SMOKING DEVICE.
Application led February 18, 1927.','Seria1 110.169,289.
Iminimum space, with the result it can be easily carried by the V*user thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a smoking device which includes telescopically mounted parts so 'associated'` that they can be easily and expeditiously arranged to their respective positions" with very little effort on the part of the user.
A further obj ect of the invention is to provide a smoking device including telescopically mounted parts that` also includes means to lprevent the arrangement of said parts to operative position except when desired and said means retain the device in a clean and sanitary condition. l
A still further object of the invention is to provide a` smokers device lthat prevents liquid from interferingy with the free pas- Sage of smoke to the user, with the result the i user in a clean and dry condition. p'
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and inthe combination and arrangement 'of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out vein the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, referenee will be had to the Vaccompanying drawings lwherein like characters denote likeV or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
F igure 1 is a. sectional view taken longitudinally through the device withthe partsv thereofv in extended position.
Figure 2 is a front view thereof. v
Figure 3`is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1. I
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on lin 4-4ot'Figure1. l
Figure 5 is a side elevationwith parts broken away and illustrating the application of the cap'member to the device when the parts thereof are disposed to inoperative position. f
Figure 6 is a view ofa slightly modified form of bowl. Y
Referring to the drawings in detail and particularly to Figures 1 to 5 inclusive the reference numeral 1 indicates abowl vwhich fis adapted for receiving tobacco in granu-V lated lor other forms as will be readily Vapparent, as well as cigars and the like." :This
bowlk 1 is formed from wood or other suit-V able material and has fixed to its front end,
a metallic band 2 which is provided Vwith an inwardly bent inner edge 3 embedded within aY recess vformed in the bowl as shown as to prevent displacement of the band. The' band is further provided with an annular flange 4 which is disposed within the bowl and hin'gedly secured through the medium of a pivot pin 5 is an apertured closure 6 having formed oppositefits pivot point a; resilient latch arm 7 adapted to be accommodated in a keeper 8 formed on the band, as best shown in Figurel. The opposite end lof the bowl 1 has countersunk therein a metallic reinforcing member 9. i
Mounted for slidable movement` within the bowl 1 is a stem 10 which yis provided with a slightly `outwardly tapered en'd 11 adaptedfto ybe frictionally received in the reinforcing member 9 when the device is disposed to its operative or extended posi# tion as shown in Figure 1. The sternV 10 is hollow and the tapered portion 11 i is provided'with a recess 12 whichis threaded for a portion of'its length to receive a threaded sleeve 13 having a closed inner end llkformedwith an aperture, andfprovided an aperture registering with the aperture of the closedend 14. The outer end of the'- stem 10 is reduced as'at 17 and terminates in a straight portion which is reinforcedfby a substantially right angle shaped bandk 18.
Telescopically mounted within the stem 10 is a mouth piece 19 having the usual gripping end 20 and smoke passage' 21. The opposite end oftheinouth piece 19 is of a size to frictionally engage the stem 10 at its outer end as shown in Figure 1,- but of course the mouth piece is otherwise slidably mounted within the stem as set forth. `This `last mentioned end of the mouthpiece 19 is provided with grooves 22 arranged in opposite relation with respect to Veach otherl I have also provided a cap member which l ioY not only acts Vto retain the parts in closed position as shown in Figure 5, but also keeps the mouth piece as well as its associated parts in a clean and sanitary condition, and this cap member includes a tubular shell 23 adapted to be passed between the stem l() and the bowl when the parts are disposed to closed position shown in Figure, and an annular' ring 2li is formed with said shell to limit the inward movementthereof. "This ring 24 is arranged intermediate the ends of the shell and also provides a stop for a thimble 25 which entirely surrounds the parts as shown. Y
In Figure 6 I have illustrated a slightly modified form of bowl and in, this foi-in it will be noted that the tobacco can be introduced at right angles to the bowl proper and in order" to accomplish this I have provided theA bowl with'an upstanding portion 26 which ofcourse is also adapted to accommodate tobacco. l The front end of the `bowlis threaded to accommodate a threadedV plug 27 which can be removed as will be. apparent i when itis desired to clean the bowl as shown in this form.
From the above description and disclosure of the drawings it will be obvious that I have provided a tobacco smoking device that not only will accommodate tobacco in its Y various forms but is capable of being folded to compact form as shown in Figure 5 so that it may be easily and conveniently earried by the user, and when extended `as shown in Figure l theparts are frictionally held in fixed engagement with each other,
in a manner `whereby casual'collapsing of the parts is eliminated. The novel construction also prevents liquids Vfrom obstructing 'the smolie passages, asthe liquid will haveL a tendency to vflow through the grooves 22 and be deposited within the stem 10 which is provided with a relatively large passage as shown, andby providing the stein l() with the sleeve 13 and cup 16 as shown, the liquid will be prevented from contacting with tobacco or cigars in the bowl aswell as cigarettes which maybe carried bythe stemy or otherwise.v t
s It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I ldesire it to be understood fthatI may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes `fall Withinthe seopeof the appended claims.
that I claim is:
i l. A smoking vdevice of the character de scribed comprising a bowl having open ends,
