the casing. In pressing the cap back in place the square part 8 is inserted in the square socket 7 so that when the member 9 is rotated by the handle 11 the reel will also be rotated within the'casing.
A box-like holder 15 is provided with an outlet 16 in its bottom through which the line passes and said holder is fastened to the edge of the casing by its tongues 17 being passed through slots 18 in the edge and bent over. An opening 19 is formed in said edge so as to provide access to the holder and a packing medium 20, such as spongy rubber or the like, is placed in the holder so that the line must be. pulled through said medium when it is being pulled from the casing. This medium acts to place tension on the line to prevent it from running too freely from the casing and it also acts to prevent the chalk within the casing from dropping through the outlet 16. A flap 21 is hinged to the edge of the casing and is adapted to close the opening 19. This flap is provided with an outlet 22 through which the line passes and it is held closed by its edges engaging the latch portions 23 formed in the casing.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when the chalk line is to be usedit is simply necessary to seize the end of the. line and pull it and as chalk is placed in the casing and comes in contact with the line, the line will, be coated with the chalk so that it is ready for use as it leaves the casing. The material 20 through which the line passes acts as a check on the line and also prevents the loose chalk from passing through the outlet holes. It also prevents too much of the chalk being carried out of the device on the line. After the line has been used the handle is opened and the reel rotated to rewind the line on the reel. Access can be had to the parts by removing the cap 14 and powdered chalk can be placed in the device by removing this cap. Access to the packing chamber can be had by raising the flap 21.
In the modification the holder 15 is of trough shape and slightly curved, as shown in Figure 8, with the outlet 16 in one end thereof so that the line will pass through this end and lengthwise of the holder and pass through an opening in araised part 24 on the flap 2,1. In this case I provide a roller 25 in the casing for guiding the line to the outlet 16. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that before described.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
hat I claim is 1. A chalk line holder comprising acasing for containing loose chalk, a reel rotatably mounted in the casing, said casing having an opening in its edge, a holder within the casing and connected with a portion of the inner wall thereof and with the interior of which the opening communicates, a flap hinged to the exterior of the casing for covering the opening, said flap and the holder having holes therein through which a chalk line carried by the reel passes and packing material placed in the holder for serving to place the line under tension and to prevent the chalk from escaping through the openmg.
A chalk line holder comprising a casing having an opening in its edge, a reel rotatably mounted in the casing, a cap on one face of the casing, a member rotatably carried by the cap and adapted to engage a part of the reel to cause the same to rotate when the member is rotated, a handle on the member for rotating the same, a hinged flap on the casing for closing the opening therein, a holder within the casing and connected with a portion of the inner wall of the same and in communication with the opening in the edge thereof and a packing in said holder for placing the line under tension and a hole. in the holder and in the flap through Which the line passes.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
